Got a really good ask a solid bit ago about how I’d do a Steph comic and while I’m still thinking it over bc it’s such a big question w so many factors, I do think I’d ideally want to do an arc which could definitely ‘solve’ Bruce and Steph’s relationship, which could tie up the baggage and remove some of the ambiguity from years of retcons as well as the reboot. Like a final statement which could be narratively satisfying and cathartic, that would (ideally) stymie future retcons, and allow for future growth and interactions between them both. It wouldn’t be Bruce-bashing, but it also would take what he did to and said to Steph over the two times they worked together preboot as serious factors which had serious impacts on Steph. Sort of weaving together their everything in a retrospective.
However it’s brought up the very unfortunate question of: how does one get Stephanie ‘chronic avoider/moving on-er/if-i-pretend-it-never-happened-it-didnt’ Brown and Bruce ‘if I talk about my feelings I’LL DIE!!!!/if I don’t full send every choice like it was the absolute unquestionably right one I’LL KMS!!’ Wayne to talk about their history even a little.
So I’ve compiled a short list of things I think could accomplish this, open to any edits and additions or suggestions from anyone with any please and thank you!!
1. Fatal disease strikes Stephanie Brown (Clench part 3?)
Who Initiates Convo: Steph.
Why: Laying in a hospital bed certain she is never going to get up from it again would bring back memories, and with nothing else to lose now that she knows she’s a goner she has much less stopping her from pursuing answers and closure for a lot of stuff. Maybe Steph gets to thinking about legacy and against her better judgement checks her file on the Batcomputer, leading her to want to get the story straight when she sees gaps.
Pros: Could go into her introspectiveness very easily, if Steph decides she’s doing a ‘closure quest’ I could also clean up some emotional stuff w other characters (Crystal, Tim, Cass etc), I could hide from reader she’s dying until halfway through the arc which I find fun
Cons: it’s pretty cheap and not very inventive, might be too general as Steph would want to be doing other stuff besides getting closure with Bruce if she thought she was actually dying and I wouldn’t want the arc to drag or get bogged down from my purpose with it, and it’s cruel to do to Crystal Brown
2. Bruce pulls some shit with another young vigilante
Who Initiates: Steph.
Why: Long held believe of mine that Steph would be hyper aware and worried about Bruce repeating his mistakes w mentoring her with someone else. If she thought this was happening she would NOT leave it alone and she would NOT be quiet about it.
Pros: plays into Steph’s preexisting characteristics like her protectiveness over kids she sees herself in and her willingness to stand up for others, could be a situation where other characters get involved but also very easy to segment off to be more a Bruce v Steph thing as needed, opportunity for Steph blow up fights she can’t fully explain and creeping feelings down her spine and other characters not seeing as much of an issue bc they weren’t there in the same way she was
Cons: more complex to pull off, relies on the introduction of new young Gotham vigilante who Bruce is willing to work with to some extent, which is hard to pull off, involves regressing Bruce’s character which is just NOT what I want from this arc. I do think this arc should rely on the fact that they both know better now, that it’s buried in the past somewhat, not being recreating, bc it’s simply no longer recreatable. Could be circumvented if the situation is not what it looks like, that Bruce isn’t using this vigilante like he used Steph, but it reminds Steph enough that she makes A Thing about it anyway.
3. Magical Intervention
Who Initiates: Either / Both
Why: For this one, imagine some kind of supernatural terror of unknown origin is causing destruction in Gotham, it starts small but quickly is growing in power, I imagine it being triggered by something small happening between Bruce and Steph. Like something rly small where the point it how Absolutely Unable and Unwilling they both are to talk about their history. Someone brings up Black Mask in front of them, or it’s the anniversary of the gang war and they have a nothingburger conversation that leaves them both dredging up old feelings, or there is a lighthearted conversation in front of Bruce about the Robin mantle (lol isn’t it so funny when we all were Robin and Bruce <insert common experience that can only occur if you knew Bruce Wayne = Batman> that Steph fundamentally cannot relate to. It’s just a moment that leaves them both feeling weird. The supernatural presence is tied to those unsolved feelings, Stephanie’s buried anger and despair and Bruce’s repressed guilt and fear. They don’t know this, and through having to work so close together to fight this presence (other allies dubiously out of the picture) they keep dredging up old problems and arguments and memories, which they still REFUSEEE to confront leading to worse and worse destruction until they figure their shit out.
Pros: Most direct with the least room for distracted-ness, super direct way to force the characters to talk as solving the magical force creating the disturbance can only occur through their buried inner conflicts being resolved, it also is the only option so far which also allows deep exploration of both of their tendencies to repress and which explains why this hasn’t been a conversation before, and it has potential for a really intriguing parallel to War Games w an overarching event occurring which is secretly and accidentally being caused by Bruce and Steph
Cons: deux ex machina to the HIGHEST degree, I personally don’t like the idea of magic as it’s more of a rarity in Gotham based Bat stories and especially as a core part of a multi-issue arc and I want the story to feel grounded
4. War Games is relevant for in universe reasons
Who Initiates: Bruce, tentatively but not emotionally
Why: Remember those Bat-Myth or Bat-man guys? Not them literally but something along those lines. Someone, maybe multiple someone’s, are poking around at what should’ve remained buried: the history behind one of Gothams most notorious gang wars and what Batman and the 16 year old who turns out to be alive and well who was outed as Robin have to do with it. Maybe they start harassing Steph at her college, or maybe they try to source their answers from the shadows, but either way there is someone stirring up shit that Oracle had erased from the internet and their intentions are somewhat nefarious. Maybe they lost someone in the war and are looking for who is responsible. Maybe they’ll do anything to figure it out. Batman and Steph have to work together to figure out what they know and how they know it as the investigators antics get more intense and targeted, and dredge up old memories doing so.
Pros: Finally get to resolve the whole War Crimes ‘Steph’s whole ass secret identity was outed on live TV’ thing, thematically very relevant option since War Games is the event which ends the era of ‘Urban Legend Batman’ and given the themes of identity and secrets entrenched in Steph and Bruce’s history. It could also solidify what was going on with Leslie Thompskin, and Crystal Brown and deal with Bruce inexplicably saying he knew the whole time Steph was alive. Basically directly cleans up the parts of Steph’s narrative DC has been the most reticent with. Potential to fix some of the worst of War Games and address it straight on for the first time ever from Steph’s POV.
Cons: I don’t think War Games or War Crimes should be treated as hard and fast canon and I don’t like the idea of entrenching a story meant to clarify canon for Steph in either one of them. They are outstandingly cruel and misogynistic stories which people STILL to this day think Steph needed to be ‘held accountable for’. I don’t want any of that sentiment, and recanonizing War Games and discussing War Games is going to look terrible for Steph given it was designed to kill her off in a way as her fault as possible so that no one would feel too bad. The comic was character assasination in all meanings of the phrase and it’s not what I want to center. Also, Harder for me to understand Steph’s feelings in a story like this, given how little there is to work with and her ooc moments in War Games. Could foundationalize War Games into Steph’s character, which is sooo not what I want.
5. Incomplete Records/Third Party Intervention
Who Initiates: Third Party / Bruce
Why: Someone (tbd who) goes through old files on the Bat-computer and discovers some of the more rarely discussed aspects of Steph’s history. Who knew she was fired twice? And what’s this about her not having upstairs access? They set out to find the truth and get the full story, something that causes issues for literally everyone.
Pros: a less war games entangled version of option number 4 which is nice, plays off of ideas of history and secrets
Cons: I don’t like the idea of relying on a third party, and I can’t think of any character who would fit the bill and the story well enough to justify them being such a major player in what is meant to be a Bruce and Steph story. Reads more like a single issue Gotham Knights 2000-esque story which is unfortunately not enough room for the sheer amount of history to clarify and the complexity I’d want to go into.
So yeah, all decent enough options for a hypothetical Bruce and Steph resolution arc set-up! Again if anyone has any thoughts or preferences or criticisms or more ideas at all I’d love to hear.

I fear Taskmaster stans are still some of the more entitled MCU watchers. They’re like “oh no my c-list Avengers villain was replaced by an OC with sorta similar powers and costume, woe is me.”
Hey, fellas? Some of us (me) are actually suffering here.
I gotta deal with kneecapping swathes of Marvel cosmic stories from adaptation, I gotta deal with Stucky shippers invading comic spaces to say why Steve should date his surrogate son, and I gotta deal with people who think whitewashing Wanda is super cool.
You got the lowest stakes of problems with the MCU, so kindly shut the fuck up.

Dick Grayson and Donna Troy: Platonic Soulmates
"Were you ever in love with him?" "Romantically? No. But I love him as one of my dearest friends." -New Teen Titans (1980) #28
"Donna's face quavered as I remembered when we first teamed up. I could have fallen easily in love with her then. Now, years later, I knew I did love her, more than I ever could if I were only her lover." -New Teen Titans (1980) #38
"Donna, we've gone through so much together, and in not all that many years. Yet I feel as if I've known and loved you all my life." -Tales of the Teen Titans (1984) #50
"Donna and I were thirteen when we became best friends. I remember after her first date she called me to gossip about it. Later she helped me get past my breakups with Carol and Joanie. And I sat up all night with her after David and Lee. Now she's having a baby." -New Titans (1988) #89
"So, do you remember? The first person who made your cheeks burn? It was Donna, wasn't it?" "Donna? Why does everyone think we were an item?" "Maybe because of the way you smile every time you say her name." "I love her. I've probably always loved her. But she's almost like a sister to me. Someone I somehow always knew rather than someone I discovered. She never made my breath catch so much as...well...she almost made it easier to breathe." -Nightwing Secret Files (1999)
"Dick...I love you for this." "Well, the feeling's mutual." -Wonder Woman (1987) #165
[Dick silently looks on as Bruce and Diana have a conversation about Donna's death] "I should have been there to protect her. I should've sensed that she needed me. She was my sister. She was a part of my soul..." [Dick starts crying] -Titans/Outsiders: Secret Files and Origins (2003)
"It's Nightwing whose soul shines the brightest. Raised in the shadow of the Bat, he overcame the death of his parents and the darkness of his mentor. Brave, unselfish, utterly kind--who wouldn't fall in love with that strength and that smile?" -The Return of Donna Troy (2005) #2
"Bottom line? No, the bottom line, Dick...is that you led us then and you lead us now. And I'd follow you into hell if I had to." -JLA (2006) #50
"It's going to be weird, though. Not having your best friends around you." "You'll have me, ya goof." -Titans (2016) Special #1
"He's so honorable, Dad. He's such a good man. A lot of our friends say we're like brother and sister. I think that's right. He knows more about me than almost anyone. I love him—but I've never been in love with him. He's my best friend. But he's something more, too. He's family." -Titans (2023) 2025 Annual

I was gonna start this post saying people don’t talk abt Steph’s issues with her mother enough but actually people don’t even talk abt her issues with her father enough. I know that Arthur is evil to a cartoonish degree so it’s hard to fully comprehend that, but even just looking at it from a more realistic angle, that girl grew up fully understanding that her dad didn’t like her. She wasn’t good enough for her own father to do the bare minimum of caring about her. Crystal improved in time, but she didn’t do much to help with that during Steph’s most important developmental years. Steph grew up with the understanding that she’s not good enough and no one will help her when she struggles so don’t bother asking and don’t bother crying about it either. She saved herself both emotionally and physically by becoming Spoiler and continued to get up every time she fell because she had no other choice. She has the fundamental belief that there is no one in her corner no matter how much her relationship with crystal improves or how many allies she makes, that belief will always be there. That’s why she happily accepted the bare minimum from Tim and was constantly prepared/expecting for him to cheat on her. That’s why she doesnt seek out a father figure in Bruce, because she doesn’t know what it’s like to have that in her life so why would she expect it from him? That’s why she comes across as a sunshine character, because who would care otherwise? Honestly now that I’ve typed it out I think her independence gets undermined the most.
