Exactly this, I moved to another country and have a lot of elderly neighbors. It's not just an icebreaker to handout extra treats here, but often a new cultural experience & many of them are on a fixed income so they appreciate little treats a lot.
It's also meant that I can make lunch for myself that my husband doesn't enjoy and invite one of them over for a meal & company so I don't have too many leftovers (soups & stuff you can't really cook for 1).

We have done this since the start of the country and not enough people give a damn. Native American, Japanese American, now anyone not white enough. America is not happy unless it's oppressing someone else. That's a huge reason why I moved. People don't actually want change. They just want to go back to hiding it enough that no one talks about it.
The thing that separates "alligator alcatraz" from other detainment centers is the pride being taken in it, the openness about what's going to happen there, the merch. The actual interior of the building and the conditions under which detainees will suffer are not different than other ICE detention facilities
The escalation represented by alligator Alcatraz isn't an escalation in the abuse, its an escalation in the scale at which the abuse is inflicted and in the sense of safety fascists feel when openly celebrating the abuse being inflicted

Realistically what we'd like to see is a functional emergency system again, i.e. emergency warnings, assistants, and medications. Functional Tax collections. A working DoE - although actually working not the BS that's been ongoing for decades. Other government agency back up and running again.
Most importantly SCOTUS impeachments and removal of every person who failed to uphold the constitution & do their damn jobs. Checks and balances can't work if all the branches don't work. I have no expectation that Congress will fix itself in my lifetime....but SCOTUS is possible.
Hey. Look at me. Please leave yourself a note somewhere you'll see it later that says "it is going to take years if not decades to get the United States government to the level of functionality it had in November of 2024." If we elect a democrat in 2028, we are not going to be up and running by 2032.
Please make sure you have a reminder in your phone reminding you to not look at 2028/32/36 Democratic candidates and say "why are they not promising/delivering Cool Shit?" because you are going to understand that to get Cool Shit we must have competent people running a decently funded government, and we are not going to have that.
We are not getting UBI. We are not getting single payer healthcare. We are not getting free college or free preschool. We are not redistributing wealth on a large scale. We are not getting free internet. We are not getting ranked choice voting.
If we are lucky, we are going to get an IRS that can collect taxes, qualified schoolteachers, research grants, Social Security, and a government that thinks maybe it should be a priority for people around the worlds to not have AIDS, malaria or TB.

There's no acting I've ever enjoyed more than Riesgraf playing a well written Parker scene.
Oh my fucking god, just renew Leverage Redemption so that Beth Riesgraf can have more scenes like this. She's phenomenal

my favorite moment of the cool down the mark job was a small one, one i don't think anyone has gif'ed yet because it's unremarkable visually but it's heavy with character and relationship dynamic depth. it's when hurley wants to propose the new direction for the con. parker has set this all up. she wants this to happen. but! she still lets the others debate. lets sophie have her lead as mastermind. doesnt advocate to sway the decision. hears out sophies choice. parker overrules it, and there's something so sure and confident about her tone that it felt like i could feel settle the weight of her conviction as point person for all of the leverage crews.
this is so so so so different from how nate ran things. really ties into what i wrote in with a love so deep and warm and true:
She doesn't wanna be a dictator. It's not the kind of issue with too much responsibility, or that she doesn't plan out contingencies. It's not too hard for her, and she's sure if she wanted to, she could call the plays top to bottom and that'll be it. [...]
Mastermind may be a role people in their bad guy world understand, and she's had front row seat for five years worth of work by one of the best in the game. But Parker—right from the start, when she told Nate he noticed the haircuts which she would've missed—knew. She knew she could learn and she didn't have all the skills and knowledge and that would make the difference for how they moved forward, even if she didn't fully realize it then.
Parker won't do it alone. [...] Parker won't be Nate. Can't be. Her mind works different.
Nate had his plans and his ruthlessness. Parker has her drills and harnesses and explosives and the limits of her body and memorized tables of physics formulas: her work has always only been possible with an understanding of the tools laid out in front of her.
So Parker says mastermind but means point person, like the hook of a tension holding a pick as it works its magic.

The entire thing is disgusting. All people add value & they don't need to justify their existence to the government.
One of my nephew's has down syndrome and autism. He's non-verbal. He was adopted from an orphanage that abused him at 7 years old. He's a grown man now. His life has value. He has friends. He has an aide. He loves certain things. He communicates in his own fashion & it's too bad that most people can't be bothered to learn about people who are different from them in this or other ways.
I fucking hate that the general response to RFK Jr's eugenist take on autistic people is "autistic people do pay taxes, autistic people do work, autistic people do date!"
Some autistic people don't and that shouldn't make them less worthy of life. Some autistic people do need constant help and support and that shouldn't make them less worthy of life.
Once again we're falling in the right wing trap of :
They make a hateful, fascist statement
Instead of focusing on the fact that it is hateful and fascist we try to show them that they are factually wrong
We throw our own allies and the most vulnerable of us under the bus in the process
We legitimise an only slightly less hateful, fascist view as we go
They have completed their goal of making us accept the still hateful, fascist second version, hurrah. What a victory.
Right now what we're getting to with that is that autistic people who can work and pay taxes are okay, and the others aren't. Fuck this shit.
Same thing happens with the people who are being deported ("they have a visa!", "they didn't even have a criminal record!" -> even if they didn't have a visa, even if they did have a criminal record, deporting them and detaining them in what's essentially a concentration camp wouldn't be okay, you absolute tools of fascism.)

“In the face of current threats to our liberties, this project is a reminder of the principles and guts of generations of Bostonians, and it is expressed on the same sites where our history has played out over the centuries.”
Under the pseudonym "Silence Dogood," a group of artists projected a series of anti-tyranny messages onto the Old State House in Boston Tuesday.

[[this is a fic idea i'm currently fleshing out. i haven't written anything substantial in a loooong time but i'm trying to gain some momentum/motivation to write this🤞]]
A canon/fix-it [kinda?] story - Clarke and Lexa share a painful, unresolved history. Time has passed since they last saw each other, but echoes of their bond still haunt them both. Their story is one of deep longing, unspoken words, and the agonizing weight of silence.

I work in the government. At the VA as a social worker. I want to document what I have seen so I’m not gaslit into thinking it isn’t as crazy as it clearly is right now.
I am editing some things down. I will be sharing non-political facts and personal concerns as they relate to me on a personal level through my job. My opinions and beliefs do not represent the VA, the government, or any political party. These posts are to encourage transparency for all.
This may be a long one.
It started with an email. And then continued with many more.
First email:
1/22/2025
MESSAGE FROM THE ACTING SECRETARY
We are taking steps to close all agency diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) offices and end all DEIA-related contracts in accordance with President Trump’s executive orders titled Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing and Initial Rescissions of Harmful Executive Orders and Actions.
These programs divided Americans by race, wasted taxpayer dollars, and resulted in shameful discrimination.
We are aware of efforts by some in government to disguise these programs by using coded or imprecise language. If you are aware of a change in any contract description or personnel position description since November 5, 2024, to obscure the connection between the contract and DEIA or similar ideologies, please report all facts and circumstances to [email protected] within 10 days.
There will be no adverse consequences for timely reporting this information. However, failure to report this information within 10 days may result in adverse consequences.
In addition to the above, all personnel are directed to withdraw any final or pending documents, directives, orders, materials, and equity plans issued by the agency in response to now-repealed Executive Order 14035, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) in the Federal Workforce (June 25, 2021). These actions must be taken immediately, but no later than January 31, 2025.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
Todd B. Hunter
Acting Secretary
This is an OFFICIAL email to federal employees. The language was shocking to our whole team. We are social workers. We work in kindness and helpfulness and we have been told there would be consequences if we do not report our coworkers.
There were messages between coworkers in fear of what this meant. If this would mean we couldn’t do our jobs.
Our morning meeting was cryptic and fearful. As federal employees, there are rules in place that extend beyond “appropriate language” that the community has. We are not allowed to discuss politics, express opinions on any party or figure or ruling, or protest of any kind. It’s called the Hatch Act 1939.
So we all sat there. All 30 of us. Unsure what could be said. We could see the smiles on one or two of those on the team that had spewed hate in the past, but at large we were all in shock.
I moved to the VA from hospice. I saw veterans dying and wanted to be part of the system to help them pass peacefully. Even though I am not pro-military, I am pro-senior care. And the VA is one of the few free systems that can actually help. I feel like I can actually help.
But god is it hard to work here right now. There is no shame in being conservative or liberal in beliefs. It’s a valid point. But the system I personally work in is suffering with this administration change right now.
This VA system is a socialist system that veterans can come to make up for the gaps in services that those in the community can’t escape. I have veterans coming to me concerned for their services. I can only offer hope to them. I’m frustrated daily now with the emails coming through.
I moved to the VA because, as a social worker, the community was so limited on options that I would feel depressed daily on what I couldn’t help with. Now I feel like I losing my mind even more. I think of quitting daily, but I want to stay and help if I can.
Our government has so much power and capacity for good. I want to be a part of that.
I’ll post more emails as well.
Be safe everyone
