all these posts about the gluten guys and lost generation teamup that include some variation of "oh and Impulse is also there" are making me think back to wild life. where it was also "three Gs and Impulse is also there". which makes me think back to last life and southlands and how that also had a "Impulse is also there" vibe.
then for a second i got mad at the fandom for being so dismissive before i remembered that perhaps we're not completely baseless here. because i thought about southlands and how when martyn does his last "making fun of mumbos intro" bit, he only made statues for jimmy and mumbo, despite impulse also having died. and i thought about wild life and how the only person who seemed to care about Impulse was Pearl, and even she was mostly focused on other matters. and i look at past life now and see how Ren says "Impulse is getting stuff for us" and Cleo going "he's our husband" before correcting themselves with "they're our husbands".
and i think about Double Life, about "I want Etho." And I think about 3rd Life, the only time this feeling of otherness was warranted. And i think about Limited Life. Impulse's best performance. The one team where he wasn't just "there".
i wonder if the phrase Impulse keeps repeating in Past Life, "I need teammates!", isn't just something he says out of strategic interest. i wonder if there's something in his heart that cries out to be valued, to feel like he's part of something, to have someone tell him they're proud of him. he always works so, so hard in making sure his team has all the resources they need. he puts himself in danger to prove that he's worth having around. he's willing to sacrifice his own lives to get kills. he reacts so badly to failure because every failure is another reason for people to ditch him. he thinks that, if he just works hard enough, he'll finally have the one thing he wants even more than winning.
and yet both fanon and canon treats him the same. He's a white sheep among black sheep. He's the tagalong. He is also there.

oh ho! more hero designs?!
[bad boys, cleo + co]
Tumblr media
u know the drill.. come get your lore
gem:
- the most recent hero to join the team! she’s something of a prodigy for her age, given how late her powers developed, and while they aren’t the most combat-oriented, she more than makes up for it with her physical capabilities (a large percentage of which were honed during her days as a vigilante)
- as aforementioned, gem’s powers manifested later than most (typically it’s early teens alongside puberty, hers developed around the age of 22). after a stint of ill health worsened by gem trying to simply exercise her way out of it, she collapsed while out for a run and her consciousness slipped from her body. in the panic, she couldn’t find her way back until a stranger (who she would later learn was joel) unintentionally brought her back. the two would quite quickly become friends, with joel offering advice on how to manage her powers, and gem pushing him into becoming a better fighter physically; and over the course of a few years, they came a vigilante duo
- however, gem always had high aims. she pursued a place amongst the heroes corp and eventually made it in. despite her encouraging joel to also join, she never succeeded and the two amicably parted ways. despite this, they would occasionally collaborate behind the scenes to benefit their respective goals. when joel finally flipped to becoming a villain, these collaborations declined, however they never aim to truly hurt one another in battle - a bit of secret friendly sparring never goes amiss though
- in the present, gem has a solid place amongst the heroes’ coalition, impulse took her on as an apprentice of sorts, and she has more than exceeded his expectations. the two still collaborate often, finding ways to combine their abilities. gem also often finds herself in the company of pearl, the two developing a close friendship which reflects itself as a strong partnership on the battlefield. all in all, gem is overjoyed to be a fully fledged hero, but occasionally wishes she could just let loose a little
impulse
- one of the senior heroes in both rank and skill, formerly managed the team alongside his closest friend skizz. after skizz’s death, he struggled for a while to maintain his hero duties, letting a lot of the decisions fall on tango’s shoulders. however, after a young and inexperienced gem joined the team, he flung himself headfirst into training her and guiding her towards becoming a capable hero. the two share an easy bond and can often be seen working together both within the headquarters and out on the field
- by nature, impulse generally tries not to hurt any villains or criminals he’s sent to deal with. he much prefers simply teleporting them into prison wagons, where they are then sent through rehabilitation programs. slow to anger, it takes a lot to truly work impulse up into a rage - however, when this does happen, the traps he lays can be monumental
- impulse feels quite a lot of guilt over mumbo’s death, and struggles greatly to comply with his request of not telling his immediate family and friends about the whole being-undead-thing. the knowledge that they’re out there grieving weighs quite heavily on his shoulders, and behind the scenes, he has been searching for ways to subtly compensate them for their loss
- not-so-secretly, impulse greatly prefers working within the walls of the headquarters. whether it be developing new technology with tango and mumbo, or training new recruits, or even just handling paperwork. while he is a capable fighter, he’s much more at home when making the cogs and gears of the hero corp turn

anyways can’t stop thinking about my cowboy au and have been so tempted to just drop the character descriptions so many times that im just doing it now 👍 yay
MAIN CHARACTERS:
"Mumbo" J. Beau — civilian scientist, witness to a terrible mass murder by the Armint local officers, framed for it, hunted down relentlessly by them and with an inordinate bounty on his head. Ill-equipped for life on the run in every regard.
Ren "The Dog" King — disgraced ex-sheriff of Harmonia. Shot and killed a man and his family. No legal punishment, but pressured by the wealthy to resign. Left his deputy, Jimmy, to pick up the pieces. Now a rogue gunslinger helping where he can.
OUTLAWS:
"Scarlet" Pearl Moon — notorious outlaw, brutal killer and thief. Known as "Scarlet Pearl", she rarely rides through a town unnoticed. Infamous and greatly feared for her reputation, she prefers the comforts of the wilderness to being shunned by civilisation. Kennelmaster and wolf tamer. Used work with the (now) bounty hunter Scott and kingpin Cleo as law-abiding mercenaries, before Cleo turned to a life of crime, and then, after Scott became a self-employed bounty hunter, her murder of his rival in the business earned his never-faltering quest to enact justice. Occasionally associates with Etho, Joel, and Impulse.
Joel Smalls — small-time outlaw, mainly just roams Armint and the surrounding country. Cowboy, associate of Mr. Goodtimes, lover of Lady Shadow. Knows Scarlet Pearl, commonly around Ren, Bdubs, and Skizz.
"Scar" Goodtimes — snake oil salesman, conman, grifter, and prolific scoundrel. Head of the Goodtimes Ring, based in Truede. Successful, sinister, and silver-tongued. Joel is one of his boys. Has a rivalry and an agreement with Cleo.
Cleo Rotford — renowned bootlegger and criminal mastermind. The underworld "King" of Maelstrom. The head of the Rotford Gang, and one of the scariest people in the state. Picks up information and buyers from everywhere and supplies it to her band. Connections with almost everyone, including Impulse, BigB, Etho, and Scar.
"Tango" Tex — frequent locomotive thief and hijacker going by the alias of "Tango". Makes it his profession. Advanced vehicular engineer. Used to ride with Impulse and Skizz when they were youths. Never left his life of crime. An associate of Cleo's.
Grian "The Deputy" Rye — infamous solo outlaw known as "The Deputy". Perpetrator of many grand robberies, as well as several murders. Advanced demolitionist, fond of using dynamite in his schemes. Will sometimes collaborate with Tango or work with Impulse, but otherwise a loner.
CIVILIANS:
B. "Double-O" Oz. Owens — architect with an honest profession and a passion for horses. Helps out at the stables in his free time, and sometimes works as a horsemaster for hire. Currently the horsemaster of the Armint saloon and a friend and associate of Ren, as well as Skizz and Joel.
Skizz Le'Mann — bartender of the Armint saloon and expert cook. Friends with Bdubs, Joel, and Ren. Used to run in a gang with Impulse and Tango when they were young, but has since turned honest, except for his sympathetic tendencies and fondness for harbouring criminals and aiding and abetting.
Lady Lizzie Shadow — heiress of the wealthy Shadow family and their railway business. Taught to be a good daughter and successor, but has a rebellious streak, especially in her interest to the outlaw Joel from Armint, though she herself lives in Harmonia. Her father hired Martyn to hunt him down. Friend of Jimmy's.
"Impulse" S.V. — Maelstrom engineer and mechanic, particularly fond of horology, though widely known in the criminal world as a smuggler and information broker. Thus known to most outlaws in the state, including Cleo, Scar, Pearl, and Grian. Used to run in a gang with Skizz and Tango, the law thinks he's turned honest.
THE LAW:
Jimmy Solidarity — deputy and interim sheriff of Harmonia, forced into the latter position after Ren's resignation, though wildly inexperienced. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, but in over his head. Commonly associated and working with Martyn, also friends with Lizzie.
Martyn Littlewood — bounty hunter, primarily after Ren's head with a fervour. Known for his ruthlessness and cunning. Not afraid to work with criminals to get what he wants. Works alongside Jimmy often. Also hired to capture Joel.
Gem "Gemini" Tay — bounty hunter that generally runs solo but oftentimes works with Scott. Proficient at surviving in the wilderness and prefers it, and excellent hunter. After Scarlet Pearl, though will relentlessly take any bounty, digging into every lead without remorse.
Scott S. Major — bounty hunter who sometimes works with Gem. Prefers to coast towns and mingle with locals. Became hunter after Cleo turned to building a criminal empire, now dedicated to Pearl's capture after she killed his rival. Unforgiving, and will take any mark, no matter how dangerous or influential.
LONERS AND OTHERS:
Etho Slab — survivalist and recluse. Lives and breathes the wilderness and refuses to wander into civilisation. Has little care for its justice system, either, and will help criminals occasionally. Recently somewhat living alongside with Scarlet Pearl. Connections with both Mme. Rotford and Mr. Goodtimes.
"Big" B. Stats — lone mercenary and gunslinger. Will serve both the law and outlaws as he wishes, if the pay allows. Holed up in an abandoned hotel in the country. Very solitary, except on jobs. Often thought of as a cryptid. Has worked with Cleo, Martyn, Tango, and Grian. Silver-tongued yet strange.

Fellow netherborn spotted!
It was so cute how excited Tango was about her skin, especially when everyone else was ragging on it. And it looked like a ghast to me. With the happy ghast lore I thought ghastborn probably need goggles to protect their sensitive eyes.
