Abortion: The debate on personhood
Abortion is one of the most talked about subjects in our day in society. Factions of the debate include the Pro-Life and Pro-Choice majorities.
The Pro-Choice activists are dedicated to passing legislation on allowing abortion as a freedom of choice by women across the US. Activists believe that having a pregnancy and a child does not fulfill a woman's womanhood. It is a woman's choice on whether or not to abort a fetus in order to fulfill her goals. Activists do not see a person inside the womb of a soon-to-be mother but a fetus brought about by a fertilized zygote.
Pro-Life activists are dedicated to passing legislation to not allow abortion to take place anywhere in the US with one exception. Abortion is seen as morally okay when the mother's life is threatened by the fetus. Activists believe that it is the natural order for a woman to have a child; a woman will not fulfill their duty as a woman unless she bears a child. Abortion construes the natural order of things. Activists also believe that there are gender specific duties that are established by the natural order, not choice.
As Pre-Meds, it is imperative that we know about the debate and have an opinion on the matter. The two paragraphs above define the world-views on both sides of the debate, which were documented by Kristin Luker. I encourage you to look into news articles and see what everybody is saying about the debate. Some questions to consider:
What is a person? Is a fetus a person? At what point can we start calling it a person?
Does a woman need a child to fulfill herself in life? Is it a choice?
How does Luker's sociological accounts help the arguments made by Thompson, Noonan, and Glover? Does it affect them at all?
