[ She put the jar back. Ulalume picked up her own fork and started eating from the other bowl. ]

[ Ulalume said like it was common knowledge, twirling around a slice of onion in the soup. ]

“No. No no no no no, you don’t—do you even understand the level of chaos that would befall the world were Luca Fauntleroy to go missing?! Do you understand the diplomatic incident that would spark?? The spontaneous thunderstorms?? The fashion crisis?! The dramatics?! The trail of rose petals and fire?! He would escape before you even reached the carriage!!!”

He paces. He flutters. He nearly walks face-first into a wall.

“He’s made of silk and pure nerve! He once picked three locks with a hairpin and a quote from his father!! He would convince you he was meant to be kidnapped and you would end up making him a cup of tea while he critiques your wallpaper!”

He clutches his chest, breathless.

“Besides… I—I would be forced to storm a castle to retrieve him. I would write your ransom demands in perfect cursive and duel a goose to get him back if I must. I—I have a sword. Somewhere. I mean I don’t like it but I could use it. I would die trying. You don’t understand. I—I—”

He breaks off.

“…He makes me laugh when I’m so anxious I forget how. He’s insufferable. And brilliant. And he eats too many sugar cubes. And if you so much as scuff his coat, I will collapse into an unmanageable state of vengeance that lasts until the end of time.”

He breathes. Straightens his vest.

“Also, he owes me two buttons and half a scarf. So no, you may not kidnap him.”
