When my dad was working at Chruch’s Fried Chicken he liked to prank the new employees by walking up and asking if they checked the temperature of the deep friers. When the employee inevitably said no, he’d stick his finger in the deep frier, pull it out, shake it off and say it’s the right temperature.

Almost consistently there was some very disgruntled cursing of a poor employee getting their finger burnt.

He continued to do this when he became manager.

Okay I’m a comic book nerd, I need to gush over this.

[ORV Webtoon, Episode 11]

This is brilliant. Absolutely genius and I love it.

It makes more sense with the context of the novel, but it’s executed MUCH better in the webtoon and I adore it.

We know from the novel that the panels that appear in front of the incarnations aren’t just a visible panel, but they are also read “aloud” in the incarnations’ heads. It’s the voices in their head. They tried to show this in the webtoon by adding the “DING!” sound effect and Sangah mentions it every now and then, but it doesn’t really make sense.

Without that context (and I see this a lot in fanfics that either don’t know and/or don’t remember that the panels are read “aloud” to the incarnation), it’s misunderstood that that panels appear in is entirety and the incarnation has to take the time to read it.

Now. Why is this screenshot so good? Well. Let me just tell you.

With the context of the panels being read aloud, this is just cinematic at this point. Imagine this:

The panel is reading out information Dokja already knows. He knows everything about this man. And yet he checks anyways, his final confirmation that this is really happening, that this is not a dream.

The panel appears in front of him. He’s watching the words type out as the voice in his head just confirms this horrid reality. It’s literally being spelled out for him. He’s scanning the information for anything that can help him, anything that can keep him alive.

Then a hand shoots out of the panel, cutting off not only the words but the sounds as Dokja’s concentration snaps and a hand is holding him by the neck over a bridge. His little bubble of information has been burst and he’s been pulled back into reality.

That is the mastery of this scene.

In the novel, it doesn’t work as well. It just trails off.

There’s no sudden cut off. No surprise.

Sometimes there are things only a visual storyteller can do. And sometimes there are things that can only work in a text based story. Neither are wrong.

But damn was this scene right.

There was a war going on and one side was beginning to run out of weapons. A young soldier asked for a gun and his commander gave him a broom. "What am I supposed to do with this?" asked the soldier. "If you see someone in the distance say 'Bang-ity Bang-ity Bangity!'" "And if they're close up?" "Say 'Stab-ity stab-ity stab-ity!' Good luck!" The soldier went out with his broom feeling pretty stupid and then he saw an enemy soldier in the distance so he aimed him broom and said "Bang-ity bang-ity bang-ity!" and the enemy soldier fell down dead. Confused the solider continued on, when an enemy soldier popped up in front of him. The soldier took his broom and said "Stab-ity stab-ity stab-ity!" and the enemy soldier died. Then the young soldier saw an enemy soldier walking slowly toward him. He took his broom and said "Bang-ity bang-ity bang-ity!" and nothing happened, the enemy soldier kept getting closer. Again he shouted "Bang-ity bang-ity bang-ity!" The enemy solider kept on walking and he was really close now. "Stab-ity stab-ity stab-ity!" Nothing happened. The last thing that young solider ever heard was what the enemy soldier was chanting over and over again.

“Tank-ity tank-ity tank-ity!”
