Arcane Background Lore/Easter Eggs (Episode 1)

‘Kay so, I have spent a frankly unreasonable amount of time learning League of Legends lore. Since I gather that’s not the case for everyone watching the show (and thank god for that), here’s some details I picked up on while watching the shows. These will vary in caliber from: “fun fact” to “I could use that for a fanfic”, enjoy.

The Cupcakes

In League of Legends, Caitlyn can set up traps for her enemies, as a visual gag these use cupcakes as bait that look EXACTLY like the ones we see at the start of the show – Which resulted in me spending the entire 1st episode thinking the heist was a setup by the enforcers.

Clagor’s Goggles

Vi’s default model in League wears goggles just like these :’)

The Hex Crystals

So listen, there’s a reason Arcane doesn’t bother explaining where hex crystals come from, but if you are curious: They are the crystalized consciousness of these giant, magical, hyperintelligent scorpions called Brackern, who refer to them as “namestones”. While a namestone it’s host Brackern the consciousness within the stone experiences extreme pain and distress. So yeah, Piltover basically runs on “I have no mouth and I must scream” technology, League lore can get weeeeird.

Zaun’s Layers

Zaun (aka. The south side) is split into 3 vertical layers. From top to bottom these are are: Topside (In older lore called “The Promenade”), The Undercity (which the Lanes are a part of – In older lore: “the Entresol”), and The Sump (Seen in episode 6). The higher up you live, the better off you generally are, though even the Promenade looks like slums compared to Piltover.

Kinkou Monks

These two background characters look to be members of the Kinkou order of monks (based on the ceremonial masks) from the island of Ionia. I am not going to try to explain what the order’s deal is for such a minor appearance, look up the character “Shen” if you’re curious.

Vander’s Nickname

So you might have heard a theory going around from people who know League lore that Vander isn’t quite as dead as he appears at the end of Episode 3. That theory is partially based off of this nickname and if it ends up being unconfirmed, I’ll go back and explain it here, otherwise I’ll just say: 🐺

Zaun Gray

The enforcers don’t just wear masks while in Zaun to look intimidating (though that’s probably also a part of it). The lower you get in Zaun, the more you’re exposed to the “Zaun Gray”, the mix of poisonous gasses that pollute the city. Zaunites like Vi, Powder and Vander are so used to it, they don’t register it beyond the air topside feeling nicer to breathe, but to people like Marcus and Grayson it’s probably like walking through a smokehouse.

Buhru Tattoos

This minor character’s tattoos denote them as a member of the Buhru people. Without going into too much detail, they are an indigenous culture native to an area called the Serpent Isles, and they worship a kraken/sea serpent goddess called Nagakabouros – This will be slightly relevant in later episodes.

Illaoi - The Prophet of Nagakabouros

Illaoi is not going to appear in Arcane, except maybe as like a post credit teaser for season two, but LOOK HOW FUCKING BIG SHE IS! As a bisexual woman, I think its very important we all appreciate how big Illaoi is.

Everytime I look at the characters of Tokyo Revengers, I immediately imagine Wakui's train of thought as he conjured them went something like this-

Wakui: "What is a gender? Not enough people question this wild phenomenon. Why is gender? Why does gender have stereotypes? Why must a gender conform to what is often associated with it? Who's to say someone's gender is actually representative of who they are? Gender doesn't always come down to one's appearance. Maybe it comes down to how they feel, has anyone ever thought about that?"

One of the editorial team members: "...What the heck are you going on about right now??"
