one of my most firmly held beliefs is there's no such thing as an inappropriate book for a kid and people try to debate me saying like buhhhhhh I shouldnt have been reading the things I did when I was a kid and it's like cool but did you die??? did anything bad happen to you?? or were you allowed to think about what you did and didn't know and walk away when something got too intense or whatever.

#I read flowers in the attic as a kid and so did my mom and just about everyone she knew at a similar age #and despite its explicit incestuous minor-on-minor rape scene it had no actual negative impact on me (or her) because it was Just A Book #even as a kid I was like wow this is fucked up AND riveting and I am still in every conceivable way just as fine as I was #it is fundamentally the same as hearing someone say ‘hey wouldn’t it be fucked up if ……’ and going ‘yeah that would be pretty fucked up’

I just do not understand the very concept of an anti-zionist convert, especially those as rigid and self-isolating as the ones I see here on tumblr. Genuinely, if you fundamentally refuse to engage with mainstream Jewish perspectives on core Jewish values, if you can’t even stand to worship in the same congregation as the average Jew, I wonder that you felt it necessary to convert in the first place. You can’t just leap out of the mikvah and declare that only a tiny portion of Jews worldwide are actually worthy of being your people and all the rest can be written off as categorically evil. I really wonder what the point ever was.

#I considered myself anti-Zionist when I started my conversion #but it was only possible to remain that way not knowing dick about squat #and being a sincere and eager conversion student I couldn’t stay ignorant for long #it seems self evident to me that the conversion process itself necessarily disabuses you of anti-jewish ignorance #but of course that’s only assuming that the process is sincerely undertaken to begin with #and truly the only explanation I can offer myself for how someone can spend a year or more integrating themself into an indigenous group…#…and still deny that group their indigenous rights upon achieving integration is insincerity and malice #and if there is a leftist reading this and coming to the conclusion that the conversion process must be a malicious brainwashing program…#…I want you to take a minute and ask yourself which other minority ethnic groups you’d be comfortable saying that about #I know how you think because I thought like you once #and calling it ‘thought’ at all now is being very charitable
