A few days ago my sister made a comment saying that Tadashi is t o o perfect, that he is intelligent, kind, responsible, but also confident, optimistic, and fun. She said she doesn’t like him because he’s unrealistic, and that made me realize something:
Tadashi Hamada is unrealistically flawless. And that is completely intentional. It is intentional because as the audience, you are supposed to empathize with Hiro; you are supposed to see from his point of view.
Tadashi is more of an ideal than an actual character — he is Hiro’s ideal as a role model, but he is also Hiro’s foil and the catalyst in Hiro’s story, because Hiro looks up to Tadashi more than you realize. Despite his nonchalant attitude, Hiro actually idolizes his brother. Since Mr. and Mrs. Hamada died when Hiro was 3, Hiro would have depended on his older brother even more than most children. Tadashi would have tried as hard as he could to be that model for Hiro. So Hiro looks up to his brother a lot. They have the same interests, the same catchphrases, a sibling handshake, and when Tadashi dies, “nerd school” loses all meaning to Hiro and he regresses back into a bot fighter.
Basically, Tadashi meant a lot to Hiro, and while in reality Tadashi may have some severe flaws (there are undertones of an inferiority complex hinted at in the prequel manga Baymax), in Hiro’s eyes, Tadashi has no flaws, which is why you see him that way too.
