Love your sparks band art. How’d you get into them in the first place? What’s your indoctrination story!

Thanks for the awesome question! I haven’t yapped about the Mael brothers in a while, so here we go :^D

The veeeery first time I’ve ever heard of Sparks was back in 2015 during their collab with Franz Ferdinand. I was a huge fan of FF at that time (still am tbh) and FFS completely blew my mind. Unfortunately, for the stupid 15 y.o. me FFS was this cool project by Franz Ferdinand and just some random guys, so I didn’t get into Sparks at that time (I still feel guilty about that).

Fast forward 8 years later and during the summer of 2023 I got obsessed with new wave. Some of my personal favs at that time were Duran Duran, Oingo Boingo and DEVO, which in retrospect explains perfectly why I was about to go absolutely MAD for Sparks.

At that time, thanks to the algorithms, I was slowly getting into Sparks: starting with Progress (ngl for a few months I genuinely thought it was a song by DEVO), Popularity and a bunch of songs from Propaganda and Angst.

But what really pushed my sparksomania in the full swing was when I realized just how incredibly funny and clever they are. The more I was listening/reading the lyrics the more I was falling in love with the Mael brothers and their music.

There is a formula on how to get me hooked to any media: it needs to have a comedic duo (preferably two guys) with completely opposite personalities and a great chemistry between them (bonus points for the height difference). And Ron and Russ fit all the criteria.

Their music is one of those things what feels like it was crafted specifically to your taste. I’m genuinely so thankful for them and for the fact that they’re still here making a banger after a banger
