The fact that you submitted your farewell to the stupid burn book just proves that you were trolling people all along. Why? What kind of pleasure do you honestly get by telling people you're making something, and then not doing it? Was it the tiny bit of attention you got when you first came out, or was it because you're staff and trying to get users to rattle the cage? There's literally no advantage to fake make a game.
Dear anonymous,
It’s really disheartening to receive messages like this.
This was a project organized by VMK players and we were really hoping it would be successful. We truly believe there should be an inclusive, safe, and respectful VMK remake that emphasizes Disney values and community. We started the project by thinking about a larger framework and what kind of environment we wanted to create for our friends and players like you. We have working code, portions that have to be re-written or scripted, and a framework for an economy and value system. We have ideas for staff cohesion and bonding. We have a database of items, lists of potential themes, and ideas for quests. All VMU team members talked at length about issues that have come up in remakes, such as cyberbullying, corruption, and other significant flaws.
Unfortunately, a mix of personal and other factors have derailed the project. For example, as stated in our earlier community updates, we are in dire need of coders to move forward (if you know of any, please send them to us!). This is a large-scale project that requires consistent and high-quality work and we weren’t able to build out a team that could accomplish our goals (yet). That’s not trolling - that’s just an unfortunate reality. We had a long and hard discussion about pausing development and it certainly wasn’t something we took lightly.
Finally, we submitted our closing remarks to the ‘burn blog’ because we know that’s a well-known site that many VMK community members use. It was a way to share our message to the larger community beyond our immediate followers.
We’re keeping our shared drive open and invite any community member who would like to help us finalize the project and bring it to fruition to message us.
With magic,
The VMU team

Community Update 5
Dear MyVMK community,
It is with heavy hearts that we write to share with you that we will be closing this project.
The past few months have been a lot of fun. It was a really wonderful experience to work together on VMU - late nights messaging on Slack, getting to know one another in game, and talking about our love for VMK and the potential for VMU. We truly believed we would help meet the needs of the MyVMK community and provide the template for a fun and inclusive online community. We explored design options, recruited team members, held in-depth discussions on the economy and how to best run VMU, and more. We lamented the trash talk and crass behavior and bullying we've seen across the community. We talked about the importance of building an inclusive, safe, and friendly community for MyVMK members. We committed to reinforcing Disney values and building a community from the ground up together.
Unfortunately, given the need for a talented Java coder, we are unable to continue building Virtual Magic Universe.  However, this isn't the permanent shuttering of the project. We are still going to continue working together in an informal manner. When anyone wants to join the VMU team, we'll welcome you with open arms. When it's time to rekindle the project, we'll brush the dust off our files and partner with anyone who is interested in our mission and values. If you ever need a place to go or want to build an alternative community in the spirit of VMK and MyVMK, we are here to support you.
Thank you for all of your support. See you around the Kingdom! ;)

Community Update 4
Dear VMU family,
Thank you so much for your patience and support during the development of VMU. As you know, we are committed to building this for and by players and adhering to Disney values, most notably transparency and respect. We've been silent for quite some time and know that we owe you and the VMU community an update.
There are now only three of us working on VMU. Our other two incredible teammates, including our founder and primary Java coder, VMU_Romeo, are taking a leave of absence due to personal and work commitments. The three of us have been working on the website and developing norms and frameworks. We’ve made enormous strides and are excited to introduce a new team member very soon, but we need more help with coding and designing. In efforts to find assistance, we've reached out to well-recognized individuals who worked and/or work closely on the development of alternative recreations and, unfortunately, were unable to move forward due to lack of support.
All of us bring something amazing and helpful to the table, but we can't move forward with just the three of us. We really want VMU to become a reality for everyone and are in this for the best reasons. We are part of a wonderful community and are so passionate about the game. This is a voluntary project that we have dedicated a lot of time and heart to alongside personal, school, and work commitments, and we are reaching out in desperate need of some community love and support.
If you are interested in moving VMU forward as a coder or designer and helping us go above and beyond the potential of the game, please e-mail us at [email protected]. We are also available via Tumblr in the Ask or via chat.
With VMU magic and hope, VMU_Toucan, VMU_Lightning, and VMU_Anakin

Meet the Staff ft. VMU_Anakin!
Hi everyone!
The VMU team is hard at work creating the framework for VMU (thanks for answering our questions below!), building our website, and working on the Java script.
We believe it's important to introduce our staff members one by one to our community and share our hope and vision for the game. That's why, every few weeks, we will feature one member of the VMU team and to answer some questions - we encourage you to submit some, too!
Let’s meet...VMU_Anakin!
Why did you choose your username? I’ve been called Anakin my whole life by family and friends! I share a lot of the same traits as him and that’s why my family started calling me that. I’m also a huge Star Wars fan!
Why did you join the VMU team? I joined the VMU team because I believed in it since day one when I first heard of it. I knew that VMU is exactly what the VMK fan community needs. I wanted to be a part of it and I can’t wait to show my full potential during my time with my new team. I feel very honored to be on the Jedi Council ;)
What is your favorite Disney movie and/or TV show: Tough call! I would say Star Wars Saga, obviously :P but the next one be Toy Story!
What is your favorite VMK item? Stitch hat!
What is your favorite ice cream flavor? Cookie Dough and Blue Milk for the win!
Have you been to Walt Disney World or Walt Disney Land? If so, what is your favorite ride? My favorite ride would be the new improved Star Tours! It looks amazing, though don’t tell the Empire I was too thrilled with seeing the Death Star explode at the end!
What are you most excited about for VMU?What I’m most excited for is to be in a healthy community. I can’t wait to be able to be able to help others when VMU opens! I’m really looking forward to it! I hope to see you around the Magic Kingdom!

Meet the Staff ft. VMU_Toucan
Hi everyone!
We’d like to introduce our staff members one by one to our community. Every few weeks, we will feature one member of the VMU team to introduce themselves. We encourage you to submit questions!
Let’s meet...VMU_Toucan!
Tumblr media
Why did you choose your username? Toucans are my favorite bird - they’re so colorful!
Why did you join the VMU team? I really loved playing VMK when I was younger and I feel that we can truly re-create, at least as best as possible, the spirit of VMK. I think this is a great and timely opportunity to bring back and highlight all of the positive things about VMK - a strong, close-knit, and supportive community; innovative and creative in-game quests, items, and games; a way to love Disney in an untraditional way; and, of course, all the fun hanging out with one another and exploring the Kingdom.
What is your favorite Disney movie and/or TV show: My favorite Disney movie is The Little Mermaid. I love swimming and the ocean and always used to pretend I was a mermaid when I was a kid. I also admire Ariel for always being optimistic and pursuing her dreams, being fearless, and championing everyone, even if they’re different...and her hair is perfect. My throwback favorite Disney Channel TV shows are definitely Lizzie McGuire and Kim Possible. I also love Phineas and Ferb. They’re so funny!
What is your favorite VMK item? Good question! For clothes, I am a huge fan of gold ears and Lilo’s dress. In terms of pins, the holidays are coming up and I really love the holiday pins (especially the candy cane one). The Dreams Poster was my favorite poster in the game.
What is your favorite ice cream flavor? Cookies and cream forever.
Have you been to Walt Disney World or Walt Disney Land? If so, what is your favorite ride? I have been to both and I have two favorite rides: Soarin’ (Disney Land) and It’s a Small World (Disney World). I have great memories associated with both. Not so much the Stitch ride (now closed), though...way too realistic. Plus when he spit/sneezed on the riders I was really grossed out.
What are you most excited about for VMU? I am so excited to meet all of the players and host quests with fun prizes. I spent a lot of time on VMK exploring the Kingdom and I’m excited to share my love of all the lands with the VMU community! I’m also strongly lobbying to bring back hidden mickeys.

Community Update 3
Dear VMK family,
Thank you for all of your suggestions and kind messages! We are so grateful for your support.
Where we are: We have closed the coder application form and are scheduling interviews over the next week and a half.
What’s next:  As soon as we conclude the interview process, VMU_Romeo and the new members of our team will finalize some loose ends in the Java script and work closely with designers to ensure all items, including clothing, will be as Disney perfect as can be. We may also upload live videos of the Universe (featuring VMU_Toucan, who is looking forward to being a star!). At the same time, our staff will begin a discussion on structuring the economy and taking into account your suggestions on how we can best create a kind and inclusive, as well as fun, community. Some of you have asked how we will achieve this: well, between your input and our vision, we will be sharing our ideas closer to launch! Lastly, our website is almost done and we are excited to integrate this blog and community engagement forum with the VMU website.
We encourage you to continue sending us your suggestions and thoughts. The VMU team envisions a community supported and enhanced by all members, and we appreciate your feedback.
With magic,
The VMU team

Community Update 1
The VMU team is dedicated to transparency and creating a kind and respectful community. We are working very hard despite personal challenges to make a game for players, by players.
We are disappointed and deeply discouraged to hear rumors of falsification of our identity in the community. We have neither created new or renamed avatars or accounts on any game sites nor have we falsified information about ourselves, our progress, or this project. Any statements made or accounts that contradict this are illegitimate and false. We do not condone this untrue narrative and dismissive behavior. It is disrespectful to the Disney values we espouse.
We believe strongly in unity, creating a welcoming community, and engaging positively with one another. We do not engage in or support activities and/or discussions that lack integrity and degrade our beliefs and mission. The VMU team continues to uphold, celebrate, and stand up for Disney values as we move forward on our project.

FAQ Session 1
VMK family,
Since our announcement, we have received many questions about who we are, what our progress is, and when we will be ready.
Who we are: Our backstory is simple. We are 5 original VMK players who miss the fun and genuine atmosphere of VMK. We come from across the US and our ages range from 18-26. Our backgrounds are diverse: some of us have extensive coding experience, work on social media outreach, play with graphic design, and more. We play tennis, practice yoga, jam in a band, enjoy cooking, and LOVE Disney! You can find us playing Pirates of the Caribbean, hanging out in trading rooms, and building games and rooms across the Kingdom.
Where we are: VMU is a Java script pieced together from publicly available pieces of the source code and partially written by our coder, Romeo. The majority of the code has already been written - as you can see on our Updates page, we have accomplished a lot! We take great pride in the creativity of our coder, who has done a fantastic job upgrading the game despite not having a background in coding. So, why reach out for more coders now? Well, we are looking to expand our team to include trusted coders to speed up development and ensure that the game has a long-term, sustainable framework. The upgrade to Java has taken a long time and we believe players will benefit from a stronger coding team in the short, medium, and long-term. After the launch, our plan is to create an open source community to ensure that everyone has a chance to make VMU a special place. Regarding designers, we want to bring in innovative and creative players who want to turn their most-loved pieces of the Walt Disney kingdom to life in VMU. We have consulted with and reached out to former designers and are actively recruiting both coders and designers here.
What’s next: Over the next few weeks, we hope to recruit a dedicated team of hosts, staff, designers, and coders and run alpha and beta testing to ensure that every piece of the game runs as smoothly as possible. As of now, the details of this testing are unclear for a variety of reasons, such as personal scheduling conflicts. We will create a framework of values for the economic structure of the game, what pre-registration and registration will look like, and how and when items will be released. We are brainstorming quest ideas, reflecting on what we would most love to see re-created in VMU, and debating how to best elevate in-game activities and participation. While we do not yet have a set launch date, we hope to set one in the near future so that everyone can mark their calendars to join us on this adventure!
The VMU community depends on transparency and ensuring that every player has a voice. We firmly believe that VMU is a game for players, by players. To this end, we promise to continue providing updates on this blog and answering all questions as fairly and openly as possible. We will be answering sets of submitted questions in different, numbered sessions for easy archiving and taking suggestions through the Submissions link on our page, as well as posting surprise updates. The team will also be running polls to collect opinions on quest ideas, item development, and more.
Being a part of the VMK community is a special privilege. Continuing the VMK journey and experience is an exciting opportunity and we are thrilled to share our vision of and work on VMU with you. Stay tuned for more updates!
With magic, The VMU team

Introducing VMU
Dear VMK family,
Today, we are happy to launch our new blog to share our progress and vision for Virtual Magic Universe, or VMU.
Our group’s founder, Romeo, said it simply when he gathered us to join him on this journey: “I feel that VMU should be the true remake that VMK should have been. What I mean by that is that I want players to re-feel that same feeling they did when they first appeared in Esplanade.”
We are working hard to make this a reality: upgrading the game to Java, crafting a framework, brainstorming mini-game and quest ideas, and establishing values that support our mission to create a transparent, fun, and supportive community.
As we move forward, we hope you will join us in supporting this vision. Please submit any questions using the “Message” button, and look for updates on our page as we approach our launch date.
With magic,
The VMU team
