Y’know I sometimes hear fellow Gen Zers be nostalgic about the early years mainly the 2010s, but honestly all I can think of is REALLY?

I’m kinda jealous of kids these days whose online fandom autism comes from amazing stuff like The Gaslight District, Amazing Digital Circus, Lackadaisy, Hades and Vampire Survivors, and many other things I didn’t mention rn

Meanwhile what did I have? Growing up in High School 2013-2019 the only beyond decent thing that has stood the test of time is Undertale, and I suppose Night in the Woods on a smaller scale, but the rest? I was in the Voltron Legendary Defender fandom (that name will have triggered at least one traumatic flashback to some) Minecraft was still uncool and cringe, the Brony fandom was lurking around every corner, and I discovered my sexuality through fucking FNaF yaoi no wonder I’m so developmentally ill

At this point I’d be willing to put up with whatever tf skibidi toilet is if it meant I got this kind of stuff in my teen years, and even then, from Zoomer to Zoomer, let’s stop acting like We were any better, we laughed our ass off at shitty videos of the TF2 man saying naughty words, and this was when people thought saying the R word was no big deal

Even on the YouTuber front it’s not like we had any better, on a negative note not much has changed, but supporting my argument is that not much as changed.

We had screaming fellas overacting to Happy Wheels who have a weird interest in kids, now there’s screaming fellas overacting to Fortnite who have a weird interest in kids.

There’s also music but that’s a whole other story to dig into.

Idk I am pretty Nostalgia-Averse/Cynical unlike what seems most of my generation (shut the fuck about Frutiger Aero please, because 1) Webcore is superior in every way and 2) Windows Vista sucked ass as much as I liked some of its aesthetic, I do love 2000s games beach levels tho) so instead of being “the old stuff was better” I do the mirrored whining of “the new stuff is better”

I’m just glad the 2010s are over and hey, maybe I’ll also be glad the 2020s will be over one day all I know is I prefer to look forward towards the future and I don’t really like lingering in the past for the sake of moaning.

Tbh even besides the jokes I just feel that this is a very powerful monologue and character moment that my family would often remind me of whenever I had trouble at school, it taught me how to respond to mockery especially lazy one, yes this was basically the 19th century version of “you have one joke” so I like to think a Trans themed parody of it isn’t so far fetched

My country’s Netflix is getting rid of Yu Yu Hakusho at the end of the month so leave it to me to only NOW checking it out

Anyways I’m 6 episodes through and I quite like what I’m seeing, I’m planning to finish at least the first season since that’s the most realistic goal. One of the reasons I like it so much is how remarkably in-depth and mature it is for a shonen anime from the 90s, and that’s mainly with the characters.

Starting with the main character, Yusuke is quickly established as a cynical thug who doesn’t care about anyone or anything, but him showing genuine concern for a boy at the cost of his life shows that he’s got a heart and stops being a punk when around children.

Same goes for Kazuma, he’s a meathead bully on the surface but by episode 6 it’s clear that he’s so much more, he may be a rival to Yusuke but it’s not a hate-filled rivalry and he seems to respect him dearly, in fact this extends to his gang too as seen in Episode 3, they swoop in for Keiko when bothered by another gang telling them to pick it with someone their own size, they’re shown to have concerns beyond fighting, and it’s clear that they abide by a strict honour code.

Everyone in the cast defies their stereotypes, even Principal Takenaka being a fair but strict figure contrasting the other teachers who are just the worst, and Yusuke’s mother, she’s a selfish and depressed alcoholic but it also becomes very clear that she cares about her son and (kinda) hates how she behaves.

But you know what? Not every character must be this deconstructive masterwork to be great, I love the whole afterlife cast, Botan is awesome and yes, Koenma being a tiny boss isn’t original but it’s still funny how they handle these characters.

In a way er, thank you Netflix for urging me to check this out? Nah it still sucks that it’s going away soon, still if the quality keeps up I’ll think about getting a DVD set of season 1 even if they’re hard to come by, I may even check the rest of the series apparently Season 2 is just a big tournament anime lmao

A lot of advice I hear online from Gundam fans regarding how to get into the series is “oh just watch the movie trilogy of 79 it cuts out a lot of filler and it’s smoother” these people should be arrested for lying.

I’m kidding of course, people are free to experience the series however they like, but still as someone who’s getting through the anime and saw the first recap movie twice, in my honest opinion I can’t see how the Gundam movies are in any way a replacement for the original series.

The main argument for the movies is “oh it cuts down the filler” what filler? You mean Captain Paolo’s funeral? The biggest authority in the crew dying is filler? The substory of Zeon soldiers helping a Federation mother and child putting their differences aside is filler? The explanation that the Mobile Suit remembers past battles is filler? The entire cast getting more screen time and room to develop is filler?

Yeah no I don’t think so, the recap movies are honestly the worst way to experience 79, they cut out SO much that you might as well just be watching a YouTube recap video, I mean the show is only 42 episodes or so, and let me tell you for the time that is TAME, lots of 70s anime averaged at 70+ episodes, some heavy hitters like Mazinger Z breached the 90s, so about 40 episodes is a breeze.

Plus well, they also just suck as independent movies, the first movie feels like it should’ve ended with Garma’s last stand, but Nope, it just keeps going and includes the arc with Amuro’s mother, it reminds me of the latest Hunger Games movie in the “cram as much shit as we can pacing be damned” vibes and not in a good way.

If you really want to get into the original Gundam who actually Cares about getting it through as quickly as possible when you sacrifice SO much? Just watch the whole series at your own pace and you’re good, hell if you don’t like subs you can even watch the dub passively, 79 has a surprisingly excellent dub by Adult Swim from the early 2000s, I think it’s the same lads as the iconic English Lupin dub.

I’d say the best compromise is to just watch the first movie and if you like it then start over with the series because honestly the films are NOT worth it and I’m getting a bit annoyed at so many members of the fanbase promoting them because “it’s quicker” or “it cuts out the filler” or “GuNdAm HaMmEr DuMb” as if the idea of a giant robot fighting other giant robots isn’t ridiculous enough by default.

I started watching Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and while I’m waiting to get to Stardust, I’m enjoying Phantom Blood well enough and like, while it’s much tamer compared to the rest of the series I keep wondering what it would feel like to get into this series 200% Blind and just witness the rising chaos:

Episode 1: ah ok this is a grounded period drama alright, what’s up with that mask tho?

Episode 2: wait there’s vampires now? Er fair enough, it’s gothic victorian-y

Episode 3: wait, wuh, hold on WHAT?? Ok that was weird but enjoyable little series… what do you mean there’s more episodes?

I’ve been playing Ys VI Ark of Napishtim lately, I thought I was above playing niche games but oh well, and I Love it

It’s not perfect ofc at times it can be a bit cryptic in that you advance the story by going back and forth like a yo-yo hoping this character will say something else now, and the levelling is Brutal if you’re even one bit under level you can’t do anything, but I literally love everything else about this game and I can’t put it down.

But one aspect I wanna point out in particular is the game’s simplicity, and I mean it in the best possible way.

This is a very straightforward game: it’s open ended but the areas aren’t too huge, there’s NPCs to talk to but it’s not too many to overwhelm you, there’s not a Huge enemy variety, and there’s relatively few items and upgrades that you can get, and by the way games have conditioned us all of this may sound bad, I remember when “linear” was basically a slur, but trust me. It’s fucking Peak.

All of the things I mentioned sound like limitations, but really they took full advantage of the “quality over quantity” principle; the map is sized enough to not make traversal too long and not to make you lost especially early on without a map, and when you’re sick of one area bam, new area just like that.

The NPCs are enough to be memorable, sure there’s some filler ones, but there’s just enough for you to check them all out and interact, this is basically the only game in recent memory where I really speak to Everyone because why not? It’s not that many in each area.

Each area has about three enemy types (ground, flying and poison) and yeah you get the idea by now.

Even in length this is a pretty short game, it’s listed at 12 1/2 hours on Howlongtobeat, and 20 hours if you go for 100%. In 20 hours you could maybe speedrun whats considered a brief JRPG, for some perspective.

I want to bring all of this up because I honestly find it deeply inspiring.

I don’t have much experience with game development, but I have RPGMaker and I one day hope to make my own game with it, an RPG ala Hylics set in my own universe.

Thing is, my biggest inspirations are games like Fallout New Vegas, Disco Elysium, Vampire Bloodlines, Fear and Hunger 2, these are all RICH games that are FAT with substantial content in terms of story writing and quest lines, and I want to do something like that but well, it’s like going to play at the Olympics when you just started thinking about working out, and even when I try scaling back plans it can still be a lot in my planning process and I fear about leaving some stuff out.

But with Ys? This game has taught me that no, it’s ok to keep it dead simple and still make a fun and engaging game, sure I won’t even think about comparing the story with the aforementioned, but it still has a lot of charm and character, especially visually but that’s another story.

Bottom line is, I’ve felt insecure about my game ideas being too ambitious and that it was my only way to make a good game, only for Ys to put that claim to rest

There’s plenty of tropes and cliches I can’t get enough of, but one of my favourite ones I noticed is definitely “there’s two villains who are opposed to each other and the protagonist ends up siding with one of them for pragmatism” there’s just something about a temporary (or not) truce with a former enemy towards a bigger one that excites me.

There’s two recent examples I can think about, the former is from Ghibli’s Castle in the Sky which has already become one of my favourites, basically there are two factions that are after Sheeta: the Government, and Sky Pirates, these two are obviously opposed to each other but also want the same thing, Sheeta’s necklace, and once the Government and Military are cemented as the bigger and stronger enemy, Pazu finds himself having to forge an alliance with the pirates if he has any chance at getting Sheeta back, and this is After the first half hour or so of the movie where the Pirates have been set up as the biggest evil bastards.

Now I want to just rave about this movie alone because I FUCKEN LOVE IT but we must move on, also because if I were to say any more about this movie I’d veer into spoilers and I really want people to experience this for themselves if they haven’t.

The other example of this trope comes from the game System Shock 2, which I’ve been playing a lot recently because I don’t respect myself and play games that are older than me, the game isn’t for everyone but I’m one of those freaks lol

Anyways the premise of the game is that you wake up on an FTL spaceship called the Von Braun, and everything is fucked, and the thing responsible for this situation is an alien life form called The Many who seek to assimilate all life on Earth now that they’re done with the ship.

This is obviously not good and you want to stop it, but you know who else does? The rogue AI SHODAN who was the big bad of the first game, see while she also wants to subjugate humanity, she wants to do so in her image and out of pure delusions of grandeur and superiority, rather than The Many having a more “altruistic” and communitarian viewing of their subjugation.

So basically: while you’re also fundamentally opposed to SHODAN as well, she becomes your close ally throughout the game because she also wants The Many destroyed, as to WHY well that’s irrelevant for now, this is an Oppressive game that’s meant to make you feel desperate, panicked and never safe, so being forced to ally with another evil entity that just so happens to not be the most immediately threatening thing at the moment makes thematic sense.

I really like this trope since it makes a story more intricate in a way that’s easy to understand, and it bums me out that some things like Star Wars don’t take advantage of it, I brought up SW because turns out that the comics had a better sequel trilogy than the one we got, where basically a new Alien empire called the Yuuzhan Vong arrive and they’re bigger and badder than any other force we knew up until now, to the point that it brings everyone together. Yes, even the Republic and the Empire, the two big players of the original series join forces against this new enemy I Love that.
