Ah, but I am not yet settled. My boxes are not all where they must be.

When that labour is done, I think there will be much to occupy me. It has been long since I have been at such a gathering as you call a ‘party.’ I look forward to it greatly. And the opera, too, may be of use, should one secure a private box—and of that, I have the means.

As for these ‘roller skates,’ they are not to my taste. Nor is the train, for I am well content with the means of travel I possess. Even the moving pictures of these machines are not so much to my pleasure.

I know not what this ‘4k’ may mean. I believe he is already caught in the asylum—I saw last night certain men of his doctor bring him back, no doubt to be confined once more in that garment which he so loathes.

But if it is your purpose to draw my attention to his liking of my words, I see no need for it. Mr. Renfield has ever a keen interest in the manner in which I take my drink. And indeed he is one of my 'biggest fans' as it is so put:

Miss Westenra, good girl that she is, has anticipated my needs and has come down from Whitby to be nearer to me. Not so near as I might have wished, for the way from Purfleet to Hillingham is still some distance—yet I suppose it is best so. Should any, by some rare chance, suspect that foul play is at work, their eyes will turn to her place, and not to where I am at Carfax.

There is nothing further that has occurred to-night which is worth setting down.

Do you feel disappointed that you did not turn Lucy into a vampire on Whitby due to her meddling friend? Do you have a new target yet?

I am not yet done with Lucy. I take my time with her, for her blood is rich, and I would not spoil so fine a drink by haste.

Nor have I need of another. Lucy, as she does, has once more come to me. It was most thoughtful of her to change her dwelling for her Master’s sake, that I need not make the long journey to Whitby for her but may visit her here, at my leisure, whilst I begin my work from Carfax.

But I do not wish to hinder them from sending to me. No, I would have it that they come again, and show their face, that I may take from them the means by which they make bold to reach me.

As for your second remark, it gives me no surprise. Mr. Renfield has been most unruly of late. But you are not his Master, and so it is no wonder he heeds you not. You and he are...friends, is it not so? I confess, I do not much trouble myself with the scraps of dogs. Yet even so, a friend is not a Master, and thus you cannot be taken aback that he does not obey you.

And besides, you write to me often enough as it is. Is there need that you should speak through the words of another? If there is something you wish to say to me, then say it.
