Hello Aro Community!!

Some of you may remember seeing me a while ago, asking for participants for my aromantic-focused dissertation study.

I’m now here to share that this dissertation has been completed and graded! It received a 64, giving me a 68 overall for my degree — equal to a 2.1!

With the permission of all of my participants, I am here to share the dissertation for anyone who may wish to read it! It won’t be being published or anything like that, but I worked immensely hard on it and would love for the community to be able to read it!

I hope that anyone who reads it enjoys it. It was a very tough and, at times, disheartening project to accomplish. It took a great deal of work and stress, and narrowly missing out on a 1st was a little gutting. However, I want to share it despite this, because I feel like you will all like it far more than an academic board, haha!

Sharing this took a lot of guts, as I have no plans to ever come out to my family. However, I don’t think any of them have ever been on Tumblr lmao! Besides, I want to share this with the community, despite this fact.

Honestly, I am pretty frustrated by the "haha why would anyone hate ace people" responses to Rowling's tweet.

Don't get me wrong, the support is nice. But if you want to be an ally, you have to do so on our terms, not yours. And that means actually engaging with the aspec community, not just posting positivity every now and again. And what those responses highlight to me is what I've known for a while; you guys only support aspec people when it's easy and convenient.

It's easy to support aspec people when it's J.K. Rowling being awful again. It's easy to support us when it's just reblogging an "aspec people are queer" post.

But what about when we are talking about amatonormativity and the relationship hierarchy? When we are discussing the enforcement of compulsory sexuality? When we are pushing for greater awareness and support for aspec identities that are not asexuality or aromanticism? When we are criticizing terminology that you use but harms us? Because I can tell you right now, I rarely see allo people engage with those posts.

Why do people hate asexuality (or any other aspec identity)? Because it challenges the societal norms that benefit them. And that is uncomfortable and scary. So they turn to hate and oppression in order to assure that the changes we push by just openly existing never happen.

That means that to be a good aspec ally, you can't just make a positivity post every now and again, and you can't just laugh about how stupid aphobes are. You have to openly challenge the societal norms that harm us, even if they benefit you. Including but not limited to:

The idea that romantic and sexual attraction is the default state of being (amatonormativity)

The idea that a romantic, sexual relationship completes a person

People in marriages receiving special privileges and benefits

The idea that platonic, familial, etc. attraction are default states of being

The idea that not feeling some form of attraction must be compensated for through another form of attraction

The idea that love (not just romantic) is inherently morally good, while not feeling love is inherently a moral failing

The idea that any one form of relationship is inherently more important or deeper than any other (relationship hierarchy)

The idea that any one thing makes someone human

The idea that not having sex is shameful or infantile

The idea that having sex without romantic love is callous

Gendered divides of sexual and romantic attraction

We Need To Talk About Texas Senate Bill 20.

As if this year couldn't get any worse the Texas Senate has just passed a bill that will criminalize the possession of any material depicting a minor in “obscene” ways.

THIS WOULD POTENTIALLY MAKE OWNING/WATCHING/PLAYING ANIME OR VIDEO GAMES A FELONY

Though Senate Bill 20 is structured in a way that mainly points it at the usage of AI software to create this type of material, “cartoon or animation” are also specified. Some of the most popular anime, manga, and games of all time contain these sorts of depictions. Depending on how Texan lawmakers feel about certain series, there’s a good chance many of the most popular anime and manga series ever could be affected. Seeing as many stories center around people who are high-school age, any content that depicts characters who are underage in a way Texas law deems “obscene” would be committing a felony offense. Senate Bill 20 is intended to be rolled out as an amendment to Chapter 43 of Texas’ penal code, with the section reading as follows: “A person commits an offense if the person knowingly possesses, accesses with intent to view, or promotes obscene visual material containing a depiction that appears to be of a child younger than 18 years of age engaging in activities described by Section 43.21(a)(1)(B), regardless of whether the depiction is an image of an actual child, a cartoon or animation, or an image created using an artificial intelligence application or other computer software.” That said, the activities described by Section 43.21(a)(1)(B) are, by design, up to interpretation. Though they describe the standard acts that would be considered deplorable by most, the definition of “obscene” material ends with this line: “[Material or a performance that] taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, and scientific value”.

GUYS THIS IS BAD. And not just because they are coming after something that most of us love.

This is the beginning of a new wave of fascist "Book Banning" per se.

Right wing leaders are hiding behind the guise of "children safety" to ban ANY PIECE OF MEDIA that they don't like or agree with. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH PUBLIC/CHILDREN SAFETY.

Don't get me wrong, we DO NEED PROTECTION AND LAWS AIMED AT AI GENERATED CH*LD P*RN.

But Senate Bill 20 is written SO FUCKING VAGUELY that there are NO ACTUAL GUIDELINES that would actually lay out CLEAR AND CONCISE WORDING on what IS or ISN'T legal. It would be left up to the fuckhead right wing lawmakers here in Texas to determine what is or isn't safe which means that they would abuse THE FUCK out of it to fit their agenda.

Texans, if you are reading this CALL, EMAIL, HELL, SHOW UP AT YOUR LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES OFFICE. DO NOT LET THEM GET AWAY WITH THIS EASILY.

Let them know that this is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

If you don't live in Texas, spread the word of this. Show your friends what is about to happen because IF YOU THINK THIS WILL ONLY BE ISOLATED TO TEXAS YOU ARE DEAD FUCKING WRONG.

Like I said before: This is only the beginning of a wave of fascist media banning that is only being emboldened by the fascists that currently occupy the oval office.
