for me, so much of the appeal of heinrix's romance is how torn he is between duty and desire. he knows from the very start that no matter what he feels for the rogue trader, their relationship is doomed - as doomed as he is to death or heresy.

with the rogue trader, heinrix is happy - happier than he's ever been - and he knows it won't last. such a life was never meant for him. heinrix wants - oh, how he wants - but what he wants he cannot have, and he knows that. he's accepted it, he's resigned himself to it - but still, he wants.

on janus, when heinrix pulls the rogue trader aside to express his concern, he has to stop himself. there's more he wants to say, but he can't.

his presence in their retinue might not be only to surveil them - but that is why he's there, as an agent of the holy ordos/golden throne. heinrix may want to protect the rogue trader, to keep them safe - but that's not why he's been sent there by the inquisition. and that duty, for him, must always come before desire.

during the magnae accessio, heinrix pulls the rogue trader aside to warn them about…something, though he won't say what, exactly. he tells them only that they should steel themselves and be prepared. heinrix knows he's putting himself at risk by even saying that much. he knows there could be consequences, but to him, keeping the rogue trader safe is worth that risk.

but that's also as far as he goes. he could tell the rogue trader exactly what's coming, exactly what's going to happen and what to expect - but he doesn't. he still has his duty to the inquisition.

and then comes commorragh, and heinrix almost loses the rogue trader. and he stops holding himself back. nothing has changed, not really, but if there's going to be pain either way, he might as well have the pleasure of it, too.

the inevitable end of it all hangs over the entire dinner date. heinrix is distracted, and he tells the rogue trader it's because he knows this can't last. he just wants to enjoy what they have now, rather than dwelling on what they won't have in the future.

heinrix's romance is built around this conflict, and he's so conflicted that it nearly kills him.
