A Windy Day

 Soulmate AU where your world is in black and white before you meet and touch your soulmate.

It was supposed to be a sudden explosion, like fireworks bursting in the sky with colours dripping everywhere. That’s what they told in those novels and legends. That’s what they used to say. That single touch would spark lights brighter than the sun.

But it’s different than that.

It’s like a child learning to walk, like a flower blooming after frost in spring. It’s slow and soft; like love is supposed to be. It grows with you. It heals on those places where you didn’t know you were broken.

You look at him and suddenly everything is the same and different at the same time because you can see it— this colour— that expands your universe. You inhale a sharp breath because gods, it’s the colour of the midnight sky, the pretty butterflies, the soladite. But what hooks you is that it’s the colour of his eyes; they are the prettiest you’ve ever seen; even with the monochromes flowing in them before.

The wind cut through the mountains and laughed in this forest. He is standing in front of you and you can’t believe that this is it—the one they write about in literature and fairy tales. It’s almost hilarious because you could never believe that someone like that exists in the first place, let alone for you.

But he is there and suddenly the leaves are giggling in their coloured beauty. And you gasp because he is everywhere. He is in those trees and grasses and the lands stretched across. He is bigger than existence.

It’s a gentle, patient process. You have to be careful because it’s been a long time. You both carry bad dreams locked inside your bones because they are the only place where they will be safe; you have to know where to keep your demons, otherwise you’ll shatter, they said.

But he chuckles lightly and asks that if a person was meant to break, shouldn’t we rather be made up of glass than flesh and bones?

From inside, you reply.

He nods his head, right. But… we are much stronger than those porcelain. We crack and leave scars but hey, in the end we grow through the pain. We can heal.

The way he says, you almost want to believe that he is right. That one day you will. Both of you.

Suddenly, his hair glow a little and you can see pink.

…

You’re afraid to lose him. It’s because life had taken so much away from you already, you’re scared that he will slip away too. But at nights when he holds while you cry to sleep, the way his dark blue eyes whisper promises, you believe him.

When he tells you that you are enough, you don’t push him away.

The next day, he brings you a new cardigan because it’s almost winter and you hate cold as much as he likes it. As he puts it on you, there is a sparkle of soft light and you can see purple flashing on you.

That’s how it goes for you both. The world didn’t suddenly present you palette, didn’t drop hues like sleet on the roof. It started with a step, one colour at a time. With every word you whispered to each other, with every part you helped in putting down, you painted a picture. But you see, one has to know not to worry about what will be the final outcome, whether it will be the masterpiece that they have always desired.

One only wonders

And paints.

So here you both are, glowing in this monochrome-turning-coloured world.

Here you are painting a masterpiece.

Here you are loving.
