Growing Together
Paring: N.L x Reader Tags: Classmate romance // Sweet // School hood pining // Request: what if the reader and Neville are paired up together in herbology to take care of a plant like a baby project W/C: 811 A/N: a shorty! V Sweet <3 [masterlist] Much love, Saige
You glance at the assignment sheet in your hand and feel a sudden wave of nervous excitement. It’s Herbology class, and you’re paired with none other than Neville Longbottom for today’s task. He’s always been kind-hearted and earnest, though you’ve never really worked with him closely before. But this task… this task seems different. You and Neville are to take care of a magical plant that’s been described as “fragile as a newborn,” and you can’t help but wonder what that means.
Professor Sprout’s voice calls out, “Remember, this plant is delicate. Treat it as you would a baby—carefully, gently, with great attention.”
You glance at Neville, who’s already setting up his workstation with a focused look on his face. He’s got that quiet determination that you’ve always admired from afar. For a moment, you forget to move, watching him as he arranges the tools.
“Hey, y/n,” Neville says, looking up, his cheeks slightly pink. “Ready to tackle this thing together?”
You nod, feeling your heart flutter at the sound of your name on his lips. “Yeah, I think so. How should we start?”
Neville smiles warmly, the kind of smile that feels like sunshine breaking through clouds. “We should probably start by carefully unpacking the plant. If we’re going to keep it healthy, we need to make sure it feels safe and cared for.”
You both carefully unwrap the plant, revealing its soft, green leaves and tiny, almost imperceptible flowers. Its delicate nature almost feels like it could sense your nervousness. The plant shudders ever so slightly, and you reach out instinctively, your hand hovering over it.
Neville’s hand brushes against yours, and you both freeze. He looks at you, eyes wide and a little startled. But then he smiles softly, his eyes warm with reassurance. “It’s okay, y/n. We’ve got this.”
You breathe out, smiling back at him. “Right. We’re in this together.”
As you both begin tending to the plant, you start to notice how much care and attention Neville puts into every movement. His hands are steady, his focus unwavering. His gentleness is something you hadn’t expected but find so endearing. Watching him so dedicated to making sure the plant thrives is strangely comforting, and it makes you want to work harder, be better, for both the plant and for him.
“Do you think it likes this?” You ask, looking up at Neville as you adjust the soil.
He looks at the plant, then back at you, his eyes thoughtful. “I think it likes being taken care of. Like most things. It’s not about knowing exactly what to do, but doing your best with what you have.”
You smile, feeling a warmth spread through your chest at his words. “That’s a good way to put it.”
For the next hour, you and Neville work together, nurturing the plant as though it were the most precious thing in the world. It’s surprising how natural it feels, how easy it is to work in sync with him. You find yourself laughing over little mistakes, exchanging shy smiles when your hands brush against each other, and sharing quiet moments where you both pause to admire how well the plant is doing.
At one point, you step back to check your progress, and Neville does the same. He looks at the plant, then at you, his face soft with a mixture of pride and something else—something warmer, something unspoken.
“You’ve got a really nice way with plants,” Neville says, his voice low and sincere. “And with everything. It’s kind of magical, really.”
Your heart skips a beat at his words. You’re not sure if it’s the magic of the moment or something else entirely, but something shifts in the air between you. There’s an unspoken connection now, like the delicate bond you share with the plant.
Before you can say anything, Neville leans forward just slightly, his hand brushing against yours again as he adjusts the plant’s leaves. “I think we make a good team.”
You nod, feeling a soft blush creep onto your cheeks. “Yeah, we do.”
The moment hangs between you, full of something more than just teamwork. It’s a quiet kind of intimacy, a shared sense of accomplishment and unspoken understanding.
As class wraps up, you and Neville step back, surveying the now-healthy plant in front of you. It’s thriving, just as your partnership did. The plant may be the assignment, but somewhere between the soil and the soft sunlight, you realize that Neville Longbottom may have become something even more important to you.
“Hey, y/n,” he says again, his voice softer now, “maybe we could… do this again sometime?”
You smile, heart racing. “I’d like that, Neville. I really would.”
And as you walk away from the Herbology greenhouse, you feel a sense of warmth that has nothing to do with the sunshine outside.

Always imagined the Weasleys as in debt. Not Arthur’s fault, but his father’s, probably. Poverty can’t be an old thing about them, both Molly and Arthur have very “rich people” habits, and they are in fact still on the sacred 28 list, which I’m sorry, like it should mean something even if JKR retconned it later as some sort of unofficial thing.
So my headcanon is this: the Weasleys were your regular pure blood family, aristocrats essentially. Maybe not as rich as Malfoys or Potters, but still very well-to-do, and then lost it all very recently. That’s why we are presented with the world where there are supposed to be many many weasleys, but in fact there are only Arthur’s branch. His brother Billius was a raging alcoholic, too. The twins said he died from delirium from drinking basically.
So here goes: the sacred 28 form the wizard House of Lords, that’s why Arthur is able to push for some laws (and I think that given that the laws thing and the sacred 28/blood purity are explored in the same book, that’s probably what she intended), because he has the seat in the wizarding House of Lords. He and Lucius knew each other well and were friendly/grew up around each other before the Weasleys went bankrupt and Arthur chose to side with Dumbledore in the war. That’s why Lucius is going around talking to his son about Arthur, while sounding very bitter. Explains the strange money flow and all of the connections and favors, too.
What a fantastic theory. I absolutely love this. You can absolutely make the case that the Weasleys and/or Prewetts were aristocratic families who fell from grace *recently.*
Like we have:
~ Molly's squib second cousin the accountant who they "never talk about." Yeah I BET. It sounds like this cousin just left the wizard world completely. Are you even allowed to do that?
~ Uncle Bilius, Ron's namesake. The alcoholic who officially died after seeing a grim... but it's kinda vauge if grim even exist, so we're going to chalk that one up under "died under mysterious circumstances."
~ Aunt Muriel, who has money... but she's not helping out Molly and Arthur, even though she's "fond of Bill" so does she really? She's the one with the goblin-made moonstone tiara, which kinda sounds like (the last?) family heirloom.
~ Molly's brothers Fabian and Gideon who died unexpectedly young, and without heirs. Does this mean that the Prewett money went to another family/branch of the family? Was Molly out of the running because she technically wasn't a Prewett at the time, and the money follows the name? Also, she'd already had most of her large family before they died, so maybe she was counting on an income that dried up.
(do they have death duties / inheritance tax in the wizarding world? they MIGHT.)
Any one of the above relatives might have absolutely cost the family a LOT of money, and left Arthur and Molly playing catch-up.
