What makes our game special?

Based on our market research, Defox is unique, as it combines the following aspects:

Tamagotchi concept

Live balance apps

Openworld games and

Digital Detox apps

You get a response to your behaviour, as the condition of the fox and its environment represents your progress of the detox. So your fox is kind a Tamagotchi, which you have to take care. So your fox will feel better, when you reduce your Social Media consumption.

Another benefit of Defox is, that you can spend time in an openworld and find so called Soulfood games. Those games are for live balance.

In most digital detox apps you can adjust your personal goals. In Defox your goals will be refleced by levels.

For sure we wanted to know, how other games are designed... so we started to have a look on other games.

Forestapp

This app helps people to stay focused and do not get districted by their phone

Everytime you want to focus, you plant a tree in the app

The tree will grow, as long as you stay in the app

When you leave the app, the tree will be killed

 After some time you will create a forest and every single tree represents your focused time

Pou

Is a game similar to Tamagotchi, where you take care of a simulated creature

You can play games with your Pou, feed it, groom it and so on

The better you take care of your Pou the better his condition will be

Set goals for phone usage and unlocks, track progress against these goals over time

Understand what ‘type’ of phone user you are - be it boredom battler, social sticky-mitt, rabbit hole wanderer or busy bee

Cons: You have to pay for features, you have no tutorial and the app only tracks your time.

Bushy Tail

Bushy Tail is a narrative adventure game which follows the story of ‘Little Fox’, a three-legged fox which has lost its parent, and must explore a strange and ever-changing world as to try and track them down.The whole game has a wonderful, storybook style to it, sketchy lines shade the objects of the world.

Elevator Pitch

Our game focuses on reducing the time on Social Media. 

The environment and the fox in the game will be affected by the consumption of Social Media and some Soulfood Games offer an alternative for those who need a deflection or for those who want to overcome their addiction.

European Youth Award

Last week on Thursday we watched the Winners Presentations of the EYA. We got an impression how presentations in the style of Pecha Kucha are made. In fact it taught us, that we have to keep our final presentation of game design short, as it will also be in the style of Pecha Kucha. It will be hard to describe the whole game concept in such a short amount of time. We think, that a lot of the EYA presentations were too unprecise and did not explain their inventions or topics very well.

Mira - The Game Producer/Manager 

It will be difficult to maintain the overview about every task. Also it can be a problem to put together the different ideas of the game and to get on the point quickly.

Kathi - The Game Artist/Modeler 

Finding the right style for the game will be challenging. It is important to maintain the style and the character in every part oft he game.

Judith - The Game Programmer/Designer 

Finding the right design, that reflects the concept of our game, will be a hard task. Futhermore it will be a long process to think about the possiblities, how our game could come to reality.

Heli - The Game Analyst/Tester 

We should never loose the needs of our target group. The social detox is our main aspect and also our goal, that we want to achieve with our game.

1st game ideas

Ahoi!

So we had a group meeting and decided to create our own game with the working title „DeFox“.

The title is a combination of the words „Detox“ and „Fox“.

The game should concentrate on Social Media Detox. Therefore you can play it on your mobile phone. The game is animated and it‘s a role play, single player, survival, action and adventure game.

Generally, the game should be there for everybody who wants to reduce the consumption of social media, to document this and harvest his laurels within the game. We think that these people are mostly 20 years and over.

Game City ‘19

Last week we visited the Game City in Vienna and played a lot of games: retro games as well as VR games. In general, it was a very funny experience because we got to see so many cosplays and an unbelievable amount of games.

Our favorite one was Concrete Genie, produced by Pixelopus (producer of Entwinded, 2014). The game is available in different languages and you can play it on PS4 and PS VR.

It’s an Action and Adventure - single player game that all people from 12 and above can play. The focus is on decision making, so you have to solve problems.

Even the ones who rarely or never play games had an easy start as there was an introduction-video into the topic.

The protagonist is Ash, a teenager. He is living in a dark place and bullies stole his notebook. Ash is trying to get his notebook back. With a brush he is able to bring his creations to life. The goal of the game is, to bring life back to his hometown with his drawings.

You can run through the town and find creatures, which you can bring to life with the brush. These creatures tell you challenges, which you have to solve (e.g. paint a wall until every light starts to shine). You are also able to solve puzzles with your artwork.

There are not really rules in the game. The player can run, jump and brush. You can always look up your progress in a map.

You can save and restart the game from any point and the gaming objectives can be achieved in small periods of time.

The game can teach students to stand up against bullies. You get the feeling of making the world to a better place, while playing the game. You learn to see the world with other eyes. And you realize that not even the darkest places have to be bad.

In a nutshell:

The game has beautiful graphics.

The animations are cute.

The game seems 3- dimensional, also on the PS4-Pro.

The game is joyful to play, but after some time it’s starting to get boring.

At the very beginning of this blog we’d like to write a little bit about ourselves. We’re WEMBOG, a team of 4 motivated people studying information-design @ fh joanneum in Graz. This semester we’re going to do some game design and so we decided to take you with us on our journey. Enjoy ;]

Judith - The Game Grinch

Hello! Since my childhood I haven´t been the biggest fan of playing analoge games. Only some games like Dixit or Activity have caught my attention. In terms of digital games I have already tried some, but never any game fascinated me. Now it is the time for me to make friends with playing games and create a game, that I would love to play.

Mira - Miss “only loves games with beautiful graphics“

As a child I loved to play all kind of games especially ‘Super Mario’, maybe because it was forbidden by my parents to play them too long. But as I grew older, the different game-hype didn't attract me anymore and every game-evening became a horror for me. Now the games and I start to be friends again. I started to find the games I really enjoy and that’s also the kind of games I want to create.

Heli - the upcoming streamer

Hi, i’m Heli and tbh I’m not a gamer at all. Sometimes I like to play games I used to play as a child, such as Tony Hawk on PS1. As well, I like to play games on my phone as a pastime cause winning is amazing.

Katy - I just came for the fluff

Hi and servus, my name’s Katy. I love to play video games, especially on consoles. My favourite one is the Nintendo switch and my preferred game is Pokémon let’s go, the evoli edition of course :).
