Really really potent childhood memory, of a quality I'm absolutely not going to be able to communicate to you in this post, of the font size being slightly smaller on the description of power balloons in the Super Mario World instruction booklet. Obviously the actual reason it's smaller is because there's more text and it wouldn't fit in the box otherwise, but that's not the kind of explanation you think of when you're five, and I instinctively read it as whispering, or speaking softly as you might to a child who's drifting off to sleep. The contrast between what struck me as the dreamlike body horror in "Mario's body will swell up" vs the carefree gentleness suggested by "drift through the sky" spoken in the soft cooing voice my inner ear was providing gave the text a deeply uncanny, unsettling feel, like a nightmare that hasn't quite realized it's a nightmare yet. It didn't help that Mario's balloon form is not illustrated anywhere in the manual, and the power-up doesn't appear until fairly late in the game (late enough that I was too bad-at-games to get that far for a long time), so I only had these words and my own imagination to try to understand what the "swelling up and then drifting away" might actually look like. This little snippet of text from the manual has stuck with me more profoundly than probably any of the actual content of the game ever did.

Schlott has taken old pay phones, modified them to make free calls, and set them up in three different towns across the county. He buys the phones secondhand from sites like eBay and Craigslist and restores them in his home workshop. With just an internet connection, these phones can make calls anywhere in the U.S. or Canada — no coins required. And Schlott covers all the operating costs himself.
When's the last time you saw a working payphone?
More of this, please.

hmmmmm…. the book people want me to do a once-per-month ad thing for the book, at least until October, and I’m trying to think of something not obnoxious. maybe more commissioned art in October (but this time of elf yuri) (definitely not just because I want to see elf yuri) (my arm is being bent here I have to commission the elf yuri)
so then I just need to think of something fun for September 🤔

For all those who message me saying, ''The past has passed,'' and we must turn the page; it's not the case when you're dealing with a ravenous beast devoid of any humanity.

THE LOG LADY INTRODUCTIONS [1/30]
Welcome to Twin Peaks. My name is Margaret Lanterman. I live in Twin Peaks. I am known as the Log Lady. There is a story behind that. There are many stories in Twin Peaks. Some of them are sad, some funny. Some of them are stories of madness, of violence. Some are ordinary. Yet they all have about them a sense of mystery – the mystery of life. Sometimes, the mystery of death. The mystery of the woods. The woods surrounding Twin Peaks. To introduce this story, let me just say it encompasses the all – it is beyond the "fire", though few would know that meaning. It is a story of many, but begins with one – and I knew her. The one leading to the many is Laura Palmer. Laura is the one.

Yesterday a kid said to me "excuse me? Your hair looks like beautiful anime hair" which is already amazing and then she said "watch me on your camera when I go down the slide I'm going to do the Peter Griffin death pose when I come out" and she sure did.

It seems like the older I get, the more irrationally angry casual censorship makes me. And it isn't just the "unalive" "grape" alleged filter-dodging vernacular, but the way normal words will be peppered with asterisks, or screenshots will have words like "gay" "hell" "fuck" etc either partially or entirely blurred. Who is this helping? What is the purpose of it, except to reinforce shame and elevate a flimsy perception of purity and safety, however those things manifest. It's so tiresome and I'm sick of it.

One of the most important things I’ve learned as a Real Adult™ is the importance of a job half done.
Today I did a load of dishes, wiped off my stove, and swept the kitchen floor. Did I do the best job, or finish every dish? No! My stove still has that caked on caramel that I need to bust out an SOS pad to take care of, one of our big pots is still sitting in the sink, and somehow a kitty kibble unearthed itself while I was wiping down the stove (?? how??).. but the kitchen looks a LOT better. It’s once again an inhabitable, usable space.
Parents, bosses, teachers, even my own self, harp upon absolute perfect completion of a task as the be all and end all of a job well done, but god damn, my kitchen isn’t terrible because I took the time to improve it. Little steps, especially when you’re struggling, are important. They mean a LOT. They are a sign that you won, if only in that brief moment, and they make getting all the other stuff done so much easier later on down the road.
