I wanted to translate the Animedia Magazine 2018 July Issue’s Gundam W portion like ↑ with the translation surrounding the picture with arrows, but I don’t know how to. Please be satisfied with ↓. For those that want to read the original text (that I photographed), go here.

　The next legendary anime to be introduced is the following;『New Mobile Report Gundam W』. This work is one of the many『Gundam』series, and from April 1995 to March 1996 the TV series aired. In 1997 the 3 episodes OVA 『New Mobile Report Gundam W Endless Waltz』continuation was created, and in 1998 the re-edited『Special Edition』version of that was released theatrically. Even now after 20 years have passed its popularity has not waned, rerunning since February 2018 on TOKYO MX. Gathering interest even from people exposed to this work for the first time, there has been a resurgence in popularity.

　One point that needs a special mention with this work is that, it is the forerunner of a『Gundam』series that won fanatical female fans. Though 『Gundam』series are now supported by many demographics regardless of gender,『Gundam』fans before this work were mainly children and men, who the related merchandise targeted. The biggest factor behind how this work managed to capture the hearts of women, in this situation, was that the 5 main characters were prominent. Not only were the 5 main characters beautiful boys, they had strong personalities that were unable to be described in one word. Some acted calm, cool, and collected to fulfill their missions, while others took flabbergasting actions that were mind boggling. The interactions between them, and the words and deeds that exceeded the viewers’ imaginations, continued to charm fans. Especially Heero・Yuy for informing the heroine「I’ll kill you」 in episode 1, and also by blowing up his beloved mobile suit Wing Gundam, having a strong impression not seen elsewhere, with his loony¹ actions and a number of out-there¹ famous quotes, he had a presence that could only be described as peerless. The threatened gazes directed by the 5 boys who are by no means absolutely perfect, continue to capture the hearts of fans and refuses to let go even to this day.

——What kind of work is『New Mobile Report Gundam Wing』, to you, Mr. Midorikawa? Furthermore, if you had to choose one thing that made you happy, from your memories during the first airings, what would it be?

　My dream since I was a child was playing the main character in a serious robot work like『Mobile Suit Gundam』, so my dream came true. That made me happy, as you can imagine. Of course, plastic models of Wing Gundam that Heero rides on went on sale, so as person who was crazy about Gunpla² when I was a child, those were really happy days ♪

²Gundam plastic model = Gunpla

——With his unpredictable words and deeds and such, Heero・Yuy was a character with many sensational episodes. If there was anything that you struggled with while playing him, please do tell.

　Heero’s silent, so I think that having to impress the character on the audience within the limited few lines is difficult. However, I gained quite a lot of experience with silent characters with the role of Kaede Rukawa from『SLAM DUNK』(aired 1993～1996), so I managed to not struggle that much（^^;;

——This year marks the 20th year since the release of『New Mobile Report Gundam W Endless Waltz Special Edition』. What do you think about the fact that it’s still loved by many fans, even after over 20 years have passed?

　Maybe it’s  the fact that interesting things are interesting, no matter how many years pass? I mean it is full of holes that can be poked fun at, even though it’s by no means a gag anime (laughter). Apparently, there are also tenacious fans in America even to this day, not only limited  to Japan, so I think it’s a real amazing piece of work.

——If you were to give a message toward the following five of Heero, Duo, Trowa, Quatre, and Wufei, right now, what would the contents of the message be?

　I am truly happy, that I was able to meet you all. There is also a work that paints yourselves after the end, so if a chance presents itself, I’d love to breathe life into your grown selves. Well, I think that I’ll be indebted to all of you through games or whatnot, from now on too, so I look forward to working with you all then（^₋^）

37(Everyone) Time to Shine Famous Scene

　Episode 1 was full of iconic scenes that symbolized the person known as Heero. From trying to shoot down a civilian shuttle that was interfering with accomplishing his mission during his descent to Earth, to hijacking an ambulance that rushed over due to Relena`s report, who found him injured, it was a succession of barbarity. Moreover, he whispers「I’ll kill you」in her ear after ripping a birthday party invitation that she sent, going undercover as a transfer student at her school, all just due to the reason that「his face was seen by Relena」.

As always, Duo is exasperated, and it’s up for him and Quatre to keep the show running smoothly. Awkwardness between the pilots still remain, but the two do their best. I was actually really surprised at the awkward pauses that the script writers put in (good characterization). You can see that they’re not completely buddy-buddy with each other.

I cringed in second hand embarrassment the most when translating Duo’s lines, and had the most difficulty with Trowa’s. Since Trowa’s distinctive lack of unity and coherence in his dialogue makes his messages sound like poems, commenters on Nico Nico have said that he sounds like Snufkin from Moomin.

Wufei, as always, is treated as a joke. Even the other pilots don’t take him seriously. In the other cassette this applies to Heero too (teased relentlessly).

Heero appears to be more of a “boy who didn’t manage to kill adolescence completely”, with all the embarrassment and standoffishness of a normal teenager.

Duo’s womanizing tendencies come out in the open. This tells you a lot about how he was characterized by the creators. Furthermore, like Quatre points out, Duo is implied to be the type that isn’t good at holding down steady, long term relationships that need commitment. Showering their lover with superficial praises and flirting is what he can do, but when push comes to shove he can’t be there emotionally for his lover (possibly clamming up and avoiding the issue). The consequences of this negative characteristic of not being held down by anyone, and his tendency of falling for girls too easily is explored in Frozen Teardrop.

Many Nico Nico users also saw the shadows of what would lead to Frozen Teardrop Quatre in this and the other cassette. Even though Quatre is mostly polite and sociable in these, you can see here and there that he intentionally takes a dig at the other members around him, then uses his personality to deflect any criticism (like “Oh silly, what are you talking about?”). He’s either feigning ignorance, or he really doesn’t realize that he’s naturally acrimonious (maybe due nobody ever calling him out on it, with his coddled upbringing). Also, his constant “Oh, [character name]��� can be interpreted as condescending. Maybe he does look down on them unconsciously.

Chang Wufei

Evade stat is pitiful enough to doubt if he’s even trying. But on the flipside he’s learned “Iron Wall” so use him effectively. Combine with “Provoke” and he just might be the perfect pilot you’re looking for to use as bait. His Melee stat is high, as expected.

Has high Manuevering/Skill and Melee stats. Alas, he can’t be depended on during the second half of the game. Including him on the team is pretty iffy.

Why did I translate this? Personally, I found this incredibly funny. The spot on imitation of Zechs’ voice, the GW references, the content, and all the portmanteau that was sadly lost in translation. Why was Zechs kept alive?

Q. Although presumed to be dead in the main TV series, it was revealed in EW that Zechs was alive all along. The question is, why exactly was he kept alive by the creators? Was it intended all along, just to include him in EW?

A. Zechs was actually really killed off in both the main TV series and the TV novelization (a fact that sets these two off from all other Gundam W versions). EW was requested (to be made) immediately after GW finished. Although the creators hadn’t particularly prepared a scenario for EW, the flow of their conversation naturally drifted toward a decision to make Wufei the main character since he was the only one that had an incomplete (unsatisfying, ambiguous) ending. So, nothing was intended all along.

Furthermore, although FT is known to be controversial between fans, EW is also just as controversial. Opinions are divided on EW’s backstories and “facts” that were added on later. For example, disagreements on how vastly characterization changes in the TV and EW, leading many fans to believe that the TV and EW characters are two different people (thus concluding that the TV and EW are two different series). Another point is that the plot doesn’t unfold the same way in the TV and EW. For example, in the TV Doctor J finds Heero where his parent was killed by the Earth Sphere Federation, but in EW Heero was introduced by his father to Doctor J (FT attempted to reconcile these two).

Possibly based on this fact, he once adopted the code name “Red One” in  the series.

I see that you're interested in Gundam Wing. I thought this might brighten your day: Besides Frozen Teardrop, Episode Zero, Blind Target, Glory of Losers, etc. there also exists (untranslated) novelized versions of the main TV series and Endless Waltz! Due to the main TV series, OVA, books, and manga all contradicting each other, the general consensus of the Japanese GW fandom is that every single piece exists in its own separate alternate universe. So no continuity at all between even the main TV series and EW—separate universes (this is also used to explain why the Gundams are different in the TV series and EW; in the EW-verse they were piloting the EW gundams all along). Feel free to post this as your own!

Hmmm... (By the way, I finally realized that you were the person who originally started this topic)

English fanfiction has more flawed characterization. Not in a negative sense, but in that they make the characters more complex, more flawed, darker and grittier. As in negative character growth? I’ve yet to read Japanese fanfiction that has plunged me into depression like ElleSmith’s and others. Many English fanfiction exist that try to portray them in a realistic fashion, with realistic personalities, etc. They also build and form their own world (theorizing about the economy, ethnicity, etc) in the fanfiction.

Even in Japanese fanfiction with dark themes, I would say that it’s not done just for the sake of being dark, or for educating, or for constructing a sense of realism. It’s done to serve as prop for romance or porn. There is no overly detailed explanation of how they came to be that way, nor do they ever (excessively?) wallow in angst.

For example, Heero is obsessive. Why? Never explained. It’s just a prop for him to keep Relena captive in a one-sided relationship. 

Duo has PTSD. Explained, reasonably. But Duo himself never appears in the fanfiction itself, and his tragic sorry state is just stated in passing as a prop for Hilde and Duo Ⅱ to strengthen their bond with each other.

It’s also due to the fact that normal Japanese fanfiction is normally just the length of a short drabble, and any long fanfiction that exist are ones that are never published on the internet and sold as doujinshi.

About GW fic characterisations written by non-Japanese fans vs the characters as they are in the Japanese version. I can’t comment on GW fics of other languages, as I have only read English ones. But as a non-Japanese speaker who cannot decipher more than a few Japanese words or phrases, when I watch the show, all I’ve got to go on to interpret a character is their body language or the dub/subtitles, which obviously lose the nuances of the original in translation. I am also aware there are fan subs around but have not watched one, so can’t say how these might differ from the bog-standard subtitles .

SO out of interest, if you are a Japanese fan or someone who can read/speak Japanese (I’m not sure how many would see this post anyway?), what are the most notable differences you have come across when watching characters in the actual series and reading non-Japanese fanfic?

Are there often portrayals, for example, from English speaking fans, that wouldn’t have necessarily come through if they could have understood Japanese and heard the authentic character voices? Or do you notice the opposite; you want to portray a character in the more ‘original’ sense and this is not appreciated or doesn’t come across/seems OOC when you read others’ fanfiction because most of the non-Japanese fandom relies on subtitles?

Granted, even fans who speak the same language will not necessarily interpret a character or their motivations in the same way (for example, the English speaking fandom doesn’t all write any one character the same) but I was wondering if there are general patterns?

Unless the director or character designer is ridiculously obsessed with their work, they leave all the anime magazine art to the line art drawers to do.

So, the magazines will vaguely insist for a “Gundam group shot”, or “Everyone in swimwear since it’s summer”, or “Something Christmas-y”, but since the main staff is so busy producing the actual show they can’t care less about clothing or composition. If the character designer is in charge of the magazine art it’s all fine and dandy, but most of the time they just throw all that work at newbies with a flimsy excuse, like “This is also an important learning experience, now get at it!”

As a result the magazine art is a mess due to the yet little formal training they all have, and also due to drawing them in a state of excitement at breaks during work.

So this art passes through many hands, and eventually they become the sources for legendary memes. Scary, eh? lol

I’ve read that the surrealism stems from the fact that during the 80s and 90s Animage and Animedia (two of the “Big Three” anime magazines, third one being NewType) had a habit of just copy pasting clothes directly from fashion magazines onto characters.
