if anyone's writing stories set in the late 1800s or early 1900s (like, 1880-1910), I set up a side blog @vetsen to easily store all my own research into the era!
It's mostly random tidbits of info (aka no deep dives encompassing massive subjects from beginning to the end), just whatever my own stories require. But BECAUSE the information will be of the more random sort, it may be useful to other writers too (or people just generally interested in history), and that's why I'm sharing the blog here :)
Also note that my focus is on the 1890s. The world changed a lot very quickly around this time, so some of the info I dig up might not apply to the other decades.

looking for betareaders (a bit in advance)
So!!! I'm about to wrap up my current WIP, book 1 of a cyberpunk-fantasy duology. I'll still need 2-3 months to make it ready for betareading, but I wanted to poke the crowds a little bit and see if there would be any interest.
Approximate word count: 140-150k words
Genre: fantasy, cyberpunk, action-adventure
Demographic: adult in regards to protagonists and themes and events, but with the adventurous heart of YA (aka not dry)
Vibes: Fast-paced, colorful, absurd (in the style of Trigun for all anime fans), high-stakes. Big emotional arc, emphasis on characters. Trauma, violence, and becoming a menace to a capitalist society. Also, QUEER.
Content warnings: Violence, violence towards minors, suicidal ideation, dehumanization (non-sexual), medicinal drug use (opioids)
An attempt at a blurb:
Kade, a former prodigy, has gotten used to his shitty life as a debt-slave to the greedy megacorporation called Vashra. With a sick mother and a young sister to take care of, he's got no other option but to suck it up and let his old dreams of rebellions, science, and magic die. He's an adult now, after all, and adults hold no hope of killing the unkillable.
Sadly, Dew never got the memo.
That man of secrets, stupid jokes, and oddly powerful magic crashes into Kade's life in a hail of bullets and blood. Sunmeadow City's beloved mayor is about to kill magic with a divine staff only Dew can use, and for some reason, Kade is just what Dew needs to stop her.
Fishnet nomads, time magic, and megalopolises filled with ghouls are only the beginning to the chaos. In the midst of blasting My Magical Romance and flipping off the skies, Kade has to ask himself if dragons can be slain after all.
Although, that is assuming the man he chose to go with can even be trusted.
HERE you can find the prologue as well as chapters one and two. Note that they will undergo more editing before it's ready to be betaread.
Also, here's the (very rough and fully unfinished) cover sketch and also a random art piece of the two protagonists

Anyway, I'd like to emphasize again this isn't fully done yet! I'll need about 2-3 months more. I'll be posting again closer to the date, but if this already interests you, shoot me a message (or reply to this post or whatever else) and I can get in touch when the Time Is Right to see if you're still interested then. :)

caretaker who would do anything to ensure whumpee’s safety, including taking their place. they would willingly subject themself to whumper’s tortures — even knowing how much agony they’ll be in, even knowing they’ll never escape, even knowing they’ll likely never see whumpee again — for just the smallest chance that whumpee might be safe as a result.

YOU DON'T KNOW THE GRIP THESE BOOKS HAD ON ME LIKE TEN-ish YEARS AGO
seriously. Book 1 is whump gold. Overall the trilogy was great as well (although keep in mind I read it back when I was like 16-17 and I only have my feelings from back then to go off of) to the point I also read Dark Matter by the same author, which was also a great book, even if less whumpy.
Anyway I did not expect to see Pines mentioned when I opened the app just now but I'm so happy it was. I need to reread the book
I'm half way through reading Pines by Blake Crouch and I am not exaggerating in the slightest when I say that the whump started at line 1, paragraph 1, page 1, and hasn't let up even for a moment.

a whumpee who can’t move, it hurts too badly, and they just lie there moaning while caretaker tries desperately to comfort them.
bonus points if whumpee’s noises of pain are so weak, barely audible… leading caretaker to worry even more.
bonus bonus points if whumpee is using whatever molecule of strength they have left to feebly grasp caretaker’s sleeve / wrist / fingers.

OH MY GOD ?????????? all you were saying about being bad at art, just WHY, this is absolutely gorgeous???? Like the lighting, the blur of Cidi's hand, the eyes, all the colors and the the details, I can't stop zooming in just to appreciate it more. The way you draw hair??????? Stoppppp
Also I can't deal with these in general 😭😭 the scenes you chose. Oh, man. You just made them so much prettier than my words ever could. I might be sobbing a little. Also screaming. A lot. Cidi 😭 the way you drew her 😭😭 the joy you captured on her face in the fleeting freedom photo vs Lu Guang 😭 I cannot put into words what I'm feeling right now oh my god you're making me tear up
Thank you for bringing this amazing art into the world. I hope you don't mind me saving these in my phone so I can look at them and cry more whenever the need arises- just let me tell you, I will CHERISH these FOREVER 😭😭😭

This is a love letter to "If i could have saved you", one of my favorite Link Click Fanfics. I cannot recommend it enough. Thank you author for bringing this fic into the world. @whumpprompts

It’s now free on Amazon too! At least the .com kindle store (idk what’s up, it still shows a price on the co.uk store. I’ll have to find out what that’s about).
Anyway, rejoice knowing the evil smiley will not make a cent off this ;)
Amazon.com link here
(ETA: ye I fucked up with the price match request, lmao. What a fool I was for thinking I just need to link the book once and they’d match for all the countries. Nope, had to give every single region’s link separately. I’ve done that now, so hopefully in a few days it’ll be free everywhere.)
ETA2: I cannot get it free anywhere but the .com version, it turns out :))) so if you use amazon, get it on the .com link to pay nothing.
my book is now FREE and will probably stay that way forever
this is because the world is a mess (and lowkey because my grampa implied I’ll start liking capitalism if I ever get rich off my writing, and I am full of Spite)
anyway!! if you want a big book full of stuff like…
aroace and other queer rep
so much blood and action
a talking stone
a looming apocalypse
a morally gray protag with so much Trauma and Anger
some monster-creatures
that sweet sweet found family
a slow-burn QPR
no spice
…here’s the thing for you.
Content warnings include child abuse, severe homophobia, religious trauma, suicidal ideation.
it is NOT yet free on Amazon. I have the price match request pending, but it might take time. I’ll reblog with its link once I get it free as well.
Barnes & Noble
Kobo, Apple Books, Smashmouth, etc.

Hello i'm a normal person here's some stuff i drew to illustrate different traits different "person getting controlled" tropes can have
#i love this so much#also fun because the villain-thing-guy in my trilogy can control others#and it’s just#ahh such a good trope#forever gonna be a fan of the ending of the first book#where two characters get controlled separately#and it leads to PAIN

“Get up.”
A boot on their back, their face buried in the concrete. Arms shaking with strain, but they can’t manage to lift themselves up.
The fight is lost and they’ve been kicked to the ground. The taste of blood is in their mouth and it coats their teeth with metal. Their enemy laughs over them, telling them to stand. Pick up their weapon. “I’m not finished with you yet.”
They’re shaking with exhaustion, vision blurry. Escape is nearly theirs. It’s so close— yet so far away. They collapse near the exit, one hand still outstretched. They can’t hear the footsteps, but they can feel the steel-toed boot in their side. “You thought you could leave without saying goodbye?”
A hand in their hair, forcing their head up. A hissed threat of what will happen if they don’t stand.
Brought before a powerful ruler, they’re kicked to the ground. But the ruler waves the guards aside and tells the prisoner to get up. If only there wasn’t a cold smile lining the words.
They’ve been running for so long, their legs are numb. When they collapse, it’s out of sheer exhaustion. Colours explode behind their eyes as they’re hauled to their feet and shoved forward. They can’t stop unless Whumper says so.
In a gladiator ring, the only mercy they can receive is when their weapon is kicked back across the sand after it’s been dropped, their enemy inclining their head ever so slightly. One more round. One more chance. But first. Stand.
They drop to their knees to beg. For mercy. For death. For anything else but this. “Don’t make me hurt them—I can’t!” Whumper backhanding them. “Get off the ground and do as I say! You don’t get a choice.”

tag what you love about them!
#I LOVE whumpees who are tough on the outside but terrified on the inside#ahem cloud strife#ahem all my protagonists#the kind who are snarky when the whumper approaches but only because they’re hiding the way their voice shivers#and after it’s over and they’re safe they cry against the caretaker#gimme the whole scale#also when you break them altogether to the point they can no longer do anything but cry and beg for the whumper to stop#:’)

In the vein of whump awakenings, I'm curious. If you remember, reblog/comment on this post: who was your first whumpee?
#lmao it’s a tie between Hay Lin from witch and Leonardo from tmnt#i don’t remember the specific ages#though I might have been slightly younger with leonardo#because I know I was about 5-6 years old when I was in this at-home preschool thing#looked after by this young woman#and I remember she once let me stay up rather than take a nap and that I spent that nap time watching tmnt#while my little brother slept#it also matches because it’s the 2003 version I watched and I turned 5 in 2003#so leonardo probably#i also hve a leonardo tattoo for how much I loved him#still do#nothing has changed in 20 years

God, I love it when the whumpee falls...
It's the space between the ground and them, the seconds and the eternity it takes for them to fall.
What falls with them? Their pride, resistance, dignity?
What’s left by the time they hit the ground?
Pistolwhipped, Backhanded. Pain splits lips and they fall. Blood paints the ground before they hit it.
A shove from behind. Standing- kneeling- crumpled on the ground.
Maybe it's slow, careful. Put your hands up, kneel. "Slower!" Don’t slip, don’t make this your last move.
A bullet. Blood sprays and they crumple, hitting the ground, blood dripping down.
So easy to go down, can you get back up again?
Or a faint, the world spiralling black, "I think I’m gonna-". A soft landing's soft, a gentle crumple. Hands rush to steady them.
Maybe they fall hard. Something cracks. A boot slams into their ribs. (Kick your whumpee while they're down) That’s gonna leave a mark.
Go down (strike one)
Get back up (they’re depending on you),
Go down (you’re not going to win this)
Get back up.
Go down.
Stay down.
