I fully believe Mr. Faust is the most disturbing part of malevolent. By a long shot.
It鈥檚 not just the idea of cannibalism or murder or Arthur鈥檚 barbarity caused by tkiy that makes it so disturbing. It鈥檚 John that makes it so disturbing. It鈥檚 Arthur鈥檚 ability to see the death of corpses he touches. The fact that every single time Arthur touched Faust to take a bite of him, John had to watch his death over and over just so Arthur could eat. A constant reminder that the worst, most powerful parts of John caused this, and that in a way, Arthur鈥檚 violence was his fault. It鈥檚 like the king is telling John that he can鈥檛 escape what he comes from, his true nature.
And whenever Arthur does his corpse touching ability, it sounds like it hurts John by the way he talks. So what was he doing while Arthur ate Faust? Was he silent? Was he begging Arthur to stop? Stopping means starvation. This is why Faust is the ultimate punishment to me because it effectively dehumanizes Arthur and destroys John鈥檚 self image and faith in his friend, which are key parts of their individual characters.

I feel like theres a symbolism that means something in Malevolent i wish so so bad i could tell more people about but theres not a lot to say or tell what it really culminates into meaning Arthur absorbed part of lilith, hes carrying part of her just like he does faroe with his lighter Arthur lights a fire that survives the rain but lilith stamps it out Kayne says to arthur "you let your daughter die" with such anger it sounds like he also blames arthur yet he actively killed lilith in a manner that leads me to wonder if hes upset arthurs daughter still loved him yet Kaynes resents him Kayne asks Arthur if he was a premie in the early 1900s care for premature infants is not what it is today. They were considered inferior and often didn't survive. Kayne named himself after caine who kills his brother. His name is intentional. Lilith brings about the death of infants. Did Arthurs parents turn to worship lilith because they gave birth to a child who they feared would die? This is almost a reversal of Larson who sacrificed his daughter. And the price paid for it didnt have to be right away as Evrards father died later on as well. Is this part of why Lilith spared Arthur all those years ago? this somewhat connects to Arthur surviving his injury from Kellin because a nurse "lily" looked after him while in a coma. Foreshadowing? it means stuff im certain it does but what?? idk pattern recognition brain can grab pieces but as for how it fits together good question. Im so normal about the podcast if you couldnt tell

I don't think anyone "hurt" Kayne.
I think Kayne is his own problem and he is completely unwilling to look within at any point to realize that.
In a story that is so firmly about identity, about reframing oneself, about rediscovering the world with literally new eyes and finding value where you once could see nothing, Kayne is impatient and destructive and dismissive and has no interest in the hopes and dreams and concerns of others beyond a gag.
He wants "pure joy" because the rest of this reality is garbage, boring, stupid. It has rocks and dirt and air and all of that is a waste of time when you could just have the good stuff. He doesn't want to find beauty; he wants there to be nothing but beauty. He doesn't want to find value: everything has to be valuable.
Which is why nothing is beautiful to him and nothing is valuable to him, not even his own daughter. He wasn't rooting for Arthur because he's seen the others eventually fall: he was waiting for him to fail to prove he was just like them and not worth his time, which is why he ripped him apart in the end.
He is the soul of cynicism, the death of wonder, the great and destructive selfishness that ruins all in pursuit of 'perfection' and complete lack of appreciation, and for John who's come to love the world around him and for Arthur who's fought so hard to exist in that world...
Let's just say 'foil' doesn't even begin to cover it.
Which is not to say he's actually having a good time. He's not. It is frustrating. But it's a frustrating that will have no end by his own hand because he's trying to fix it exactly the wrong way.

What if how we the audience are able to hear both John and Arthur is that we are listening to whats going on with them alongside Kayne.
When we first meet Kayne we are told by him the hes watched Arthurs life, whos to say he isnt still watching when we meet him?
Id been toying with this idea since halfway through season three but it was the episode when we hear the world from the Butchers pov that really got me thinking about it. If the formatting for Malevolent was, as i had suspected before that episode, that we were listening in somehow due to a connection made between us and Arthur when he opened the book the change to the Butchers pov wouldnt have been possible. Also if the connection to us as listeners happened when the book was opened we would not have been able to hear the initial radio static and You Call it Madness at the beginning of the first episode.
If Kayne can hitch a ride listening along with Arthur and John why couldnt he join the Butcher and watch Jarthur get hunted. It would make sense for Kayne to randomly decide that he was enjoying the show so much that he wanted to change the perspective a little. It also has a bit of proof in the line about the Butchers music, since we in that episode can hear it and if we were listening alongside Kayne so could he. While it makes sense that Kayne is just magically able to hear Collinis鈥檚 music due to being all powerful i think its still more fun and fleshes it out more if hes heard it first hand before meeting him at the order.
When season five happened i kinda gave up on this theory since Kayne wasnt able to see where the blackstone is, but with the reveal in part 52 about how he was listening in through Yorick it also makes sense.
While Kayne couldnt watch his favourite show through Arthur and John he could still use someone close to them to keep tabs on them and if we the audience are listening to whatever Kayne is hearing it would also explain the Witch鈥檚 episode. With him choosing to flick from the channel that is Yorick to instead watching via the Witch.
Anyway in conclusion what if what we hear as listeners is whatever channel into Jarthurs mind that Kayne is tuning into.
