Winnie’s Op

Her Luxating Patella Surgery Journey

2018 started with a big upset for myself and Winnie. During her yearly vaccination appointment in January Winnie’s vet noticed that her knee caps were freely dislocating. I was very shocked to hear so as I’d never seen Winnie in any discomfort or limping and initially it made me feel like such a bad furmum for not noticing.

After speaking to the vet about this in depth it was clear that poor Winnie was in more pain than she was showing. We really don’t deserve dogs, they are the most selfless, loving, incredible babies.

After viewing the X-rays it was decided that both legs are to be operated on, as her left back left leg was worse this leg was operated on first. We are now 6 weeks post op on Winnie’s first leg and I wanted to write a blog post to honestly reflect on our journey so far and help any other dog parents whose fur baby has to go through the same surgery.

The first step as mentioned above were Winnie’s X-rays on both back legs to determine the severity of her condition. I dropped Winnie off at the vets in the morning and I was updated during the day as to when she was coming round from the sedation and later picked her up in the afternoon. I was very worried all day, I know I needn’t be but its hard not to when its your fur baby! When I went to pick Winnie up I was expecting her to be quite lethargic and upset but she came bounding out of the back room so that made me feel at ease.

Winnie isn’t the best patient as she gets nervous and can be snappy (that’s the Pomeranian in her being feisty) I can’t tell her off for being a strong woman like her Mum, girl power!

Anyway, the surgeon then looked at her X-ray and rang me to discuss the surgeries.

So then the morning of her first surgery arrived. I cried like a baby when I dropped her off and during the whole drive to work and on a few intervals during the day when awaiting the call felt like days.

The Vets4Pets surgery were fantastic and constantly updated me during the process I must note.

I was nervous to see my poor baby in pain after the operation, it was very upsetting, her leg was shaved up to her tail, she was wearing a cone (given her temperament I knew she would be hating it) her eyes were very sleepy and she was sobbing. It was heartbreaking. This is all of course normal after such a surgery but very upsetting never the less.

The first 3 days were the hardest, Winnie of course had pain medication but was still very sore and poorly during this time. Full cage rest during the first week meant picking her up and holding her whilst she went to the toilet. It took her a day to have her first wee which was met by applause and proud cuddles, but it then took 6 days for her first poop. Poor Winnie was over the moon with her first poop, so was I, I’d never praised a poop so much in my life! After a bad week I could see the light at the end of the tunnel after that moment.

In week 2 Winnie started to begin putting weight on her leg, then slowly we began exercises and very short walks to encourage movement. At first she would hop and skip getting around pretty fast on three legs but we needed to walk slowly to build up her strength so she was comfortable on four legs again. After a few weeks Winnie then started to get her normal energy levels back and wanted to run before she could walk, being Winnie she’s a very active little ball of fur so it was hard stopping her from over exerting herself!

Seeing her normal self coming back was brilliant and I started to notice improvements that I didn’t know were problems to begin with. Like the way she squats for wees, she used to lift her leg up and now she perfectly squats. Also in the way she sits now and perfectly tucks her leg in. She still limps a little bit at the stage (6 weeks post op) but its still early days and we can just continue with her exercises as advised.

Deciding on the surgery was tough but it was a decision I’ve 100% stood by seeing her improvements and knowing if I had of not chose surgery Winnie would most likely have been lame in later years. Winnies post op X-rays were today and the surgery has been a success! No need to remove the pin (which is sometimes needed in small breeds) needless to say I’m over the moon that Winnie has done so well and although I’m still nervous about the second operation but I know it’s in Winnie’s best interest. Hooman Post...I'm sorry we've been quiet furiends we have been back and forth to the vets and after X-rays Winnie has to have Luxating Patella Surgery tomorrow morning on her left back leg first then the right back once it's safe to do so. I'm very worried and upset that my baby has to go through this have any furiends had this surgery or can give advice?
