eren gives armin a soft kiss to his forehead and pushes a small cake into his hands, "happy birthday, armin," he says with a smile.

his expression is alight instantly, before eren even presses the cake into his hands. “ this is for me? thank you— ” his voice is surprised, as if eren hasn’t been there for every birthday, as if it shocks him that anyone would remember at all. the cake is a sweet gesture, but it would be enough, still, just to have his friend, just to have his affection. he takes the fork from the plate and starts to cut the cake apart without a second thought, carving it up for him before it can ever occur to him to slice his own portion. “ here, you should have some, too, ” he insists, sticking the frosting-covered pad of his thumb into his mouth. “ i read this somewhere once — you’re meant to give the first piece to the person you love the most. ”

ooc. it’s armin’s birthday woo

she leans over an old fence, soft eyed at colors above. a stark orange spreading across his favorite shade of blue. “ the leaves will start changing soon. ” the air is crisp with such a promise, falling from branches when their stems have broke. “ will you head back to the city soon? ” she dreads the solitude after he visits, little home emptier than before somehow.

he settles by her side, rests his hands over the splintering wood. as if to prove her point, the breeze rustles his clothes insistently, nips at his cheeks and the tip of his nose. his eyes are cast towards the sky where hers are, meeting somewhere in the tawny tint blotting out the blue. he thinks it doesn't look the way it used to, something he presses out of his mind at her question. " yeah, " he answers quietly, solemn at the thought of the sentence that the city is — where nothing and no one feels like home and everyone is avoiding ghosts they hope not to meet on side streets, their faces around each corner. " i won't be long, though, " he assures her. he says it as if the city is only a place he visits, as if she is where he will inevitably return to, the one remnant of home.

ooc. thinking abt armin’s manipulation lately and all the things to be said about it. when you’re the “weakest” dog in the pack so you take whatever strengths you can get. armed with your wits and if your words don’t work you jump straight to tears to appeal to emotion. you use being seen as a “weak” and “emotional” person to your advantage out of necessity as a means to your end because it’s all you have in a world built on physical conflict and you learned at a young age that’s the best way for you to survive when you’re at the bottom of the pecking order.
