Hey, so I’m really new to this whole wrestling thing (I got into it less than a week ago thanks to the Golden Lovers), and I feel like I have a lot of catching up to do, but I don’t really know where to start or where to find good sources. I’m mostly interested in getting a deeper understanding of the Golden Lovers storyline, as well as important matches from Kenny and Kota’s single careers. Are there any particular matches you’d recommend to a newbie as a good place to start?
Thank you for asking this! This lovely tumblr user asked me this question over DM and I asked them to submit it, bc I kinda can’t believe I don’t have a post like this already!
This is very long! Please enjoy and send feedback!
Getting started with the Golden☆Lovers - a Golden Lovers masterpost
First, a disclaimer: This story is hella gay. I know that a lot of people are coming to the story because they heard about a gay romance in wrestling. I’ve also heard from several people who, when looking further into it, got a weird gaslight-y feeling, because a lot of the sources of information about the Golden Lovers just… don’t mention that it’s a gay love story. Or they treat the gay “aspect” of it as an “equally valid interpretation.” Kenny himself framed it in those terms when asked directly about it. (While that was understandably hurtful to some people, I very strongly believe that he is not in a professional position where he can say ‘yep it’s gay.’ He’s been super clear about it in pretty much every way except that one.)
So, for people dipping their toe into these waters, let me just say: the gayness is not an “interpretation.” It’s the story. If for some reason you’re reading this post and you’re not into the fact that gayness is central to and inseparable from the Golden Lovers saga, this isn’t the post for you, bud.

I was making a thing about Kenny and the Bucks and the Okada Trilogy and I just got fcking SPEARED out of NOWHERE with Golden Lovers feelings so I gotta say this really fast
Kenny (the character) believed for a long time that his only worth, his only value came from his wrestling.
You can see it in the way he reacts to losses sometimes. He goes 60 minutes with Okada, gets closer to beating him than anyone before or since. And his immediate reaction?
In the Golden Lovers’ first interview together after their reunion Kenny says that he’d felt alone for a long time.
“And maybe even to some degree that no one care about me. I felt that it was just my job and my existence to give everything to wrestling. My health, my body, my soul. Didn’t matter if I was broken.“
He believed he was broken as a *person*, damaged perhaps beyond repair, but he still had to give everything to wrestling, because no one valued any other part of him
You can see that belief too in the way Kenny tried to lure Kota back to him. He believed that winning the G1 or having The Best Match Ever at the Tokyo Dome would make Kota come back, because he believed that those things were what made him, you know, worth loving…
but when Kota approached him it was always after losses.
When they finally reunite Kenny has lost everything he believes makes him valuable: his title, his status as leader…and then suddenly here’s Kota, ready to love him at his lowest, at his most “worthless”
Kota doesn’t care if Kenny has a title or if he’s leader of the Bullet Club. Kota wasn’t even fucking impressed by Kenny’s match with Okada. Those aren’t the things that make Kota love him.
Because Kota loves Kenny the man, not The Cleaner or The Best Bout Machine. He sees and loves Kenny the person.
ANYWAY LOVE IS REAL AND KOTA IS GONNA BE THERE TO SUPPORT KENNY AND LOVE HIM WIN OR LOSE AT DOMINION
