Miles Edgeworth who is travelling abroad, receives a phone call from Larry Butz. He tells him that Phoenix Wright is in danger and might already be dead. Edgeworth agrees to help and charters a jet to return home.

Edgeworth meets Wright in hospital, Larry had exaggerated his condition, but he still needs two days of bedrest. Wright gives Edgeworth his magatama and attorney badge and asks him defend Iris, who is the main suspect of Deauxnim’s murder.

Edgeworth begins his investigation by questioning Iris at the Detention Center Iris tells Edgeworth that she had meet Wright five years previously, when she had deceived him, she thought it would be for the best if they never meet again. She also explains that on the night of the murder she had rang the bells to announce lights out, but after that she had returned to her room because she was frightened of something. She refuses to elaborate on this and Psyche-Locks appear.

Arriving at Hazakura Temple, Edgeworth meets Detective Gumshoe. He explains that the bridge fire was caused by a lightning strike, and that the police have no records on either Iris or Elise Deauxnim. Deauxnim autopsy report places her time of death between 10 to 11pm, and notes that the body was bruised as if it fell. He also meets Larry who claims he doesn’t remember what he was doing last night.

Entering the temple Edgeworth meets Sister Bikini who had seen Iris stabbing Deauxnim with the Shichishito. She also notes that with the bridge destroyed, Maya Fey is trapped in the Inner Temple, and Pearl Fey has been missing since the previous night. Near the temples altar Edgeworth finds a letter for Iris. It tells her to be at the Heavenly Hall by 10pm or her secret would be revealed.

Edgeworth returns to the Detention Center and shows Iris the letter. She explains that she feared that someone would reveal her secret to Wright. She had stayed in her room, rather than go to the Inner Temple, because she feared that she would be ambushed by the blackmailer. She explains that the Heavenly Hall is a small hut, near Dusky Bridge.

At the Heavenly Hall, Edgeworth and Gumshoe meet Larry. They work out that the letter was actually a love note, Larry had sent to Iris. He had spent the night waiting for her and had seen the bridge being struck by lightning. He claims to have seen something incredible.
