Thinking again about if and how animation might exist in the world of Nevermoor…..

Just had the idea of two people with an “animator” knack. One is mundane and their knack is like the animators of our world. One is arcane and their knack is bringing innanimate objects to life.

Are they siblings? Rivals? Enemies to friends? Collaborators with Sofia on an ethically questionable stop motion film a la the taxidermy films of Władysław Starewicz and Jan Švankmajer? Much to think about……..

Today I rewatched the lovely animated film Sirocco and the Kingdom of Winds and I think that it is wonderfully Nevermoorian in its own wacky way 🫶🫶🫶

Tuned in to a livestream from Books of Wonder a few weeks ago that featured a bunch of middle grade fantasy authors: Mia Aruajo, George Jreije, Anne Ursu, Pari Thomson, and Jessica Townsend. It was supposed to be recorded but technical issues caused it to move to Zoom, so I tried to write things down the best I could.

I was one of 2-3 viewers so I got to have my questions answered! Only recorded what Jess said, but everyone gave interesting answers.

If you didn't write your books and had to read another author's vision of it, what author would you like to see tackle your story?

Richard Osmon, because she’s been reading so many murder mysteries lately. Would love to see 919 as octogenarians.

If your books had an animated adaptation, what style would you want to see most? 2D, 3D, stop motion, or something else?

Ghibli! Didn’t grow up with them though, and only discovered the movies recently.

There wasn’t much else because Silverborn hadn’t come out yet in the US so she couldn’t really discuss it in detail, but here are some little tidbits I wrote down:

— Mentioned how she “knows quite a bit about a lot” of the 27 boroughs in the city of Nevermoor, which gives me hope we’ll see more sometime.

— She loves taking fantasy things and fusing with the mundane things in the world and the bureaucracy of how things work.

—— Specifically with dragonriding: she wanted to make it dirty, like horseracing with all the money flying around and corruption.

— Her favorite characters to write are always the random little side characters.

—— Her favorite with Hollowpox was Nurse Tim and she “can’t wait to write more of him.”

— “Really, really, really,” enjoyed writing every scene of Squall in this book, our view of him is rapidly evolving.

— She has no specific writing process or routine.

— She said “I don’t know if it’ll ever happen” about the movie which cracked me up, but she just means it’s being developed but has yet to be actually greenlit.

— Lot of things “set up to fall down” in Book 5.

jupiter's patron has the same last name as the guy who wrote 'Curiosities, Marvels, Spectacles, Singularities, and Phenomena: An Unabridged History of the Wundrous Acts Spectrum (Vol. 307)', do you think that's why jupiter is so well versed in areas concerning wundersmiths? i think it'd be cool if his patron was part of the original sub-9 academic group and wrote those books, or if he was descended from the person who wrote them. got this from the nevermoor wiki, not original!

Yessssss I have been thinking a lot about that! I even added it to the wiki lol 🕺🏻

One thing I’m not clear about is whether Sudbury the patron was also the one that took Bertram in at age 9. Did he take in Bertram because he thought he might be a Wundersmith? Bertram seemed to know about the connection between “cursed children” and Wundersmith and how he wasn’t one. What was it like when it was clear he wasn’t a Wundersmith at all?

It then makes me think that he totally could have instructed Jupiter about various Wundersmith stuff. I don’t think it was a completely comprehensive education, as in the books I think we see him still learning more and more, but I think it was significant enough. I do often wonder why he’s not more involved with Sub-Nine though… maybe he’s just too busy otherwise?

It all kind of adds some more interesting layers to the dynamic between Bertram and Jupiter and their patron. And Jess DID say in one of the recaps that the authors of the books would become relevant, so….. 👀👀👀

The original idea/an early idea for the series involved Mog as an eccentric aunt so I really really hope in Nevernine we get to see an epilogue or something of older Mog as all of the above <3

ok many things i need to say abt the jessica townsend in conversation but first of all the thing that stuck with me the most:

"Formidable, brave, interesting, intelligent, eccentric, funny, cool."

Those were the words that jessica townsend used to describe adult mog(!!) and all this stuff going on now is what she needs to get her to that point
