Louis and Lestat have always had a complicated relationship. So this time around Louis wants it to be calm and easy. They simply text and meet up when they can. And when Lestat’s concerts begin Louis goes to a lot of them for support of course.

Every concert Lestat does a cover. Sometimes they are obviously about Louis, as Lestat will tell him straight forward after the concert. Usually upbeat lovey dovey songs or unabashedly horny songs. Louis always just laughs them off, loving it deep down but not showing it. Other times they are about Claudia, and Louis knows when this is as Lestat will always look to Louis in the crowd or backstage and give him a soft smile. Then other songs are simply for fun.

Concert after concert passes, Louis basically going to every single one now with the excuse that he likes to travel. However, the last few weeks Lestat has felt more distant. He’s not trying to spend every waking hour with Louis anymore and is no longer playing covers about him. Louis tells himself that the ache in his stomach that happens every time he realizes the cover can’t be about him is just his hunger. It’s been three weeks and eight shows now. Louis has no reason to feel weird about it though because they aren’t together. But, he does feel weird. So weird that it kind of hurts.

As Lestat is getting ready one night on the side stage to go out for his cover, Louis approaches him. Giving him a gentle shoulder squeeze he tells him that he’s excited to hear what tonight’s cover is about. Lestat ever so slightly freezes at this while continuing to look straight forward at the stage before nodding and running out to the crowd. Others wouldn’t have noticed the slight trepidation Lestat presented at his words but Louis did. Of course Louis did but he didn’t know what to make of it, not yet.

The lights on stage go low while the crowds wristbands twinkle with light and the band begins playing some soft piano and drums. Then the words “Turn down the lights, turn down the bed. Turn down these voices inside my head” come out of Lestat. Louis doesn’t breathe the entire time Lestat sings I Can’t Make You Love Me, completely transfixed on the cover. Louis finally unfreezes as the crowd screams at the end and manages to hear different voices in the crowd wonder how Lestat makes the bloody tears look so real. This makes Louis freeze again, realizing Lestat is on stage with tears streaming down his face.

Louis waits impatiently as Lestat finishes up his last few songs of the concert. The crowds screams are deafening as Lestat says good night. Everyone in the band and backstage is going crazy having yet another successful show. But Louis is only focused on getting to Lestat. When he finally gets to him through the group of everyone he doesn’t waste a second before asking who tonight’s cover was about. Lestat hesitates, his mouth slightly agape and eyes awkwardly darting around before saying “C’est compliqué” and walking through everyone to his dressing room.

Louis follows him immediately, surprising even himself. He is over the not talking every night, over wondering what changed, over being anything other than themselves. He’s over them not being together. Lestat sits staring into the mirror before looking up at Louis in the doorway behind him, one crimson tear slipping down his cheek. Lestat can’t get a word out before Louis is saying “You’re lucky I love complicated.”

Louis : [Well I can't. This is his safe place. You will have to find him by yourself I'm afraid.]

Daniel : [Of course. He can't make anything easy. As if he didn't have enough safe places with his ten properties.]

Louis [Approximately.]

My headcanon: Lestat would watch the movie Selena and be utterly devastated then find out it’s a true story and be inconsolable for a month before finally getting himself together just so he could go off Yolanda.
