Which is why the dark look in his eyes scares Hiroto so much. His boyfriend is entirely too serious, too calm, too indifferent. There’s bullets flying everywhere, glass covering the floor and more enemies than he can count but Masaki doesn’t even look phased. He wouldn't look out of place taking a stroll through the park. 

Every move his brother makes is calculated, controlled, effortless even as he takes on machine guns firing more bullets per second than he can see.

In the days following, Masaki pretends he’s okay but that’s all it is: pretending, a role he plays with finesse. He’s good too, so good that Hiroto almost doesn’t realize it at all. It’s the dark circles, the sleeplessness, the nightmares, the loss of weight and how out of breath Masaki is when the spare that catches his eyes, makes Hiroto see that Masaki isn’t okay. His boyfriend looks so frail, fragile, so unlike himself in a way that hurts to see. It terrifies him.

A month or so later when Masaki is practically glowing but Hiroto can see he’s still struggling, he decides to take his boyfriend out for the night, as if to reward him for all the progress he’s made.

Why his hands start shaking as soon as they part from Hiroto’s, why his breath catches hard and fast as soon as Hiroto makes a move in any direction away from him, why the cold grip of fear and anxiety grabs his heart in a vice at the mere suggestion of Hiroto going anywhere without him, why the panic sets in at night and Masaki has to rush to lock up the doors and windows. 

He doesn’t understand this fear, this panic, this ache in his chest, this paranoia. 

He doesn’t understand but he does and he hates it. 

He’s not clingy. 

Possessive, yes. 

Clingy, no. 

What’s wrong with me? Why am I like this? 

He knows why. 

It’s because of that night, the night Hiroto came so close to dying. 

To leaving him. 

Forever.

Masaki wants to be relieved, wants to feel happy, finally it's over, finally they’ve won against their enemies, finally they’ve gotten revenge against all of Kuryu . They’ve done it, they’ve made an actual difference, Aniki would be so proud of them. 

But he doesn’t, not really.

He’s still too keyed up, too flighty, too panicky. 

All he wants is to bundle his boyfriend up, to lay on his chest and listen to the rhythmic thump of his heart and the soothing rise and fall of each breath he takes. He wants to hold him tight and never let him leave his side. Masaki wants Hiroto to pin him down, rest all his weight on him, wrap him up in his arms and hold him forever. 

And he can’t stop those feelings.

When they finally have a moment of freedom, Masaki barely lets his brother get into their room before he crowds Hiroto against the door. 

He pushes into his brother's space, arms sliding around to hold him as Masaki settles in close. He tucks his face into the crook of his brother’s — his boyfriend’s — neck and just — breathes. He takes a few moments to feel Hiroto’s warmth, to reassure himself that he’s still alive. 

Masaki repeats it to himself, a mantra of Hiroto’s still alive, he’s okay, he’s still here starting up. Masaki inhales deeply, nose floors with cinnamon, sandalwood and sweat, everything that is unmistakably Hiroto. 

It’s intoxicating and Masaki can’t stop himself from kissing the soft skin under his lips, can’t help it as he slowly makes his way up his boyfriend’s neck to suck gently at his pulse point.

Except this time no one is around them, there’s no need to be careful, no rush in his actions.

He saw the red light — a laser targeted at his brother’s heart. 

Panic seized him as he screamed out a warning — too little, too late. 

No please, not Hiroto —

Blood scattered across Hiroto’s face.

Already in motion, Masaki flew towards his brother — his brother who had just been shot, who would be bleeding to death, if not already dead. 

Finally, he reached his side, staring in horror, eyes locked to Hiroto’s.

Gently he cleans the blood off his brother’s face and neck, carefully wiping under his eye, down the bridge of his nose, across his cheekbone, back across his jawline, down his neck several times before tracing across his collarbone. 

Hiroto lets Masaki take care of him without a fight, basking in his quiet attention and pushing to his warmth. He barely waits until Masaki finishes, tucking his face into the crook of his brother’s neck as soon as the cloth drops away. 

Masaki sighs under his breath, pulling Hiroto closer, his now free hand sliding up his brother’s arm to gently hold the back of his neck, fingers sliding into his short hair. Hiroto shudders against him, tremors shaking through him, his hands tighten on his hips, strong enough to leave bruises. 

Masaki just holds him tighter, shifting closer until they are pressed together from head to toe, “that was close, Hiroto,” he whispers.

“Too close, Aniki.”

Masaki was at it again. Flirting. And Hiroto couldn’t do anything about it.

It was one of their rare nights out. They just finished up a job with Takeru, who had decided that they deserved a night out. Masaki had no objections and Hiroto had decided to stick with them rather than return to their hotel room by himself. Takeru wanted to eat so they went to grab a bite of food at a nearby restaurant. The food was pretty good and the company even better. 

He sat next to Masaki in the booth. He was close enough to his brother to have their thighs press together, their shoulders brush with every move as they ate. 

Usually he sat next to Takeru, wanting to be close to his oldest brother but Takeru had been content claiming a side for himself and Hiroto took the opportunity to sit next to Masaki. When they finished eating, Takeru suggested they go to some club down the street, have some fun that didn’t involve fighting. 

Takeru had left almost immediately upon entering the club, telling them not to get in any trouble and that he’d see them sometime late tomorrow afternoon. 

He’d gotten a room by himself and intended to use it. 

Masaki and Hiroto were sharing a separate room. He’d wanted to tell Masaki not to bring anyone back, like hell he wanted to hear or see that, but he didn’t get the chance. 

Masaki had already taken off in the opposite direction of Takeru while Hiroto had been trying to adjust to the pounding music and flashing lights of the club. 

Hiroto headed to the bar, he might as well try to enjoy himself a little. After getting a drink, he moved through the crowd to stand against the wall, hoping to catch a glimpse of either of the other two. 

When he did, Hiroto regretted looking at all. 

Masaki was dancing.

With some girl latched onto him.

The first time isn't their fault, not really. 

Hiroto’s motorcycle was in the shop. What was he supposed to do? Takeru said he had to go too. What was he supposed to walk all the way to the market watching as Aniki and Masaki sped past or something? As if. 

It hadn't been a big deal, not really. 

He, Masaki and Takeru hadn’t thought anything of it. Masaki was just driving them both down. They had shared bikes multiple times in the past, this was no different. 

Hiroto had slid on behind Masaki, pressing in close as he wrapped his arms around his brother’s waist. The close contact was necessary, it was to keep him from falling off the motorcycle at the high speeds they traveled in. 

Takeru and Masaki zoomed through to the market fast enough to draw attention, quickly finding their usual parking spaces. As Hiroto climbed off the bike, the strap of his backpack got caught on something causing him to fall forwards. He probably would’ve hit the ground if it hadn't been for Masaki’s quick reflexes. 

Masaki’s hands swiftly grabbed onto his waist, the momentum making Hiroto fall into his brother’s chest. Masaki held him steady as Hiroro regained his balance before releasing the hold of one of his hands to reach past and untangle Hiroto’s bag. 

It was nothing, just Masaki helping him out, it didn't mean they were together. 

The crowd of people around them did not get that memo.

Takeru’s voice breaks them out of the spell, “Jeez, I know you kids are horny but at least have the decency not to fuck in the middle of the street.” 

Hiroto freezes on top of Masaki as they both realize how they’ve been laying, Hiroto against his bare chest, pressed together from head to toe, how they must look. 

They jump apart, protesting loudly to their Aniki. 

Takeru just heads back inside mumbling to himself, deaf to his brother’s hasty excuses.

Masaki doesn’t know who his soulmate is, not for many years. He remembers the first time he felt his soulmate, a sharp stabbing pain that crushed his chest followed by a bone deep ache and weariness. It went on and off for days, getting worse and worse before letting up. He didn’t realize it then but years later he would find out that his soulmate was experiencing extreme emotional pain not physical which is why it fluctuated so much, disappearing and reappearing seemingly randomly throughout the days and nights. Over time the pain lessened, not reappearing for days. And then came a different kind of pain, one that burned and left bruises that covered his hands, his arms, his torso. This physical pain came about randomly, sporadically, mostly around the time school let out. Masaki figures his soulmate must like to get in a lot of fights. He figures it must be a boy, no girl is dumb enough to get in this many fights in such a short frame of time. 

When his dad remarries, Masaki does his best to accept his step-mom and step-brother, something that gets increasingly difficult as the pain in his chest doesn’t dissipate. It's then when Hiroto comes home everyday with evidence of fist fights that Masaki, ever doubtful and hesitant, begins to put the pieces together. He refuses to believe it, thinking he’s just being stupid. His brother can’t possibly be his soulmate. But denying it becomes hard when everything begins to match up. He feels the pain from Hiroto almost daily fights, feels him suffer on the anniversary of his father's death. 

All too soon, there are too many coincidences to make excuses for. He tracks Hiroto one day, following him after class. He watches as his brother fights and curses when he feels the pain match up to the blows he deals out and receives. After that, denying it is useless. Masaki still refuses to say anything. What would people think if they found out his soulmate is his brother!?

Sounds are too loud. Whispers feel like screams, the rumble of cars, blaring of horns, slamming of doors and people yelling at each other are far too much. He's hearing things that should be impossible, the mice scattering sound in the neighboring building - down the street, the chatter of students from the highschool miles from his, the baying of dogs chasing yowling cats streets over. 

Closing his eyes only makes it worse.

Masaki’s back, he can tell.

He can hear that thump mixing with a soft mumbling of words. 

Can feel the warmth he’s resting against. It surrounds him in a way that must mean he’s lying on someone, held in their arms.

Slowly he inhales through his nose, scared of smelling metallic, ozone, blood.

Instead he finds cinnamon, sandalwood, sweat and dirt. 

Hiroto.

He doesn't open his eyes, not yet. He sinks into his brother instead, not realizing how tense he was until he relaxes completely.

Thump.

The familiar sound lulles him into an even more relaxed state, his weight falling onto Hiroto completely. 

Masaki knows his brother is scared, can feel it, how he worries for him despite his previous hatred. 

He should get up, make an excuse, something but he can't bring himself to move. 

He doesn't want to leave the comfort of Hiroto’s arms, not yet.

He's been dealing with this for so long, alone. 

He knows that this changes things.

Hiroto wakes up cold and instantly knows something is wrong. 

He never wakes up cold. 

He’s always curled around Masaki. 

Masaki who runs hot enough to be a living heater. 

Masaki who is gone. 

He feels across the bed to the other side, Masaki’s side, only to realize he’s lying on Masaki’s side. 

Hiroto’s up, wide awake before he knows it, peering across to his side of the bed. 

Empty. 

His heart lurches in his chest before plummeting  as he looks around. A sinking feeling squirms it's way under his skin. 

No. 

He forces himself to breathe, shoves the panic aside. 

Maybe he's just in the kitchen, he tells himself, body stilling as he strains his ears to hear sounds coming from outside of their bedroom. 

Nothing. 

Shit. Shit. Shit.
