Lawyer: San Francisco to pay $190K for sanctuary violation
A man from El Salvador in the U.S. illegally who sued San Francisco after police turned him over to immigration authorities in violation of the city's sanctuary law is set to be awarded $190,000, his attorney said Thursday.Pedro Figueroa-Zarceno, 33, reached the settlement agreement with the city attorney's office, said Saira Hussain, a staff attorney at the Asian Law Caucus who represented Zarceno. The agreement must be approved by the Board of Supervisors. "We have to insure that each and every local law enforcement official is following those sanctuary policies and we are seeing in Mr. Figueroa's case that didn't happen," Hussain said.Figueroa-Zarceno sued San Francisco in January for violating its sanctuary city law.The construction worker said he went to police in December 2015 after getting a call from authorities that his stolen car had been found.
I went into the police station to seek help and they didn't tell me what was happening and they arrested me and treated me badly.
Mr. Figueroa
City law prohibits law enforcement officers from cooperating with federal immigration officials except when violent criminals are involved.Part of the law's purpose was to encourage immigrants to report crimes they may be afraid of disclosing because of fear that investigating officers would turn them over to immigration authorities.San Francisco's sanctuary law was thrust into the national debate on immigration after the July 2015 slaying of 32-year-old Kathryn Steinle. The man charged with murder in Steinle's slaying, Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, had been released by San Francisco sheriff's officials months earlier despite a request by immigration officials to keep him behind bars.

Bulls surprise Sharks as Super Rugby returns in South Africa
The Bulls beat the Sharks 30-17 on Friday on Super Rugby's return in South Africa following a monthlong break for internationals, leaving the Sharks with a likely trip to New Zealand to face the table-topping Crusaders in the playoffs.Fullback Warrick Gelant scored a hat trick of tries, with his first two in the space of five minutes in the first half, to lead the Bulls to their surprise win away in Durban. The three-time champion Bulls have had a poor year — one of their worst in Super Rugby — and it was only their fourth win of the season, their first since April, and their first away from home. The Sharks had already qualified for the playoffs but are playing for position and to determine their knockout opponents.
Nic de Jager scored the Bulls' first try at Kings Park after an error from the Sharks at a defensive lineout, and that trend continued as the Bulls pounced on mistakes and turnovers from the Sharks for three of their four tries. The Sharks had tries from prop Thomas du Toit in the first half and fullback Curwin Bosch in the second, but each time Galant responded almost immediately to put the Bulls back in control. The Sharks' loss made it more likely they will face the unenviable task of traveling to Christchurch to face the powerful Crusaders, who have won all 14 of their games so far this season. However, that scenario is not completely certain. The Sharks could still improve their seeding for the playoffs but will probably need a bonus-point win over the Lions and New Zealand's Highlanders to slip up in their final league game against Queensland Reds.

MSNBC 'Morning Joe' hosts fire back at Trump Twitter blasts
Morning Joe" hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski said Friday that President Donald Trump lied about their December encounter in a tweet and that his "unhealthy obsession" with their program doesn't serve his mental health or the country well. The two MSNBC personalities postponed a vacation in order to respond to Trump's tweet, which drew broad condemnation a day earlier because he called Brzezinski "crazy" and said she was "bleeding badly from a face-lift" when he saw them at his Florida estate." It's been fascinating and frightening and really sad for our country, Brzezinski said on their program. "We're OK," said Scarborough, her co-host and fiance.
It is unbelievably alarming that this president is so easily played, he is easily played by a cable news host.

Stephen Colbert calls Trump's tweets aimed at Mika Brzezinski a 'buffet of s---'
I thought by now after five months of this that my soul had calcified into a crouton. Colbert is referring to Trump's tweets on Thursday morning aimed at MSNBC "Morning Joe" cohost Mika Brzezinski, in which he wrote: "I heard poorly rated @Morning_Joe speaks badly of me (don't watch anymore)," Trump tweeted. "Then how come low I.Q. Crazy Mika, along with Psycho Joe [Scarborough,] came to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Year's Eve, and insisted on joining me.
Nothing makes a man feel better than making a fake cover of a magazine about himself lying every day and destroying the country.

London borough leader resigns after tower block fire
The head of the local council in the London borough where at least 80 people died in a fire in a social housing tower block resigned on Friday after he was criticised for the organisation's handling of the disaster. "As council leader, I have to accept my share of responsibility for these perceived failings," Nicholas Paget-Brown, the leader of Kensington & Chelsea council, said in a statement. He acknowledged criticism of his decision on Thursday to suspend a council meeting on the June 14 disaster at Grenfell Tower when media attempted to follow proceedings, something he said was necessary to avoid compromising a public inquiry.
It cannot be right that this should have become the focus of attention when so many are dead or are unaccounted for.
Prime Minister Theresa
They also want explanations about why their concerns had been ignored. May has also been widely criticised for her initial response to the blaze.

Their fortunes enmeshed, Trump and Putin to hold first meeting next week
U.S. President Donald Trump will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week at a summit in Germany that brings two world leaders whose political fortunes have become intertwined face-to-face for the first time. Both the Kremlin and the White House announced on Thursday that the pair will meet on the sidelines of the July 7-8 summit of G20 nations in Hamburg. Trump's national security adviser H.R. McMaster downplayed the significance of the meeting, one of nine such side meetings for the U.S. president over two days.
I would hope what he would do is hand him a list of the issues we have with their country. And I think he may well do that.
Bob Corker, the influential chairman of the Senate foreign relations committee

US approves 1st arms sale to Taiwan under Trump
The State Department has approved arms sales to Taiwan worth a total of $1.4 billion, the first such deal with the self-governing island since President Donald Trump took office, officials said Thursday. The sale will anger China, which regards Taiwan as part of its territory. It comes at a delicate time for relations between Washington and Beijing over efforts to rein in nuclear-armed North Korea. The sale to Taiwan comprises seven items, including technical support for early warning radar, anti-radiation missiles, torpedoes and components for SM-2 missiles, according to a U.S. official who requested anonymity to discuss the details before they were formally announced.State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the Trump administration had notified Congress of its intent to approve seven proposed deals now valued at around $1.4 billion.
It shows, we believe, our support for Taiwan's ability to maintain a sufficient self-defense policy.
State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert
They included two decommissioned U.S. Navy frigates, anti-tank missiles, amphibious assault vehicles and Stinger surface-to-air missiles, and was the first sale for four years.China objected strongly, but it did not notably set back U.S.-China relations and military ties, which has happened after past arms sales to Taiwan. However, relations across the Taiwan Strait have deteriorated since then, as Taiwan last year elected a leader from an independence-leaning party, Tsai Ing-wen. China has increased diplomatic pressure, cut off its contacts with the island's government and discouraged travel there by Chinese tourists.
The arms sale will help strengthen our country's self-defense capability and maintain the peace on Taiwan strait.
