Chapter Six of Wedding Vows and Other Lies is up, where Charles turns 28, eats some questionable spaghetti, and decides that one proposal isn't enough.

Excerpt:

“I’m sorry,” Charles says under his breath as the conversation moves on to someone’s new baby. Edwin blinks at him, looking puzzled. “Whatever for?” “It was sort of a shit proposal, wasn’t it?” “I wouldn’t say that,” Edwin says in the delicate tone he uses when he’s trying very hard to say the right thing. “It was the best either of us could have hoped for in that situation.” “You deserve better than the best we could hope for,” Charles says, more forcefully than he means to. Edwin’s forehead creases in a frown as he drops his voice to a whisper. “It was a fake proposal, Charles. I was hardly expecting more. I wasn’t expecting it at all.” “You should expect more,” Charles tells him seriously. Because Edwin has to know that he deserves the world. He deserves someone who loves him half as much as Charles does. “You should expect everything, mate.” Edwin’s lips twitch into a tiny smile. “That seems excessive.” “No.” Inspiration striking, Charles rises to his feet, stumbling a little in his enthusiasm. Or maybe he’s a bit drunker than he thought. “No, I want a do over, yeah?” “Oh my God,” he hears Crystal mutter from across the table, but he ignores her. “Charles,” Edwin says slowly, eyebrows raised. “You cannot propose twice.” “Watch me,” Charles says and drops to one knee on the sticky floor of the Tongue & Tail.

something that's interesting to me, as a person who read the comics and watched 'dead patrol' before dbd came out, is the different portrayals of edwin and charles' relationship.

in 'dead patrol,' the energy is, they've been dating for the past thirty years and charles doesn't know how to break it to edwin

in the comics, the energy is 'charles plz stop flirting with every girl you encounter' 'and you've never liked a girl????' 'um'

and in the @netflix series, the energy is, they have been dating for the past thirty years and neither of them knows it

i love all the iterations but damn there's something about two idiots, bubbling around each other, hopelessly in love and oblivious to it. mutual pining but neither of them realize that they are pining. you are the ONLY person that matters. i would kill for you and not bat an eye. of course i love you.

and i think specifically for charles, this is interesting. charles doesn't read his feelings to edwin as romantic because they have always been this way. the moment charles laid eyes on edwin, he was a goner. so of course charles doesn't know he's in love with edwin. he doesn't have a frame of reference for what Not Being in Love With Edwin looks like

You’re half Indian why are you any different? The racist little white boys agree. They beat you too. You make it away. You’re cold, so cold and something’s very wrong with you, and then you see a light. But you’re not dead. It’s another boy your age and he tells you he’s dead. He died in this same shitty boarding school and he reads you a bedtime story as you fall asleep. You’re dead now and he’s still here. He knew you were dying and he didn’t want you to be scared. He crawled out of Hell and the first thing he did was comfort you as you lay dying.

Why wouldn’t you run from death with him? Why wouldn’t you spend your eternity with him? Why wouldn’t you love him?

I hate how people are saying they did Belinda dirty. Like, of course she’s going to stay with her toddler in what could be her last moments.

And you know what? All they changed about her was the fact that she was a single mum, she’s still a Nurse, she’s still falls in love with travelling, but in this timeline she has a reason she can’t continue.

They didn’t bring Poppy back to make Belinda more “fulfilled” as a woman, the Doctor brought her back to bring his daughter back, and the Universe gave him the middle finger by making her fully human, and not his kid. And when he suggests to Belinda for both of them to travel with him, because Poppy’s not his child and it’s dangerous, she says no.

Bless RTD for one thing in this last special and that's for giving Jodie Whittaker better writing in two minutes than she had in her whole season. I don't even ship Thasmin, and I don't like the Doctor saying 'I Love You' but that interaction? Warmed my cold dead heart.

(Also, honestly loved the story of Poppy, unironically and wholly. I think it's so heartwrenching and fulfilling, and I adored seeing Anita back, she was my favourite part of the Christmas special. But like, can't believe he made me genuinely delighted with 13.)
