Can You Hear Me?
Warnings: fire, explosion, smoke, head injury, unclear character status
Caretaker's ears were ringing as they lay on the ground trying to piece together what had happened. They had been walking to meet Whumpee at the coffee shop. But then the world erupted in fire and smoke and they were on the ground.
They could hear the roar of a fire raging nearby. The air was clogged with smoke. Caretaker's body hurt, but they were in one piece. They rolled onto their side carefully. What had happened?
Caretaker could see other people laying on the sidewalk. Some were rising as they were. Others were still on the ground, blinking up at the smoke filled sky.
Where was Whumpee?
Fear consumed Caretaker as they looked up and realized the fire was centered at the coffee shop. "Whumpee!" Caretaker shouted, though the sound was muffled.
They scrambled to find their phone as they stood. Maybe Whumpee had been walking still. Whumpee had to be walking still. One text from Whumpee had Caretaker's mouth going dry. I got here a little early. Got us a seat by the stairs down and I got you a drink. Love you.
Caretaker called Whumpee. "Pick up. Pick up. Please. Pick up." Caretaker repeated over and over as the phone rang. Caretaker could barely hear over the sound of sirens headed their way.
"H-H-Helllllllllo-o-o-o-o?" Whumpee's raspy voice came through the line.
"Whumpee!" Caretaker felt weak with relief. "Are you ok? Where are you?"
Whumpee was quiet. "Whumpee?" Caretaker prompted.
"--hit--------head------fire--------here." Whumpee's words were distorted and static broke up what they were saying.
"Whumpee. Whumpee! Can you hear me?" Whumpee had hit their head?
"--------you. Can----------me?"
"Whumpee. If you can hear me. Just hold on. Help is on the way. Just hold on!" Caretaker began to run clumsily towards the coffee shop. If help was on the way, they could be there. Maybe even help. "Just hold on, Whumpee. I'm coming."

It’s the beginning of fire season, so I’m going to share this memory and some advice I learned the hard way.
In fall 2020 the wild fires on the west coast were so bad that you could barely see 15 feet at times. Where I lived the aqi hit 590 at one point. We could not evacuate and we had no insulation in our house.
The gas masks saved us. Me and my roommates taped our windows shut and wore respirators in the house for a week. I did this sketch of them while we were watching the muppet movie one night.
Most of you will have experience a fire or smoke storm at some point, this is not going away. Smoke inhalation can have permanent and long term effects.
Get a respirator mask, and get replacement filters for organic and biological material. They can be as cheep as $12, and even if you don’t think you’re at risk, it is not something you want to find out you need afterwards. If you can afford to, get extras. Someone you know might need it.
Also useful at protests, just saying…

[ID: A digital drawing of Pearl, Etho and Tango peeking from behind a wall. Pearl is standing up, leaning away from the wall as if coming from behind it. She has red and blue scales, gills, and fins.
Etho is leaning to his left to peek, extending his left leg for balance. He has a bright green eye with black sclera, and a bright red eye with dark red sclera. He also has pointed ears and phantom wings.
Tango is crouching behind the wall and peeking, with his hands on the wall. His hair is drawn as fire, and he has a thin long tail that ends in a tuff of hair, also drawn as fire. He has pointed ears that look charred at the tips.
The wall says "pet!", and the letters are aligned with the character they represent. /End ID]
PET postal woooooo
I never draw cartoony stuff and I took a lot of inspiration from @/cherrifire's style, as you can probably tell. Very happy with this one
