During the Romantic period costume balls were held where guests impersonated historical characters. One of the most famous of such events was the Quadrille Mary Stuart held at the Tuileries by the Duchesse de Berri in 1829. An album of water-colors by Eugène Lami recorded the costumes and the duchess was given a necklace and pair of bracelets enameled with miniatures of some of the most successful.
