despite being two years older, justin and hunter grew up side by side. neck and neck. their mothers are sisters and the boys' summers were spent playing street hockey with neighborhood kids and large family BBQs on the shore; while winters were spent lighting the menorah and terrorizing the local rink. they always balanced each other out well and were more likely to be mistaken as brothers rather than cousins.

he is much more quiet, more polished and driven. the "golden child" in comparison.. which has led to an affectionate rivalry between the two. justin was more academically focused and offered a NCAA D1 scholarship to michigan state. he was drafted by the tulsa thunderbirds in the third round, and played a year in the NCAA after his draft year before signing an entry level contract. he's been a defenseman with the AHL's rochester bison since as #13, occasionally getting called up to the NHL but hasn’t yet stuck. on the cusp— he's too good for the minors, but constantly edged out by bigger, flashier names at the top.

justin is a more cerebral player compared to hunter’s chaotic energy. where hunter chirps, justin analyzes. where hunter blows past a defenseman, justin shuts one down. he's a calm, calculated, puck-moving defenseman with high hockey iq, excellent at reading plays, and he's far less flashy. known for being calm under pressure and a locker room leader. not physical in the same way hunter is— he’ll angle you out with positioning instead of hip-checking you into next week.

he's very introverted off the ice and equally as awkward during interviews; but sarcastic as hell when he opens up with a dry sense of humor. the type to say "i'm not mad, just disappointed" and it's almost impossible to tell whether or not he means it or is just fucking around.. (he probably means it.)

mediocre acoustic guitar player, not that you'll ever hear it. started collecting vinyl before it was cool again, and he has a male domestic shorthair named gretzky. one time he took hunter to a party full of med students and it unsurprisingly went terribly.

the two often crash together during the offseason. either spending time back home with family in jersey, or taking turns visiting their respective cities and training together during the summer. when they're both in the same state during the season, they always make sure to skate or hit up a local diner. but even when separated, they're in constant contact— whether it be texting or calling; especially after games. hunter often goes to justin when he's feeling lost about his career, or when he needs validation after a bad loss. there's a little bit of bitterness when it comes to the attention hunter often receives for his antics. but it's only surface level, because justin doesn't even really care about the spotlight.

there's a not so distant future where their careers intertwine. where hunter gets his debut in the AHL and their teams inevitably clash. it makes for great media and promotion— but it's not as fun for their families as it is for the fans !

it's his turn to play passenger princess —— and like many before him, he's claimed temporary ownership over the entire bag of fast food currently nestled in his lap. ( remember when you were a kid? ) when everyone else's fries were suspiciously low by the time you got home... yeah, he's been not so discreetly picking at them during the drive back. picking at them meaning— he's been grabbing the greasiest soggiest saltiest ones from her meal for the last few minutes; and it's moments like these that he understands that stupid little dance chicks do when they finally eat their first meal of the day.

vic hazards a glance in his direction, makes sure to pour every ounce of unamused in her body into that split-second glance. "how you gonna bitch about not being able to play san andreas when you wanna and then pull this shit? if i don't get some of those fries," a reasonable amount of them goes without saying, "then you don't get to play your game."

no, it definitely wasn't the time. because right now? there's a giant swollen purple bruise on the behemoth beast that was his ego —— and it sort of matched the fresh collection of color scattered over his ribs when he reaches back to pull the compression tee clinging to him off by the back of his neck. a little tender after the adrenaline of playing had worn off; but the frustration and annoyance left him with enough of a buzz still to wholly ignore any real pain... ( because it's one thing to just lose a game. ) but it's another to lose two in a row, back to back, while feeling off his game for the last week. and tonight it's an overtime loss that had him hoisting her and her smart mouth over his shoulder with ease —— and his shirt was discarded to the floor while he now stood above her.

watching as she takes matters into her own hands, kindly makes things just a little easier on him, by tugging the pair of jeans down her hips before he finishes the job. or maybe she's just that fucking eager. ( he's thankful for it either way, ) but it's hard to tell by the look on his face... and he lets her drag him down to her level as his knees sink into mattress, hands find her hips —— fingers curling around the waistband of panties to drag them down too. no, it definitely hadn't been the time; and he's not wasting any more of it now.

stretched smile remained in place as she unwrapped her arms and moves to his side instead —— his own hand, the same one that had shooed her away, blindly reached out to briefly squeeze her hip. ( it's a silent greeting, ) because despite his words... he obviously didn't want them to leave ! the store, his side; lenny's company was always welcomed. especially when he's bored out of his goddamn mind during a shift dragging on and on. he glanced over at the cart beside him at their offer, a messy collection of handpicked dvds spread over the top of it. he'd grabbed a handful of favorites —— but can only pick three to replace his current selection every few weeks... which is kind of fucking evil, if you bothered asking him.

❛❛ for sure the hardest part of my day so far. ❜❜ never mind all the drills he did at training that morning... ( offseason didn't free him of that hell, unfortunately. ) the icee was lifted to his mouth again —— but he only chewed on the straw as he grabbed grind to balance it front facing on the metal rack. ❛❛ i was thinkin' the faculty. ❜❜ or little nicky... or the big lewboski... or remember the titans... or idle hands... the options splayed beside him felt endless.

lenny can't help but be sneaky on her feet, her sneakers barely making a noise on the shitty carpet of the blockbuster. ( though, it helps that hunter is totally in his own little world. ) the blonde's long legs carry them quickly as she stands on her tiptoes slightly, pressing her lips against his cheek. they can't help but giggle, her arms wrapping around his midsection as they rest their chin on his shoulder.

though, she'll let go of him whenever he starts to shoo her, long finger moving to poke at his side before she hops to his side, a soft hum leaving them. "busy? looks like you're just starin' at the shelf..." she'll snap her fingers. "ah, staff shelf! you havin' trouble picking your selection?" she'll turn to face him, raising an eyebrow.

in her defense... he had a bit of an advantage in here. years of experience in the sense that the funhouse was a favorite within his family —— two younger sisters that would force and drag him into the disorienting walls every season. ( he didn't bother mentioning the fact to rae, ) not when a bet was put into place; and he knew without a doubt that he could win. maybe it was a bit dishonest. maybe he's a bit of a sore loser and terribly competitive. but it's not outright lying just because it wasn't brought up— and it's definitely not considered cheating in his mind, and it's led him to be able to weave through halls with ease. able to ignore the distortions surrounding him with minimal stumbling or running into dead ends... but at least he was nice enough to not let himself get too far ahead and lose her completely.

when her voice finally rose above that horrible fucking looping soundtrack and reached him down the hall, ultimately calling out her surrender, he laughed again. ❛❛ you scared? ❜❜ though he didn't wait much longer before backtracking his steps and going back to find her through the flashing lights and mirrors. ( it's concentration and sheer determination, ) same thing that gets him through the end of tight games —— and his hand reached out to grab hers from its steady place against the wall once he was close enough. tugging and pulling her with him; back to where he had already been headed. ❛❛ you owe me a corndog. and funnel cake. ❜❜
