as someone who has followed you for years i realized that you’ve influenced my taste in music and film quite a lot and i wanted to thank you for helping me branch out into things i wouldn’t have otherwise. sounds silly but it made me curious on who the biggest influences in your life are in regards to your taste in media? is great taste made or are you born with it? much love,

My mom once talked to me about how leaving her old life behind to move to the states was an incredibly lonely and isolating time in her life— as is the life of many immigrants everywhere. She said before I was born and was there to keep her company, she’d spend hours on end alone while my dad worked and felt so empty that she’d cry and cry. Then my dad came home with a brand new tv and a dvd player one day and she combated her loneliness by watching a lot of movies. This kickstarted her love of film and it continued even after I was born. A lot of fond memories I have revolve around our mutual love for it. These are some of the movies I remember us watching over and over again. Some of these I took from her personal collection before I moved out. We loved Almodóvar and watched anything with Penelope Cruz and Gael Garcia Bernal because my mom had a huge crush on him. On the other hand, I think my dad influenced my taste in music more. He had extremely diverse taste. From Los Bukis, Caifanes, Vicente Fernandez, to Piero Piccioni, Nina Simone, Deftones, Modest Mouse, etc. Then when I was 13, an older cousin of mine moved in with us. He was a dj and my introduction into more experimental and electronic music as well as weird niche films. I also had a nanny that was about the age I am now who loved Frou Frou, Ivy, Massive Attack, Eurythmics, and Bjork. This was around the time I learned to burn cds and started discovering what I liked at the cost of giving our family computer so many viruses via limewire that my dad learned how to fix it himself. There’s undoubtedly people out there born with a je ne sais quoi and a natural eye for things but I’d say mine was definitely influenced pretty early on and wouldn’t be what is it today without them.

you are not a machine. you are more like a garden. you need different things on different days. a little sun today, a little less water tomorrow. you have fallow and fruitful seasons. it is not a design flaw. it is wiser than perpetual sameness. what does your garden need today?
