• Johnny is terrified of mirrors. After all the abuse from his parents, Johnny’s self-esteem took a huge hit. He stopped looking at himself years ago, convinced that if he could avoid seeing his reflection, maybe he could escape who he thought he had become. No one knows this except Ponyboy, who found out when he accidentally walked in on Johnny in the bathroom one day.

• Soda has an obsessive fear of being forgotten. After losing their parents, he developed a subconscious fear that he’d fade into the background, like no one would remember him. That’s why he’s always trying to keep things light, funny, and entertaining—he needs to be noticed and loved because, deep down, he’s terrified that if he stops being the "fun" one, people won’t care about him.

• Dally was in love once, for real. It was a girl he met in New York before he came to Tulsa, someone who made him feel like maybe he didn’t have to be the tough guy all the time. He doesn’t talk about her, not even to Johnny, but her name shows up on his tattoos—a faded, barely recognizable name on his arm that he never lets anyone see.

Adding on to that last one, Dally’s first love was a sweet new york girl, and she was the reason he became so bitter. She was the only girl who ever tried to get close to him, but she left him for someone else. It was the first time Dally let himself be vulnerable, and it completely shattered him. He’s been pushing everyone away since then because he’s convinced that love is just a trap.

• Steve is the only one in the gang who actually knows how to read and write cursive. His dad taught him when he was younger, before everything went to hell. Steve’s handwriting is elegant, almost beautiful, and sometimes he’ll secretly write letters to himself that he keeps hidden away. Nobody knows about them.

• Darry has a scar on his back from a car accident when he was 17. He doesn’t tell anyone because it reminds him of how out of control everything got, and how it was the night he knew life would never be the same.
