Cang Qiong Mountain Sect Disciple Jade Token Merch Concept --Scum Villain's Self Saving System--

This was originally designed for the Cang Qiong Archive Disciples Era Zine. Sadly it wasn't chosen as competition was fierce and the Scum Villain fandom is blessed by many truly talented artists. While my design wasn't picked, the artists on the project are really amazing so I'm very excited to see the zine and the merch when it eventually comes out.

However I still really love my concept and I wanted to share it. If anyone is interested I might consider doing my own small run of the item. If no one is interested, I might just make one for myself. So let me know in the comments if this is something you would conceivably want to buy. The design isnt fully finished and will probably have a few revisions.

--THE DESIGN --

My concept for this piece of merch was to make a jade token Yaopei (waist ornament) in the Jinbu style that is seen in Cultivation stories. I wanted something that could be both hung on a bag or a wall or even considered part of a cosplay. I love merch that bridges that gap between something cool to collect and something characters in the world could have owned. Its why I like prop-replicas.

While Scum Villain does not actually mention jade tokens specifically, they are used in MXTX's other work MDZS so their inclusion makes sense from a world building perspective. Jade tokens were often used to show someone's authority or right to be in a place so it would make sense that different disciples or members of different sects in scum villain would have their own type of token. I went with a round token design over a tablet as I thought it mimicked the ornaments seen in the belt designs from the official art.

My in-universe idea is that this would have been an item either given to senior disciples or head disciples to show their authority. So Shen Jiu, Liu Qingge, Mu Qingfang, etc would have had one before they became peak lords. When fans own it, it would mark everyone as part of the Cang Qiong disciple family, like all the fans belonging to the same sect kind of thing. It gives that sort of "community family" whomesome feel.

I looked at real jade token designs while coming up with the design, as seen under References, and went with a cloud theme as Cang Qiong translates as "Heavenly Dome". I looked at how clouds were drawn and carved in Ancient China and tried to create something that would fit. I did use the Calligraphy art of whoever made the Cang Qiong Archive logo, as my ability to do calligraphy of traditional chinese characters is exactly..... zero. If I did end up making this for sale I would want to reach out to them to get their permission as calligraphy is an artform and all artists deserve credit for their work. If I couldn't reach them I would probably find a different calligraphy artist willing to work with me to do their version of the characters and then use that. The characters are traditonal Hanzi, which I went with over modern Hanzi since it felt more fitting for the era and the calligraphy I referenced was already in traditional.

Materials wise I was considering acrylic, which while it wouldn't be super great for say a cosplay, would be hardy enough as a keychain and allow for a double sided design. I also considered enamel to make the charm metal, but it would come down to size and price and I believe acrylic is more affordable.

I went with a whiter "jade" color than the images referenced because whiter jade feels more "heavenly dome" than greener jades, which feel more "earthly".

Chengxian Hanahaki au but it’s JC realizing that the flowers that have been slowly killing him for nearly 16 years are finally subsiding as he gets closer to Mo Xuanyu. There’s a part of Jiang Cheng that wants to self sabotage, refusing to move on so he can keep this last piece of Wei Wuxian with him. If the flowers disappear, if Mo Xuanyu reciprocates his feelings, isn’t that no different than giving up his search? Finally admitting that Wei Wuxian is truly dead, and JC has nothing left of him but a flute and fading memories.

Meanwhile Wei Wuxian is bleeding out, trying to get JC to move on from whatever worthless scum refused to reciprocate his feelings. He places his heart on a platter, offering it up over and over again to a reluctant man, in the hopes that JC will finally bring himself to accept his feelings. Wei Wuxian could never be deserving of this, he’s caused too much pain for Jiang Cheng to ever love him again, but perhaps with the face of another man, without the weight of their shared hurt, he can finally find happiness at Jiang Cheng’s side.

The insufferable thing about QiJiu is that modern Shen Jiu would be the type to burst into the bathroom while Yue Qingyuan was shitting to show him the stupid shit that pissed him off on his phone. Look into your heart, you know this to be true.

Dashiell Hammett, who basically invented the noir genre (think: The Maltese Falcon, The Thin Man) hung out enough in the queer scene in San Francisco in the 20s-30s that he picked up some contemporary queer lingo that he folded into his stories. In The Maltese Falcon, there’s a scene where the wildly gay-coded villain shows up at a meeting with a skinny little blonde with a bad attitude and a gun in tow, and detective Sam Spade tells him to “leave the gunsel outside” — gunsel being contemporary gay slang for a young, effeminate man who probably bottoms (from the Yiddish gansl, meaning gosling). Basically, he’s saying “I’m here to talk to you, not your twink.”

However, a lot of writers mimicking Hammett did not know gay lingo or Yiddish, saw the word “gun,” and assumed “gunsel” meant “scary bodyguard with a gun.” They took off with a word they didn’t understand and spread it so fast that it’s now basically impossible to read a noir story written between 1930-1960 without someone accidentally being called a twink at least once. Look out for it next time you’re reading Raymond Chandler or his ilk, I guarantee you’ll find it.

The Qijiu pair to skinzun should be yqy as a xoloitzcuintli with a little tuff of a pompadour. They’re usually hairless, black, and always look concerned about the general state of things. Very YQY!!

One day, there’s a misunderstanding where MQF visits YQY during a ‘rut’. SJ finds out and assumes they’re mating, he gets PISSED. But when he walks in, YQY is straight chilling playing go or something and MQF explains awkwardly that YQY is totally chill during rut! A medical mystery!

BUT this means he can go disappear every three months when he needs a break and just chill and think about Xiao Jiu and be all snuggly. He’s spoiling himself but he doesn’t know how to spoil himself so he just… lays down and like, eats, for once. Rest is not really his thing usually but his ‘ruts’ are a rare exception.

It backfired. Yue Qingyuan, for the first time in decades, goes into heat.
