to facilitate me clearing out my followers, I’ve decided to juuuuuust archive this blog and copy everything over to a new one at 1110-01111011
this time I’m not interested in follows from personal blogs! thank you for respecting that! my notifs just get so cluttered and it makes my life complicated, so if personals follow this new blog I’ll be softblocking them, sorry

//I’m reconsidering my stance on letting personals follow me, mostly because half the time I check on my notifs from personals I find that they’re transphobic or anti-vaxxer or some other manner of person that I don’t want to be anywhere near
so give me a little bit to do some softblocking and then I’ll really be back
nothing personal to those of you that are cool, but I run this blog to do something I enjoy and I’m finding I’m not comfortable with how things are rn

“What do you mean, ninety-eight percent ?” he retorted almost instantly, mildly annoyed that Omega was aware that they’d been two percent off the mark and only spoke up now that the deed was done. Alas, his irritation couldn’t change that fact; the timer had gone down and it was time to confront the result of their little experiment. The robot was already all set to proceed, even. There was no point dwelling on it.
If anything, it was a bit of a reassurance to hear that they were so close to perfect accuracy. It might not come out perfect because of it, but surely two percent wouldn’t make the difference between a good snack and a popcorn bag blowing up in their faces.
      Right ?
Shadow waited out the few last lonely popping sounds, and listened closely for anything more telling as to the state of what the microwave contained. There was something very faint, which he guessed Omega couldn’t pick up on from where he stood - something halfway between the crackling of flaming wood and the sound of a bag deflating. It didn’t seem very threatening, but he was still careful to open the door. Nothing happened, still.
The strong smell of butter hit next, and one much more subtle of… burnt. Well, here’s to hoping that’s where the two percent goes, he thought, reaching for the bag. And he paid close attention to the additional instructions on how to open it not to get one’s hands prematurely steamed, and with that procedure out of the way, took a peek into the bag.
Tumblr media
It looked… mostly like it was supposed to. From his perspective, anyway. Thankfully, he had a much more critical eye for a companion. Shadow walked over to Omega, with the bag held out in front of him. “What do you think ?”
“BAG INSTRUCTION NUMBER TWO: PLACE BAG IN CENTER OF MICROWAVE. BAG WAS NOT PLACED WITH ONE HUNDRED PERCENT ACCURACY.” Omega’s comment lacked any judgmental emotion, as always, but at least his disinterest was genuine. He wouldn’t expect any organic life form to perform such a task perfectly. They did their best, he knew.
It didn’t matter now, anyways. Shadow had already started investigating the bag’s contents. Omega was pretty sure they’d gone too far in the instructions to place the it back into the microwave -- but he could sift through a few versions of instructions on the internet in the brief moments he was watching Shadow sniff the contents. That, and disarm his weapons.
He tipped forward to look inside the bag as Shadow offered it, his arm canon finally stowed away for good this time. Aside from the whirring of processors, he was silent for a moment.

//hi! I’m gonna talk about binary for a sec! this is okay to reblog since I’m aiming to pass on a little education with this one, but also this gets a bit mathematical so if you’re not into that then this may not be very interesting to you
so computers, at a base level, are written in binary, aka base 2. (there are actually ternary/base 3 computers as well, but like, why would you do that. modern computers are all binary.) base 2 means that the smallest unit of memory, a “bit”, can hold one of two values. relatedly, a “byte” is eight bits. I’m not incredibly educated on modern hardware, but as far as I’m aware the way this is usually stored is a simple switch that is either off or on. so, if you wanted to store 1110 in memory, you’d have four switches, three on and one off.
the way to read a single value in binary is through powers of 2. so let’s say you have 1110. it’s read like this:
      1                     1                     1                   0 2^3 = 8           2^2 = 4            2^1= 2           2^0 = 1
to explain, you start from the rightmost bit with 2 to the power of 0. if there’s a 1 in that bit, you add 2^0 to your total. then you move left, increasing the exponent of 2 by one each time. so in the next position, you have a 1 in the bit, which means you add 2^1 to your total. keep doing this until you have gone through every bit, and you should get:
0 +2^3 + 2^2 + 2^1 = 8 + 4 + 2 = 14
so the way to write 14 in binary is 1110. binary is truly just a system of representing numbers -- the way we usually write numbers is in decimal, or base 10. in hexadecimal, which is base 16, 14 is represented by the letter e! it’s all very interesting stuff, and you can write with a base of anything, but the most commonly used are binary, decimal, and hexadecimal.
now, the way binary is read is where this gets really complicated. as you probably know, computers use entire gigabytes and even terabytes of information. one gigabyte is  8,589,934,592‬ bits, so your computer is storing that many 1s and 0s all just in one big long string of numbers. this means that your computer has to know where to separate the individual chunks of data. you could have 01111011 stored in memory, but do you read it as 0111 1011, or 01 11 10 11, or 01111011?
for example, if I read that number in chunks of four, I’d have:
0 + 2^2 + 2^1 + 2^0 = 4 + 2 + 1 = 7 ; 2^3 + 0 + 2^1 + 2^0 = 8 + 2 + 1 = 11, so 7 and 11
and if I read it as chunks of two, I’d have:
0 + 2^0 = 1 ; 2^1 + 2^0 = 3 ; 2^1 + 0 = 2 ; 2^1 + 2^0 = 3, so 1 3 2 and 3
and if I read it as one big chunk of 8, I’d have:
0 + 2^6 + 2^5 + 2^4 + 2^3 + 0 + 2^1 + 2^0 = 64 + 32 + 16 + 8 + 2 + 1 = 123
how computers handle this is basically by... having an operating system. I’m not going to go into more depth about it, because frankly it’s a topic that I learned about because I had an entire college course devoted just to operating systems, but to summarize: the operating system decides how to parcel out those chunks of bits into readable data. you know how programs will sometimes have separate versions for 32-bit computers vs 64-bit computers? that’s because 32-bit computers store their memory in chunks of, you guessed it, 32 bits, while 64-bit computers... you get the idea.
so... I guess what I’m getting to here is that binary is a difficult and wily thing to grasp, much less read. it’s not a language, but rather a system by which to write numbers. the way that binary is “readable” in those text to binary translators you’ll find floating around is usually that each section of binary is displaying a single ascii value of a character (i.e. A is 65, B is 66, lowercase z is all the way up at 122).
the rp part of this is that, while omega would certainly be able to get the numerical values out of a chunk of binary someone put in front of him, it wouldn’t mean anything without knowing the framework with which to interpret it. you could give him binary that means 65, but is it an A or just 65? or should he be reading it as several numbers and not just one? it’s a complete mystery if he doesn’t know the memory writing system of whatever put that binary there. if you pre-establish that, you’re all set! anyone could definitely talk in binary if they had an agreed-upon system by which to interpret it. (though, why would you, it’s so tedious that we invented real programming languages just to avoid dealing with it.) but barring that, it really is just a big, unintelligible mess of numbers, and I can tell you omega here would just be a big ol ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ if you tried speaking to him in only 1s and 0s with no warning.

//somehow I acquired a frankly ridiculous amount of followers while I was gone, so here’s a couple reminders before I even think about sifting through them:
- I’m not rping with non-mutuals right now! I need to keep my activity down or I will not have time for this blog. if I don’t follow you back, please don’t be offended, I’m just trying to keep my time management in mind when choosing who I’m up to interact with
- chaosbcrne is my exclusive shadow atm and I’m not looking to rp with any other shadows, sorry! it’s just a matter of how much we’ve developed already and how rough it tends to be to just drop all that for a new interaction
- personals are ok for now, but if you spam me with likes or other notifs, or reblog my rps or headcanon posts, I will softblock! this blog is for my enjoyment and I don’t mind booting followers if they’re not willing to comply with the rules I’ve set to make myself comfortable with posting here

TWO HEADCANONS FOR YOUR MUSE THAT YOU’VE NEVER TOLD ANYONE :
1. omega has broken many household objects just on principle of... if rouge or shadow ask him to hand them something, he will, and whatever it is becomes immediately crunched in his hand if it’s not strong enough. nobody asks him to pass them things anymore, but just in case it’s useful he’s been working out the correct pressure to use to avoid breaking coffee mugs
2. the various green lights on him are leds, and could in theory be replaced with other colors, or even color changeable leds (and a little bit of editing to his wiring for the color control). so... rainbow omega could be real. let omega say gay rights
THREE THINGS YOUR CHARACTER LIKES DOING IN THEIR FREE TIME :
1. crushing badniks
2. videoing the rest of team dark doing stupid things
3. crushing eggman, but like, he doesn’t get to do it as often?
SEVEN PEOPLE THAT YOUR CHARACTER LIKES / LOVES :
1. shadow
2. rouge
--past this it’s just people he tolerates, in no particular order--
3. zero (he agreed to be a punching bag once so he’s ok... maybe)
4. sonic is friends with shadow, so,
5. tails by extension
6. big is alright
7. orbot and cubot can share because they’re both half allowed for being nonthreatening, half not allowed for being eggman bots
TWO THINGS YOUR CHARACTER REGRETS :
1. not crushing eggman when he had a chance in dark brotherhood -- especially given the ending that they’re assumedly returning to for the sequel that never happened
2. ngl he doesn’t do regrets a lot, he’s more of an in-the-moment kind of robot? but I could imagine he regrets minor decisions that end up leading to him getting damaged and etc, at least long enough to make note of it to prepare for future fights
TWO PHOBIAS YOUR CHARACTER HAS :
1. fear of being reprogrammed and having his body used as a weapon for other people’s purposes? is there a word for that
2. he’s not really set up for actual phobias, but you could say he has a fear of water on the basis of how he avoids it so he doesn’t just outright break when it gets inside his casing
tagged by: @chaosbcrne ages ago thank,
tagging: nobody because this is so old everyone probably did it months ago, but steal if you want!

//more robot versions of organic emotions:
- attachment - it’s actually pretty simple for omega to develop an attachment to people, once you get past how he doesn’t really like anyone right off the bat to begin with. it’s a bit tied in with his incentive system, which is just the thing that makes him feel “good” when he does stuff it’s set up to reward him for, and “bad” when he does stuff that it’s supposed to punish. for example, he gets rewarded for destroying targets, and punished for things like ignoring his sleep cycle for too long. a lot of stuff that can cause problems for his systems is included in the punishment area, and that includes overwriting his memory too often
and that’s relevant to this because learning to work with others means writing himself a lot of new subroutines. he doesn’t have infinite memory space, so saving every single one of those for everyone he’s ever met? not ideal. he’d like to ditch whichever of those end up being not useful, but he also has to determine which of those are worth ditching versus saving, and it’s a whole ordeal. conserving memory is honestly such a big matter of preference, and omega is motivated to not overwrite that data if possible because it’s just a lot of internal debate and lost energy. (it’s also possible that his memory is in a format where overwriting data a lot will cause corruption, but I’m inclined to believe he uses nicer stuff like solid state drives and the threat of corruption is minimal)
so, as an example, he’s spent a lot of time learning to understand the strengths and weaknesses of his team, and the amount of data he’s got on them is big incentive to keep working with them. also? they were really successful? so he’s been learning that these two other individuals are a big help to him and he should stick around them. there’s attachment on that level... and then, on an additional level, he has some emotions about how they treated him. eggman, the only person he was supposed to have any relation to, effectively locked him in a closet. and then these two not only appreciate his abilities enough to work with him as a team, they also care about his well being? this example is getting away from me but basically even within the limited range of things omega cares about, team dark manages to give him a lot of positive reasons to stay with them, so he is... attached
so he can develop attachment to anyone technically but again, you have to fit into that tiny middle area of the venn diagram between “appreciates his presence” and “gives him reasons to appreciate your presence” for him to actually pay attention to you and get that ball rolling. after that it’s a lot simpler as he’s rarely going to forget why he cares about you in the first place
- fear - it’s difficult to fit this particular emotion into an inorganic being. omega in particular has such a lack of fear because his capabilities include quickly adapting to new situations -- he’s predisposed to not panic about anything, really
even in potentially life-threatening situations, I have to imagine omega’s programming would spare no time for an emotional response... the closest he could get to something like that would be if he encountered a situation that fell too far out of every parameter he’s used to, because it would take time and energy to rework his programming to fit that and that’s sort of an approximation of panic
- anger - I may have gone over this before, but one way ai can work (and how I’m deciding it works in omega’s case) is that different actions and results are assigned inherent penalties or rewards in the ai’s programming, and the ai’s goal is to maximize rewards while minimizing penalties. in omega’s case, things like taking damage or injuring allies would be assigned penalties, and things like crunching badniks or successfully shooting targets would be assigned rewards. this is an entirely internal system that means nothing to anyone who’s not the ai
obviously, accruing these rewards would make omega satisfied. so then accruing penalties would make him unhappy, and things that cause him to accrue those penalties would start getting registered as very bad avoid or destroy etc, mostly destroy
so that’s how you incur omega’s wrath, and it’s still a fairly unemotional reaction, if you consider being so opposed to something that you allocate extra resources to destroying it before it can bother you unemotional
