Ciao! Welcome to my blog about what I do, see, and eat while I spend the next 111 days “studying”across the globe. Expect a lot of gelato and wine…

Rode a Vespa! Funny story so I didn't realize I would need my drivers license and was almost unable to drive, then I was allowed but didn't get enough practice so I was told I didn't have good balance and the instructor needed to ride with me. At first I was kinda bummed out but he gave me a private tour while we rode and I learned how to ride with no hands AND how to switch from the back seat to the front seat without stopping and best of all, Lizzie McGuire rode on a Vespa with an Italian boy in Rome and I did it in Tuscany while he sang "that's amore" to me. So to those who laughed at me when I was told I couldn't ride alone.... HA!

Day 100
Can you believe it? Neither can I. First of all, shout out to Michael on his 23rd birthday (you can venmo me if you want to). It’s been the most adventurous 100 days of my entire life and I am so sad that the semester is almost over. I’m remembering my first posts and first few days here and finding it incredible how a place that was so new to me only four months ago is a place that I consider home now. My apartment is sandwiched evenly between the Santa Croce and the Arno and only a street away from my favorite panini shop, the Ponte Vecchio, and not far from Piazza Michelangelo. Besides the few quirks with my apartment, I couldn’t have asked for a better location in Florence. While I won’t miss the American karaoke bar that plays music until 4 am across the street or the times when the water completely shut off during my showers, I’m going to be sad to leave this place in 11 days. My friends and I have been going over our favorite memories of the semester and favorite places so I figured I’d share a few. A favorite time or memory that sticks out to me overall is a dinner a group of friends and I had in Rome back in February. It was the first time we ordered the way Italians should order (except I think Italians would say we ordered wine like Americans… those drunks!). While the service was horrible, it was a dinner filled with laughs and stories and was all around an amazing time in an incredible city. Though I still have a Barcelona coming up this weekend, my favorite place (outside of Italy obviously, because nothing beats Italy) is Amsterdam. Amsterdam was easily my favorite city and was definitely a place I wish I could have spent a few more days in. Part of this reason might have been because it was so perfectly planned out and I was always doing something. We rented bikes, which was awesome. If you ever end up in Amsterdam, that is something you MUST do. All of the locals do it, so you’ll fit right in. There are bikes locked up on every street lamp and every bridge and I believe there’s a statistic that says there are more bikes than people living there. There’s another statistic about how many bikes are pulled out of the canal every month because they fell in. I don’t remember exactly how many, but a shocking amount. I also waited in line to see the Anne Frank house, something I am very glad I saw and shivered in line for three hours for. It’s definitely a little eerie, but it’s eye-opening. I also visited the Heineken Brewery, which to be quite honest wasn’t too worth it but I wouldn’t say I regretted it— just a little over touristy. But hey, they gave you beers at the end. i also loved the history of the city. We learned SO much about the how the laws were developed (Red Light District and “legalized” marijuana). Just so you all know, weed isn’t technically legal there, but the police turn a blind eye so it might as well be. OH, and the Stroop Waffles. Yep, that’s what made it my favorite. Okay so that was my favorite city, but the most beautiful place? That’d have to be Switzerland. It’s hard to compare because it is so different, but try to picture blue gatorade filling up an entire lake and mountains that look like they were painted onto the sky. And I was lucky enough to see it from the streets, from a kayak on the lake, and from jumping off a mountain! I even saw it sledding down the mountain at night. That was one of the most adventurous weekends of my life and I would pay the rest of my money (which isn’t saying much after this semester) to go back there and do it all over again. Plus, the chocolate was out of this world. Favorite meal? I get that question a lot. That’s definitely not an easy question to answer but I can narrow my favorite pizza down to SimBIOsi in Florence and my favorite pasta dish was probably a farfalle and swordfish dish from Acqua al 2. But you see, Il Gatto e La Volpe had the best bread and balsamic. Ooo, and Trattoria ZaZa had a house white that sticks out. And then of course there’s the Bistecca alla Florentine that my parents treated me too…. You see? Not easy. But it’s not about the food, it’s the company. So in that case, I’d say the dinner I had in Sorrento when mom and dad came was one of my favorites. That’s the time when mom made it a little too obvious we were Americans by asking for parmesan cheese on her seafood pasta. No, no, they don’t do that here. You’ll only get parmesan served with your pasta if you order pesto (Another great meal— Pesto pasta in Cinque Terre. Pesto was invested here so that’s all I need to say about that). Hmm, and one time Kim, my friend from home who I took a trip to Vienna with, ate instant soup in the hostel to save money and warm up after a long day walking in the rain. See, you can get a favorite meal for less than one euro! And then there’s All’Antico Vinaio, only the best panini place in the world and there’s Gelato de Neri— yup you guessed it. Unfortunately, it took about 3 and a half months to find the perfect flavor combination of Stracciatella and Bacio. Wish I discovered that earlier but I can’t say I didn’t enjoy the trial and error process. I’ve been asked what my favorite place in Italy was, and that’s a hard one. I don’t know if I could choose. I adored Burano, an island off of Venice and I thought Assisi and Perugia were absolutely incredible as well. Again, this is excluding Florence because Florence is the best place in the world and nothing will ever top this. So sorry folks, there’s no answer for this one. If I were to go back four months in time and do this again, I would do it the exact same way. Definitely, 100% study in Florence and travel around Italy as well as the rest of Europe and I would spend the Spring Break city hopping. It was truly incredible to see three countries in 10 days. That being said, if I were to spend my next semester abroad, I would study in Spain. I’d choose Spain because similarly to Italy, Spain is a country that has a ton of places to see within itself. I would probably choose Seville (a place I’m very, very sad I didn’t get to see this semester) and take day or weekend trips to Valencia, Granata, Cordoba, Barcelona and Madrid. This time, I’d spring break in a place like Greece and chill on the sand for a week. That’s another place I need to visit. Maybe my honeymoon…….. I’ve learned a lot from this semester. A lot of that is how to travel successfully (another trial and error system that took too long to accomplish). So Michael, now that I have successfully traveled around Europe and I’m still alive and well, you can no longer make fun of me for now knowing how to get to Wawa from our house. I’ve also learned how to cook like Italians, thanks to my cooking class instructors who taught me that a pinch of salt is more like a handful and a sliver of butter is the whole block of butter. Now I know why this food tastes so damn good… So, I’ll be home in less than two weeks. It makes me sad to leave but if it didn’t, that would mean the semester wasn’t as incredible as it was, so don’t take it personally, Mom. I’m going to miss my cappuccinos, but at the same time WOW will it be amazing to be able to brew a large cup of hazelnut coffee from my own Keurig machine. And it’ll feel just as amazing to use a microwave and a dryer again. Oh, the things you take for granted. I miss all of you back home and I can finally say that I will be seeing you very, very soon… Ciao!
