Haddie could hear the resentment in his voice and made a note of it. “Well, losing just means they’re not smart, doesn’t necessarily mean their idiots.” She stared at the white chalk words on the board and frowned. “I mean seriously, ‘You see an old lady at a crossroads, do you a. help her across, b. push her in front of a wagon, or c. steal her soul.’ A baby could answer that question correctly.”

She frowned and twisted the ring on her finger. “My fate is my own,” she said, so sure of her words.

There was no question to it. She wouldn’t let anyone control what her future held. She had goals, she had a kingdom to get back to, a job to do. She wouldn’t let prejudice or her father get in her way.

“I’m going places,” she told him, voice dipping into a whisper as the FG started her lecture. “I’m not letting my family get in the way of that, or whatever legacy he left me.”

“Same thing, same thing.” He scoffs. “I’d push her in front of a wagon. As much as I’d like to steal her soul, I don’t have the magic for it.” There’s a smile on his face as he stares at the FG, imagining her to be the old woman. God, she annoyed him so much. The FG was a little too optimistic for his liking, it was toxic. Though sometimes she was dense enough to not be able to catch him out on a lie, so that was one good thing.

Haakon turns to look at her as she fidgets with the ring, one side of his lips curls up with amusement, “That’s cute.” He says, though he himself refuses to be shaped by his father so in some way, they were the same when it came to deciding their own fate.

“What do you intend to be then? One of the goodies?”
