Conclusion
To conclude the project, I will be evaluating how much of the learning target I have achieved and how much of a gap I have left to improve.
I’d like to further manifest my 3D skills and motion graphic skills in terms of creating realistic illusions, to make something that isn’t really there look like it is something tangible. I will also like to learn how to track people in real time using a Kinect sensor in order to create interactivity. In order to do use the tracking done by the Kinect, I would also learn to use Touchdesigner to be able to code a way to get the person’s mask in real time in order to achieve a real time rendered projection mapping of a person. My area of interest lies within experiential, interactive and experimental design thus I decided to begin with getting to know projection mapping. I will learn physical computing and interactive design in order to achieve the learning target. In particular, the main outcome is that I want to achieve being able to do projection mapping on any person at any time. It will also allow me to achieve an experimental outcome with the mixing of multiple mediums.
As seen from the direct quote from my learning plan, I did not achieve much of what I intended. I did not feel like my 3D skills have improved, but I have definitely learnt a lot more. In terms of motion graphics, I feel like I have improved in terms of pacing and timing as well as properly utilising compositing softwares like Premiere Pro and After Effects. I’m not very sure if I achieved to create ‘realistic illusions’, though I did learn more about lighting within 3D space.
I feel like I achieved being able to track users in real time but not so much on the interactivity aspect. Though I definitely learnt a lot on the software, Touchdesigner and it’s advantages. I feel like it is an asset to have gained the knowledge about this software as it will be useful in the future.
Also, I don’t feel like I have learnt much on projection mapping since I didn’t get to play around with using the user’s silhouette. Thus, I did not achieve my main target.
Even so, I have gained more knowledge in terms of motion detection and physical computing as well as improving my motion graphic skills, albeit not the 3D aspect of things. Though, this project has gotten me quite interested in the Mandlebulb3D software and will experiment with it further. In future projects, the gathered knowledge and experience will improve my abilities.

Trials & Tribulations
Due to:
Not being familiar with the working scheme of projection mapping and,
Not predicting the possible problems,
I wasn’t able to achieve my envisioned idea.
In order for the user to have an immersed experience I wanted them to be able to see themselves through the visuals and how it interacts the user’s silhouette. Thus, I decided to use a mirror for users to be able to themselves. Though this idea was added rather last minute and I did not propose this within my project proposal. Even so, in the end the mirror was not available for use unless I moved my project to another floor where the mirror is located. It was impossible to do so as it was:
A public area,
Too wide and opened space with not enough plug units,
And there was no where to mount the projector.
Another problem I faced was that there was no proper way to mount the projector on the ceiling at an angle that can be projected down to the user’s feet. Thus I had to place the projector on the floor, but by doing so it blinds the users and they instead have to face the screen.
Thus from the body mask projection being the main focus it has changed into the background serving the main purpose.
Another trial I faced was a personal one. I have not been the most productive as I could have been and constantly felt tired and demotivated. My time management was in a disarray and is one of the core issues I face personally in life as well as creatively. Due to my poor self-discipline and weak will, I could not finish up the project. The 2 minutes and 35 seconds has then been cut to 1 minute and 30 seconds what with two sections being cut from the final outcome.
On the other hand, on the day of the final presentation, I misplaced my narration file and thus I had to rush to redo my narration with a phone mic rather than the original narration that was done with a proper microphone. Also, during the presentation, due to the darkness, someone tripped over a wire causing the Kinect sensor to malfunction but even so, I managed to fix it in time. Though it is good to put it in mind to protect the wiring from such incidents in the future.

Test Runs and Technical Difficulties #4: A/B Test
Final Test
The final test included a pre-scene idle animation so when there is a user detected, the main video will be triggered to start.
I encountered several technical difficulties from this test:
The speaker keeps turning off on it’s own.
Detected silhouette somehow became more congested and the head is no longer detected no matter how much I tried to arrange it.
The pre-scene triggering took some time to figure out but in the end I still couldn't find a way for the main video to only begin after being triggered.
As of now, the main video keeps playing even when hidden. So once the user is detected the video starts in random places instead of beginning from the start of the video.
A/B Testing
Unfortunately I was unable to do a proper A/B testing on my project due to the difficulty of finding minors for user testing as well as the current circumstance of the COVID19 virus quarantine it is not suitable for any visitors. Even so, I have managed to receive some comments from my peer group and made some observations on how these users interact with the project.
Comments
Changing the silhouette colour to be more visible
More visual context so users as it seems too abstract
In contrary, my peers considered the abstractness of the project to be fitting within a museum environment
Though, the users do not really pay attention to the auditory aspects and only the visuals so visual context should be more emphasised.
They also felt that the sizing of the screen seemed like it doesn’t fit right.
Observations
Even without telling them to, the users faced the screen rather than the projector.
Users are pleasantly surprised over seeing their silhouettes

Test Runs and Technical Difficulties #2
Third Test
For the third test, I had my first animated section be tested for the body mask
I used both the Kinect and projector together for the first time
Kinect detects the body but somehow the tracked silhouette does not align to the body and skews to the side.
I had a user test to see if it was better for the user to face forward or backwards
In the end I chose for the users to face the screen since the projector is blinding them if they faced towards it and also there a mirror is not available to use for them to see the visuals.
I taped markers on the floor to indicate the place users where users should stand for the best experience and where the kinect should be placed for an ideal alignment

Test Runs and Technical Difficulties #1
First Test
My first test I used the mandlebulb test video as the background and another video masked onto a 2D silhouette rather than using the person themself because I couldn’t access my Kinect yet as I was waiting for the arrival of the Kinect to PC adapter.
Mostly just testing the masking feature on touchdesigner
As it was my first time with both Touchdesigner and the projector I spent most of the time trying to figure out their functionality.
Found out that there was no ceiling projector mount in my selected venue (IIS Lab)
Projecting it from the floor hurts the user’s eye
The venue space wasn’t wide enough and quite congested.
Second Test
In my second test I utilised my Kinect to check if it could mask a user properly
I tried using infrared or just the normal camera mode and I found the player index mode masks and detects the user
But player index mode was severely pixelated

Software Experimentation: Mandelbulb 3D
What I’ve found by experimenting with this software is that it revolves around mathematical formulas and parameters to create this animation thus there is a lot of guesswork needed for non-mathematician to utilise this software. Though, a lot who uses this software are just artists trying to experiment as well. As it is seen here, the results are very boxy and not exactly the more rounded kaleidoscope look that is in my reference. Thus, I’ll have to do more experimenting in order to achieve the visual content I have in mind.
I rendered 15 seconds of animation which took around 2 hours so when rendering the real outcome, it will take less than a day to render it out.

Scripting & Storyboard
Script
The first script was a draft written but without the thought of the rhythm of the visual content and of how it’d sound out loud. Thus I wrote the second script to make it more easier to visualise but this script was too long so I shortened it to ‘Script #3′ but after some feedback on some aspects of the script I scrapped and added some parts.
Who Are You, Really?
The Process of Individuation: The Four Major Jungian Archetypes.
Script choice #1
There reaches a time in our lives when we start questioning everything around us. The day we realise that our childlike innocence is real and truly gone. That we’re just going through the motions of life, rather than actually living it. We start noticing the fallibility of our peers, our family and most of all, ourselves. When this revelation comes, it comes unconsciously, something you may have wished you didn't come to realize. Though something once noticed, can not continue to be unnoticed. Like a mist clearing, we start to question: Am I really me? Do I have actually have a personality? Am I my own individual? Or am I just playing a role? We start to doubt who we really are. So, Who are you really? You are you. What you're going through is perfectly normal. It's something that a lot of people went through as a teenager. It is a period of time that makes you feel lost, it makes you feel overwhelmed. This is your first step into the process of self-realization. In order to understand yourself and your individuality, you must first achieve self-awareness and the need to achieve your full potential. The understanding of your true self, what makes you your own individual. This can be explained through the theory of individuation by Carl Jung and the four major Jungian archetypes, persona, shadow, anima animus and the true self.
Being in an environment so closely packed with teenagers like you, you are going to be judged, for what you wear, what you say, what you do, every move you make will be judged by the people around you. So you keep your true self closed up and instead you wear a mask, a facade, a persona. Persona: a facade you wear in front of the public eye. Though if you wear it too long you lose sight of who you actually are.
Script choice #2 (3m30s)
In order to come to understand all of what the world is to serve, you must first throw and fight away all of what you have once known. As an adolescent you’ve only seen within a limited world view, a world through rose-tinted glasses, the picture of innocence and naivety. Just beginning to adventure into the world beyond. Though due to puberty’s hormonal fluctuations (source that), you begin to feel more intensely. You question your peers, your family and most of all, you question your identity. Are you your own individual? Or are you just playing an assigned role and going through the motions? You experience the need to know who you really are. To find your true self. It is the beginning of the process of finding for your individuality, the you inside of you.
Being in a school environment as a teenager, you feel as if you are going to be judged with every move you make. For what you wear, what you say, what you do, they will be judged by the people around you. So you keep your true self close to your chest and never too close to the surface. You instead, wear a mask, a facade, a persona. Playing a role for your peers to see so they can’t hurt you since after all, they won’t even know the real you. It may even get to the point where you have been your persona for so long you forget who you once were. Breaking through this facade to be true to your self, and learning to be uncaring of other’s opinions will be a difficult and emotional affair but know that this is just the first step to finding your ‘True Self’. Dropping the facade is something that many have gone through in their lives, and may be going through it right now, and some of which may be the friends that you thought you knew, just like they thought of you.
This is the archetype of which is known as the dark part of an individual’s psyche. The part that feels desire, aggression and other feelings and thoughts that you would prefer to suppress as it is seen to be ‘disgusting’ or ‘uncivilised’. To continue in your process to find yourself, you must first accept your desires and aggression as part of who you are rather than to suppress them. They are not something to be ashamed of, they can be accepted and acknowledged. This will strengthen your will to not be insecure of other’s judgement. In turn, you will become all the better because of it.
The ‘Anima’ and ‘Animus’ symbolises the masculinity and femininity within one individual, with the ‘Animus’ representing masculinity and ‘Anima’ representing femininity. Be free from the restrictive gender norms made by society’s need to conform. Accept all parts of yourself. Thus, through this process you reform your previous thinkings and remove the constraints society has put upon you and finally you achieve your ‘True Self’.
Script Choice #3 (2min 2s)
As an adolescent, you are the picture of innocence and naivety. Just beginning to adventure into the world beyond. As you reach a certain age, you realise that the world beyond isn’t as bright as you once thought it was. You feel like over the years you have slowly lost sight on who you are, or perhaps you were never your own person. Truth is, who you are is a development through stages. Through archetypes. This is your process of individuation. (31s)
Persona: The world is your stage. You play a role for your peers to see because if you do, they are unable to hurt you. After all, they won’t even know the real you. They can’t judge you for what you wear, what you say, what you do. Be careful though, because you may get to the point where you have been your persona for so long you won’t even remember you were wearing a mask. (26s)
Shadow: Desires, aggression, weaknesses. These are all parts of yourself you suppress because it seems ‘disgusting’ or ‘shameful’. These parts are so deeply suppressed, you have considered it the ‘dark’ side of you. (19s)
Anima & Animus: Boys mustn't cry, girls must look pretty. Boys can’t like pink because that's too ‘girly’, girls can’t be tough or no boys would like them. How many times have you heard that in your life? The ‘Anima’ & ‘Animus’ represent the suppressed ‘feminine’ and ‘masculine’ parts of your identity that society says just doesn’t fit. (26s)
In every step forward to learning who you can really be, you develop your individuality as you go. By accepting all parts of yourself and working through the previous archetypes, you reform your previous thinkings, removing the constraints society has put upon you and finally, you achieve your ‘True Self’. (20s)
Finalised Script (2min 35s)

Target Audience Research
The target audience I’ve chosen are Switzerland students aged between 13 to 17. I chose Switzerland in particular due to the exhibition of Carl Jung being within that country. As Carl Jung himself is from Switzerland. Though why I chose them to be between this age range is for a few reasons. Schools tend to provide educational field trips to museums, which brings the most likely audience for the exhibition to be students. Though I feel that they will relate to the content of this project due to this age range being the most erratic of one’s hormonal period, making them question their self worth.
There is also the fact that between 13-17, students are likely to engage in behaviours such as bullying and playing ‘nice’ while talking behind their backs. As with so, teenagers will feel a sudden overwhelming sense of insecurity and the need to be liked by everyone to appease their self-worth.
Through research on Switzerland’s education system, I have found that the system works in a way where students are provided with multiple schooling pathways after Primary. With this, it means that they are unlikely to be in the same school as their friends from Primary. There is also the fact that many are looking to enter the most prestigious pathway: ‘Gymnasium’. A pathway in which only a small amount of students manage to pass their entrance exams. It is by far the most difficult route but also the quickest one-way road to entering University. Since everyone is hoping to enter this pathway, that means there will be a lot of self doubt and disappointment when it is revealed they didn’t pass the test (Swiss Public School: The Path to Long Gymnasium, 2019).
Thus in conclusion, what I’ve found is 13 would be the most tender age for most of them and throughout the years will handle a lot of stress by the workload of their respective pathways, most particularly the ones in Gymnasium. Therefore, due to going through such a tumultuous time where they lose friends they’d been with since Kindergarten, and the stress of their new educational pathway, they’d be more likely to relate to a content when they are feeling so lost and overwhelmed with themselves.

Software Comparison: Processing.js and Touchdesigner
In order to produce my project to the best of my abilities, I needed a software that has projection mapping abilities as well as Kinect sensor compatible. I have narrowed it down to two softwares: Processing.js, an open source javascript coding language that will allow the user to generate visual content through code and popularly used with creators who want to make visual based content with human tracking (source this). Touchdesigner, a node based program usually used by the creative community for creating installations, projection mapping and the like (source this). Thus I compared to pros and cons of these two programs within the table below.

As seen above, a more user friendly software would be Touchdesigner due to it having a node based user interface and have functions that can be found in a click of a button rather than writing several line of code. Though the resolution will have to be capped at 1280x720, not even at least a 1080p. Though in order to complete things within the given time frame for the assignment, it is wiser to go with Touchdesigner.

Idea Conception
An unfiltered documentation of my thought process
Idea Brainstorming
To make a story
Must have something to do with shifting for tomorrow.
Fairy tale ?
Alice in wonderland ?
Dollhouse tells the story of those living in the house
Empowerment: youre unique youre special you have the power.
What its like to be a bookworm ( we live within the books so it shows all the genres and how big the world of books are )
Mirror of erised
Music interactive installation ( maybe people can choose their own music ?)
Like a plug in your phone choose a song and its interactive
Music video of sorts ? (lessons mxmtoon, chosen family rina sawayama, through the eyes of a child aurora)
‘I know of all the things you call me’ typography person
Key to the soul. Key is the heart. It pulses in the persons chest then zooms out to the entire canvas
Medium Ideation
Something Surreal
Non euclidean
Projection Mapping (either just a video or interactive)
Staircase
Room
Id like to try making typography stuff with this
Just on the wall and a bit on the floor
The wall is interactive and the floor is for illusion
Or just a video thing
Just floor
Piano tiles kinda thing
Dollhouse
Person
Can do something like heart pulsing effect etc.
bookcase/ book shape
VR
Escape game
Villains are mental illnesses
The vr lift idea
Open GL for coding
Music controlled experiential
Kinect sensor
People interactivity
Infrared signal
Depth map
Hands particles ( like magic powers )
Moving it around is like elsa
Make it AR if not possible
Focused Medium Choices ( Considering the limitations )
Projection mapping seems pretty interesting but also seems like it needs a lot of technical work and skills that i dont have
Also no projector
Also projector might not be bright enough
And if i accidentally move the projector itll mess up the mapping
I do have a kinect sensor tho
I could do an easier flat 2d surface ? if stairs/room is too difficult idk
VR or 360 panoramic view can be done as I have enough skills in 3d to do it though not much in terms of game development.
It can imitate reality so if projection mapping cant work i could imitate it instead with vr
And also 360 so
Finalising the Idea (Without Revision)
Interactive projection film: The story of the Self
Using psychological theories and ‘acts’ or ‘chapters’ to the story.
Journey of self realization, individuation (Jung theory). “The bird fights its way out of the egg. The egg is the world. Who would be born must first destroy a world. The bird flies to God. That God's name is Abraxas.” demian hermann heese inspired by jung theory.
Tarot major arcana as chapters
since this story revolves around symbolisms, spirituality and self discovery, I could instead use some of the tarot major arcana cards to act as the title of each chapter/act.
Act I: The Fool (beginning)
Act II: The Tower (Persona)
Act III: The Devil (Shadow)
Act IV: The Lovers (Animus/Anima)
Act V: The World (True Self)
It first starts with a blank projection. (could be a projection of depth like an empty room ) Then when the person walks in it starts the film. The user sees a key in their silhouette chest on the wall. The key seems to represent the heart. You hear a pulsing sound along with seeing the key pulse. The more it pulses the bigger it gets. When it becomes noticeably big, it stops pulsing and but gets biggers faster until the user is enveloped within the key.
Confirmed Idea
Projection mapping installation by using the user as a canvas
Info film about carl jung’s jungian theory as main piece for carl jung exhibit
Carl Jung is a famous psychologist
Usually psychology and other science fields dont use creative ways to convey and visualise their theories. So this piece is to use new media ways to introduce/convey the jungian theory. It will allow those who already know the theory to see it told in a more interactive and modern way. And for those completely new to it to be introduced to it in a more fun way than through a textbook.
To reach this point I combined some of my brainstorming ideas together such as creating a story, empowerment and the key to the soul, key is the heart idea. I actually circled my ideas based on the focus of the ‘Shifters of tomorrow’ brief, thus most of my ideas relation to the betterment of the self, and finding our true potential.

Design Research
In order to implement my concept, I find that using the person themselves as the medium is what will communicated the story best. I will use projection mapping along with with a Kinect sensor to detect the person and allow the person to interact with the projection, which on its own will surround itself around the person with it’s story. Thus, the person will become the main character of the story. I mainly want my story to have a surrealistic quality to it, thus I’ve found inspiration in a project called ‘BOX’ (GMUNK and BOT & DOLLY, 2013).
youtube
It was what inspired my choice to go with projection mapping as my project’s route. I really liked how they managed to project depth through optical illusion art and it is something I would also aim to do. As I’m going for a surreal concept, I feel that optical illusion art elements will integrate well to the story.
Another project that inspired the direction of my own project is NOTA BENE’s interactive typography installation ‘IN ORDER TO CONTROL’ (2015). I found the use of human interaction to tell their story very fascinating and useful to my cause. From what I analysed, they used a Kinect sensor for tracking the person and used two projectors, one facing the floor, another facing the wall. I’m unsure what software they used to code the interactivity of this installation but further research into the topic will allow me to do something similar with the large amount of open source softwares available.
youtube
Within this music video, the director decided to go with the usage of projection mapping to tell the song’s story. I found the usage of typography and perspective interesting and it inspires me to experiment with how kinetic typography will interact when upon a real life medium as well as how it can appear two dimensional and flat even though on a 3d surface. (Big Hit Labels, 2018)
vimeo
In the search for surrealistic elements, I wanted to utilise fractal art as one of the components in my design, thus I remembered Doctor Strange’s very kaleidoscopic, fractal elements, which I found is called the mandelbulb/mandelbrot, a 3 dimensional fractal. (Luma Pictures, 2017)
youtube
In my pursuit to research how the mandelbulb fractals are used, I found this video by Theo Kerr (2019) which showed the usage of animating mandelbulbs along with other mediums and how it is composited, but most importantly the animation of the view within a mandelbulb, something I would like to venture more towards.

Concept Research
So what I’m doing here is that i want to tell the story of the Self. In particular, the story of self realisation. Thus, I read up some theories from philosophers and psychologists and first found the theory of self actualisation by Abraham Maslow. He portrays the process to self actualisation as a hierarchy. While this gave me the a step forward to what I’m trying to find, it was not exactly what I needed and so I searched for theories related to Maslow’s theory and found Carl Jung’s theory on individuation. The process of finding the ‘True Self’. His theory’s concept is that all humans do not begin with a blank slate but we are all fundamentally built with ‘archetypes’ (The Psychology Book, 2012). While he depicts that there are several archetypes. I shall only focus on the major four Jungian archetypes (Gans, 2019) as they are the ones that mostly represents the stages of individuation (Jefferey, n.d.).
There is first the ‘Persona’ archetype. The facade we show to the public eye. To act as society allows us to be (The Psychology Book, 2012). Next would be the ‘Shadow’ archetype. It is known as the dark part of an individual’s psyche. The part that feels desire, aggression and other feelings and thoughts (Gans, 2019) that people would prefer to suppress as it is seen to be ‘distasteful’ or ‘uncouth’. Then there is the ‘Anima/Animus’, symbolising the masculinity and femininity within one individual, with the ‘Animus’ representing masculinity and ‘Anima’ representing femininity. Finally, the ‘True Self’ archetype. This is the archetype that Jung claims, when fully realised, the individual will then achieve ‘self realisation’ (The Psychology Book, 2012). What these four archetypes mean to the route to individuation, was something I further understood after reading ‘Demian’ by Hermann Hesse. The book revolves around the Jungian theory of self realisation and it tells the story of the character Sinclair’s discovery of individuation. Within the book, I found a quote that conveys the meaning of self realisation well.
“The bird fights its way out of the egg. The egg is the world. Who would be born must first destroy a world. The bird flies to God. That God's name is Abraxas.” (Hesse, 1923).
Abraxas is a Gnostic God that in the book, represents not only all that is holy, but also of all that is wretched. My own implementation of this quote would be that in order to come to understand all of what the world is to serve, you must first throw and fight away all of what you have once known. As an adolescent you’ve only seen within a limited world view, a world through rose tinted glasses, and so who your identity at this point of time is quite similar to the meaning of the tarot card: ’The Fool’, the picture of innocence and naivety, just beginning to adventure the world beyond. Though once you reach your teen years, you begin to question your identity, the need to know who you really are. This is the stage you assume that all you are is your ‘Persona’. Thus the start to searching for your individuality, your ‘True Self’. In order to get to that point you must first come to accept your ‘Shadow’. To understand and accept your desires and aggression rather than to suppress them. After doing so, you must be able to accept both your ‘Animus’ and ‘Anima’, allow yourself to be free from forced gender norms made by the society’s need to conform. Thus, through this process you are ‘fighting your way out of the egg’ by reforming your previous thinkings and removing the constraints society has put upon you and finally achieve finding your ‘True Self’.
