The Soldier's Refuge

William Schofield has always been able to see the spirits of the dead. He thought this strange ability of his would in some way inoculate him against the horrors of life on the front lines, but nothing could have prepared him for the endless misery of warfare. Now, two years into his stint as a soldier, he meets a strange French civilian while trapped in the town of Ecoust - a violinist who seems to collect ghosts wherever he goes. The man frightens Schofield, but he's offering something irresistible: freedom. Freedom from the war, freedom from his own haunted psyche.
Meanwhile, Thomas Blake makes it to the Devons to call off the deadly attack but loses Schofield in the process. Weeks later, there's still no sign of him - Missing, presumed dead. Blake can't believe that though, and so he returns to Ecoust to search for his missing friend.
