i used google translate on this one in general, pearl's gem cracked and after she was puffed, she couldn't reform back for a long time she was lucky that her gem fell into some cave pit where she was able to avoid the diamond beam

because of this crack, she couldn't reform normally and with great difficulty restored her appearance knowing that rose's abilities could heal her

but for some reason rose's heal didn't work and pearl will remain in this form until all four diamonds use their miracle cure

she can't talk, when she cries her tears are in the form of glitched things, she can't use her gem so her weapons are two swords

garnet and amethyst were initially uncomfortable around pearl, but over time they began to sympathize more as they slowly got used to her appearance

pearl is not allowed on missions for fear that if she is puffed, she will again get stuck reforming for a long time (idk)

“What the hell was that.”

Gwen, who was in the middle of getting sewn up by an expressionless Otomo, did not have the patience to respond politely.

“I think the words you’re looking for are ‘thanks for saving my life, Gwen’,” she snarled. “And you’re welcome, you bastard.”

“The words I’m looking for are too NC-17 for your teenage ears,” Murdock sneered right back. “I told you to leave.”

Gwen rolled her eyes.

“Oh, was that an order? I thought it was a friendly suggestion.” The pinch of the needle intensified. “Ow!”

Otomo’s eyes flicked up to Gwen.

“I’ll be more careful,” he told her neutrally enough that she was pretty sure he was pissed off too.

Well, of course he was. God forbid she disobey orders, even if they were stupid. Otomo was all about that respecting your superiors crap. That just annoyed Gwen more, though. She’d saved Murdock! They should both be grateful to her! It was just her luck that being a big damn hero only got her scolded like a kid who’d broken curfew. She sat through the remaining five stitches, silent but simmering with resentment.

Once Otomo had finished bandaging her side and stepped away, the hem of Gwen's borrowed shirt fell back down to cover the injury. Like it wasn't even there. The steady flare of pain was pretty good proof that it was, though.

“You’re the one who wants me to fight all the time, but now you’re mad because I did?” she muttered. “How is that fair?”

“I trained you to fight! I didn’t train you to risk your life like an idiot!”

Gwen threw her hands up, then cringed as the movement tugged on her stitches.

“I’m not like you! Trying to save people is what I do! Was I just supposed to leave you to die?”

“Yes!”

That stopped Gwen cold. She swallowed.

“I, what?”

That. That didn’t make any sense. Murdock was a self-serving asshole. But. In what world did him dying serve his own interests? Unless it was just irritation about having to be saved. That, she’d believe.

Murdock took three stomping steps away from her, towards the wall of windows looking out over the city. For a moment she wondered about those windows — what could he sense out of them? Anything? Or did he just have to imagine the city buzzing below? She shook those thoughts off quickly, determined to hold on to her indignation.

“Seriously? You’d rather die than get saved by me? That’s how easily damaged your pride is?”

“You were hurt!” Murdock snapped, whirling around to face her. “You’re my apprentice, Gwendolyn — my charge. And I failed to keep you safe.”

The vicious smile dropped from Gwen’s face. Off to the side, Otomo’s expression was tight and dark in a way that reminded Gwen of her dad — the pain, the guilt in his eyes when she first took off her mask.

That was…

They were worried. They were mad at her because they were worried about her. And she’d just been blowing them off like a jerk. Her neck and ears burned with shame.

“I didn’t…” Gwen sighed, looked away. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t do it again,” Otomo said. “Perhaps this is one lesson you can manage to learn the first time.”

“You—”

“No training for two weeks,” Murdock interrupted. “And you won’t be going out as Spider-Woman either. Otomo, please drive Gwendolyn home and ensure Captain Stacy is made aware of these restrictions.”

And then, like a dismissal, he turned to face the windows again. Gwen watched him as she was herded out the door. He looked powerful towering over the city; imposing, unmovable.

How quickly would he break apart though, she wondered, if she ever told him she’d taken that blow because cared about him too? The door closed between them, and Gwen kept those sentiments tucked behind her tongue.
