J.K. Rowling has stated that one of the reasons James bullied Snape was because he was jealous of Snape’s friendship with Lily and everyone somehow thinks that Snape was unable to handle rejection.

The one thing that will always get to me about Severus Snape, was that he never had a chance to be happy after he’s played his part in the war. He was miserable his entire life, and if anything in the HP series, it’s that he had no chance at redemption

it’s kind of wild to me that snape still lives in his family house, like… there have to be people there who still remember him from when he was a kid and his parents. what does he even tell them? like presumably he has to go outside to get food at some point when he goes back for the summer, right??? so does he ever run into the older nosey neighbor that always seems to exist in that kind of small, insular neighborhood, who asks him all sorts of questions about his job as a professor? does his father’s work mates ever call him up to see how tobias’s kid is getting on? do they all think he has this, like, swank job at a private school in scotland?? they MUST think he teaches like chemistry or something, right? do you think anyone ever asks him if he can tutor so-and-so’s kid when he’s back for the summer?
like i find it difficult to believe that the snape family didn’t have some kind of connections in that neighborhood, even if they were mostly negative. what must it be like for snape to return to that house and that neighborhood every year and deal with his family ghosts?

You know what’s wild? Remembering that children hear things for the first time without context and are literally like, “What?”
I just said “See you later, alligator” to a four-year-old and I think it was the first time they had ever heard that. They froze in their tracks, looked at me completely bewildered then replied, “See you later, chicken” and kept walking.
