On Amity, Toralei, and Repairing Harm
There’s this cool thing in shows recently where characters are allowed to still be kids who mess up, but that doesn’t take away the big harm that they caused others when they were more antagonistic. You can see this with shows like The Owl House and Monster High 2022, with the characters Amity and Toralei.
In the Owl House, Amity was the resident popular girl and bully. She and her old friend group picked on Willow for years. This took an actual toll on Willow’s mental health. When Luz and Amity go inside Willow’s mind, she actively tries to destroy Amity even if that means destroying her own mind.
Amity spoke up and finally admitted that it was never on Willow to be a stronger witch, she already was in her own right, Amity’s parents made her cut ties with Willow. Willow, with this new understanding of what happened, does end on better terms with Amity, but still sets the boundary that she needs time before she can consider Amity a friend, and Amity respects that! And with time and Amity putting in the effort, they do end the series on way better terms and actual friends!
Toralei in the 2022 Monster High series is actually the mother of the Werewolf-ruler at town time, Katarina Stripe, and is part of a very influential family in the monster world. She did have this air that she was better than everyone else. When she finds out Draculaura is doing Witch Craft, she does work to try and get Draculaura expelled. This leaves an impact on Draculaura and makes her very distrustful of Toralei.
When Clawdeen needs the help of Toralei in a later episode, by that point, Toralei is on the path to changing her ways and viewpoint, but Draculaura still doesn’t trust her and rightfully so. Toralei actually apologizes to Draculaura for the incident. By the end of the episode, Toralei, in Draculaura’s words, has earned a “vial-ful” of her trust, but it’s a start. Draculaura does want to start to see Toralei in a different light, but she just needs more time! They end up on friendlier terms by the next season too!
The key takeaways here are that both Amity and Toralei are still teenagers and given reasons as to why they act this way, but Toralei and Amity don’t excuse their actions, and apologize for the harm that they caused the other party. They also don’t get the full friendship of the people they hurt right away. The hurt party needs some time to trust them and see them as friends, and that’s not treated as wrong!
This can be a really important lesson to teach young kids and anyone really. For the hurting party and the party that caused the harm. Even if you really want to forgive someone, the harm can take time to go away and it’s ok if you need time to trust the people who want to make amends. And to the other party, you can work to do better and gain trust, but that can take time and real effort. I hope shows and media in general keep using this route with characters tbh.

I've been doing a lot of thinking about my family and how I was treated as a child, and honestly, my father has never seemed more amazing in my eyes.
I used to love Luigi(Mario's brother) when I was little. Like, he was my favorite character ever, and I had multiple plushies of him. Didn't give a fuck about Mario, vaguely tolerated Peach, but I loved Luigi.
On my first day of kindergarten, my dad gave me the number for his work phone and said it was Luigi's phone number. "If anything happens at school, call Luigi."And not even twenty minutes into my first day, I was having a panic attack. So I went down to the principal's office and called "Luigi."
Now, at the time, my father was in a meeting with his manager and his supervisor, along with most of his coworkers. And when I called, he picked up before he even left the room.
And he put on a very awful Italian accent and said, "Itsa me, Luigi! Whatsa the matter?"In front of his boss and coworkers. Without telling them what was going on. So they were absolutely bewildered, and he carried on like they didn't even exist. He only explained what was happening after I had calmed down and hung up, to which most of them responded with "Aww, cute."
I continued to call him whenever I got upset at school, and eventually his coworkers got in on it. I distinctly remember one of them impersonating Toad. I don't know why I'm telling you this, I just thought it might make you smile :)
this is so delightful I love your Luigi dad

...Please don't let this be the moment where I learn that against all of my preconceptions, most people actually LIKE pornbots
(...Also I'm drawing this as humor, purity culture don't co-opt me, yadda-yadda-yadda. Just ace shower thoughts.)
