it can't have been so long since the arena. since the wet sand and the vine-covered ground that ensnared his steps, and the mud, so much mud, so hard to run in, but without so much as a window to give some sense, peeta is left lost in uncounted days and nights. it could have been so long, but how could that matter? the shouting of joanna, the incoherent ramblings of annie, and the relentless screams of all three of them remained unchanged. peeta, in this room that the screams come from at any hour, swallows hard.

so here they have a fourth victor. peeta recognises her, from a game he can't place, and her as one of the blurred maddened winners of the games. the bloodied handcuffs bites into his wrists as his restless movements begin to cease in an attempt to concentrate while numbers spin through his head. screams. days. games. tributes. districts. dead. dead. dead. i give a similar nod. ' to some more than others. ' not that others from the districts don’t share the same feelings: the sudden grip of fear at the possibility of being thrown into a horror they’re used to witnessing from a just a fingertips distance. but there’s some understanding, more at least, victor to victor, of possibility to reality. the fingertip is a world of difference. painting terror firsthand is simpler, replicating rather than creating. i steady myself with my hand on the back of a chair.
