My heart was broken. It’s always gonna be broken. And I know yours is broken too. But I don’t have to carry… I said things that… I should fuckin’ burn in hell for what I said to you.

I was hoping I could show you how special I am. I honestly believe I’m destined for great things, Mr. James. I’ve got qualities that don’t come shining through right at the outset, but give me a chance and I’ll get the job done. I can guarantee you that.

A new interview with Architectural Digest accompanied by a photo from TIFF 2009 (how similar does he look 7 years later!). A fascinating Q&A! Highlights here, read it all at architecturaldigest.com
Q: Describe your home in five words or less. CM: Victorian, by the sea. Where we are is private, but you can get into town.
Q: Do you prefer old houses to modern ones? CM: I like the energy of an old house. I like that you can modernize the inside but let the bones remain. I think the Victorians got it right in the generosity of the rooms and the windows.
Q: Do you and your wife share the same aesthetic in terms of decor? CM: Every marriage is a collaboration, isn’t it? We have similar tastes. Given that she’s a visual artist, she’s more confident in her choices than I am.
Q: What do you keep on your bedside table? CM: A radio and books. I read exclusively novels—I’m afraid I can’t do biographies or autobiographies. I’m currently reading Samuel Beckett’s novels. I’m a huge fan of his plays, obviously, but I’d never read his novels: Molloy, Malone Dies, and The Unnamable. Beckett is more accessible than people give him credit for; he’s very dry, very funny. You don’t need to have a degree in Greek mythology to understand him.
Q: What was the last music playing in your house? CM: There’s a great band called the Lemon Twigs that everyone should listen to. They’re two brothers, about 17 and 19, and a little Bowie-esque. I think they’re about to be huge. It’s kind of glam-prog, with beautiful melodies, beautiful singing.
Q:Where do you keep your awards? CM: At the moment, they’re all in storage.
Q: What was the best movie prop you’ve gotten to take home? CM: On Anthropoid, actually, I took home one of the beautiful old Persian rugs that was in the apartment set. Maybe it’s Moroccan … Whatever it is, it’s lovely.
Q: When you travel for work, do you mostly stay in hotels? CM: I generally prefer apartments because you can cook for yourself. But as long as it’s clean and there’s hot water and Wi-Fi, I’m happy.
