Dan Richter signing a copy of my and Simone Odino’s book “2001 between Kubrick and Clarke” at the opening gala event for the New York exhibition #Envisioning2001. The book chronicles the making of Kubrick’s sci-fi masterpiece and explores his relationship with author Arthur C. Clarke by making extensive use of never before seen material from the Kubrick Archive and the Clarke Collection. With a foreword by Dan Richter, in which he fondly remembers his time with Stanley and Arthur on the “Dawn of Man” set. #stanleykubrick #kubrick #arthurcclarke #2001aspaceodyssey #filippoulivieri #simoneodino #danielrichter #mybook #selfpublished (presso Museum of the Moving Image) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7ewNFIoBL6/?igshid=3wbv4mcqxhaz

This is quite a find. Stanley Kubrick, aged 18, caught on camera while shooting some pictures for Look magazine, most likely by Alex Singer. Part of the Museum of the City of New York collecion, 1946.

Typical dinner conversation from the future. "What's on TV"? "Judo". Left: Fahrenheit 451 (1966), François Truffaut Right: 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Stanley Kubrick. Trivia: The '2001' scene was shot on early January 1966 at Borehamwood; the 'Fahrenheit 451' scene, planned to be shot almost at the same time, was delayed and eventually shot on early February 1966 at Pinewood.

A new quasi-weekly series: 'You Saw It Here First' (rare or previously unreleased pics from the making of 2001: A Space Odyssey) N°4 A nice picture of Kubrick and Californian actor Kevin Scott, who played Nick Miller of Space Station Security, from the documentary "Trumbull Land", recently broadcasted on TCM. The scenes Scott appeared in 2001 were shot very quickly in mid-January 1966; he had a bit of extra dialogue cut from the final movie, in the voice identification scene, chatting with Dr.Floyd (played by William Sylvester) about how their families were doing.

(Left) In a scene shot in May 1966 that does not appear in movie but curiously ended up in a promotional picture released in 1972, Poole and Bowman probe the supposedly faulty AE-35 unit with what looks like a parabolic shaped tool. In the final version we see the astronauts checking the internal circuits of the unit (a modified gyroscope) with a probe built by Tektronix, a Portland-based firm whose oscilloscopes and related test and measurement equipment were actually used by NASA in the Apollo program. N°2
MGM Borehamwood Studios, Stage 2: In the control center besides the centrifuge set, Stanley Kubrick and some of the crew members listen intently to a reporting technician. From left to right we recognize the director of photography Geoffrey Unsworth, Kubrick, Pamela Carlton (continuity), John Alcott (who started as lighting cameraman and later took on the main job from Unsworth) and Gary Lockwood (who played the doomed astronaut Frank Poole). Alcott is wearing the protective hard hat required because of the exploding light bulbs, falling equipment and miscellaneous loose junk in the unusual revolving set. Shooting in the centrifuge started in mid-february 1966 and lasted until late april.

(English version coming soon!)
