Here is my final RUEL Painkiller animation. It is the same as the one below I have just changed the timing of a couple frames to ensure it is easily readable. I am really happy with the lighting in this video, it is consistent and looks a lot better than the other animation videos I did before this one. My favourite frame of this animation is ‘Driving on the road, waiting for head on collision’, because of the pill rolling through the frame, I think it's a really cool transition. Overall I’m happy with this as my final animation, comparing it to the first animation I think the overall look and quality has improved a lot.

Here is my fourth and possibly final animation for RUEL, I am happy with how this one turned out I think the dark purple paper really worked well with the fake LED lights I had to use.

Shoot number four;

Here are some process photos for my forth shoot. The far right image is my setup for when I start taking the images.

I tried to shoot again on a canon camera with a different lens but it was too hard to shoot because I couldn't see the preview and didn't know how to get it to the settings I needed. Instead I just shot this animation on my phone.

This is the camera I tired to use but as you can see it has a big lens on it that's mainly meant for far away shots to zoom in etc. so it didn't work the best for what I was needing it for. To the right is my setup for this shoot, I used the same setup as it worked well before and I made sure to tap down the paper I was using so it did not move and therefore change the shot.

RUEL; Painkiller - Third Animation 

Above is my third attempt at a stop animation promotion video for RUEL. I really liked the transitions throughout the different lyrics and think I can replicate this again even better. I also prefer the cut out letters over using different material such as paint. I did intend on shooting this with a 1100D canon camera but the lens was to heaving when I set up the shot it was hard to correct this so I just used my phone. Again I had problems with the auto lighting on my phone and I did lock that but it didn't seem to work as I thought. 

I want to try it again and add more to the background for example, maybe cut out some shapes or possibly use pills (inspiration from the music video). I also want to use natural lighting next time because I have used a LED light and it whitens out the light peach coloured paper I used.

I’ve taken inspiration from the album covers for this song. I liked the typeface from the right hand side album cover, and from the left hand side I really like the colourful theme, the peachy tones plus the coloured candy RUEL is sitting on.

Colour Palette

I chose to use light wash of peach as my main colour for this animation, I don't want to use to many colours otherwise I am worried it will look to cartoony or childish. The second animation I put together I used paints for my materials and it did turn out quite childish when I re watch it. Comparing it too my first animation where I use different medias to express the lyrics which I do think is presented better.

This was my second go with stop animation, I only used paints this time instead of mixing different mediums. I also used the same setup as the first time round which worked well but I would like to possibly use a professional camera because the lighting does change slightly throughout the whole animation. I used bluetooth headphones to take the images rather than pressing the phone every time I needed to take an image which worked well. Throughout the animatic I've used the same colour scheme which is a warm colour palette.

This was my set up for the stop animation video below. I used a clothing rack, an led lamp as well as a tripod to stop my phone falling, next time I do this id like to stabilise my phone better because I did bump it a few times. Id also like to not do the animation on a notepad next time I'll use a blank piece of paper, I think this will make it easier to crop when in photoshop.

This was my first proper go with stop animation, and using a full step up. It took around 5-7 hours to shoot the video and edit it. 

Things I’d like to improve on for next time:

- ensure the lighting is consistent throughout all the images

- use a plain piece of paper next time without the notepad

- play with clay, and different coloured lighting next time

- ensure my phone is stable, I had a few problems with it moving, also attached ear phones to it so I can take the images with the click of a button

Research:

Ive done research into the meaning behind ‘Painkiller’ and what RUEL is trying to communicate to his audience through the song. When Ruel sings ‘Painkiller; he is referring to the women in his life, and she is helping him overcome the ‘anguish’ which defines his everyday life. For example “your my painkiller when my brain gets bitter”!

Research:

These are screenshots from RUEL’s instagram. Over the lockdown period him and his team created RUELVISION.TV, a platform for his fans to get more exclusive content about RUEL. Overall I love the colour palette again of these magazine spreads, I am really inspired by the type used throughout the spread as well. The theme of the spread is definitely retro vibes, like an old brochure you would get of new products coming into the stores!

Research:

These are a couple of front cover art works that I was inspired by I really like the retro feel and was also really attracted to the use of colour. Really warm tones, oranges, pinks and yellows. 

This is a similar colour palette to what id like to achieve.

Above I’ve linked a video about the history of type as an animation video, I found this very interesting to watch and after trying a few myself I realised how hard and time consuming it is to do the simple things like this. I’d personally like to try and do something up to this standard. This video inspired me.

Another stop animation video I created, ‘thunder bolts and lightning’ is the lyric from Queen. I like doing multiple videos to get the hang of the software and putting together of the animation.
