Jason had never been drunk. As an angel he was not capable of something like that.

Not that he wanted to.

But he had a feeling that was how you felt when you did. Dizzy. Dizzy and stupid.

But Jason wasn't drunk. He was in love.

And it was stupid, stupid, stupid. Because who he was in love with was a demon named Nico. His love was impossible.

Impossible and stupid.

Nico was the son of a millionaire in Miami. A teenager who had held a party for his eighteenth birthday.

It had been fun but during the party he had been robbed. What had been stolen didn't matter to Nico while they caught the thief.

Actually Nico wasn't so interested in the robbery but in the handsome with sunglasses inspector. He was serious but compassionate in his work. He smiled at him and said firmly that he would catch the thief.

Nico couldn't help but smile at Detective Grace.

Music calms the beast. And it attracts unicorns. Still, your intentions have to be pure if you want to see this fantastic being. It was considered a sign of good luck and purity of the relationship if a unicorn appeared during the wedding. There were registered cases and the relationship had always been fruitful and long-lived. But in all cases at least one person in the couple had been a virgin woman, for which unicorns had great affinity.

So it was a huge surprise when a unicorn had appeared at Jason and Nico's wedding. Still that didn't make it any less perfect.

Angels are born on nights of starfall.

One night of starfall Nico di Angelo was born. A pure but hurt soul. A soul that had become a pirate. Strong but gentle. Vicious but fair.

Jason loved him. Jason, god of storms, had fallen in love with him one stormy night when he had been so angry with humans that his rage had spread through the seven seas.

But Nico, sweet, gentle, strong, Nico had survived the storm hitting his ship. But he hardly does it because he was more concerned about his crew than himself.

There Jason had fallen in love. And Jason would wait. He would wait for the perfect moment to meet him. Meanwhile the storms would harm Nico's enemies.

But his love of pirate stories didn't stop him blushing when he saw Jason dressed up as Cowboy for losing a stupid bet to Percy.

Nico loved pirates but...maybe it was time to open up to a new genre of reading...

Writing Deaf Characters | Speech is Speech

Before I get going, I’m 75% deaf, as some of you know, semi-reliant on hearing aids and lip reading. My first languages were Makaton sign and then BSL. I now use spoken English.

There are a lot of issues I find with how deaf people are represented in books, when represented at all. I would love to see more deaf and hard of hearing characters in the books I read- without having to read books specifically about deaf/HoH people- but when I find them, they’re grossly undercharacterized or stereotyped. Authors write them in a way that sets signing language characters apart from speaking characters as if they are inferior, and this makes my blood boil.

Some technicalties

I’ll keep this brief.

You may have heard that “deaf” is a slur and you should use “hearing impaired”. Don’t. I’ve never met a deaf or hard of hearing person who believed that. Use deaf for people who are deaf, and Hard of Hearing (HoH) for people who lack hearing. These can be interchangeable depending on the person. This is why sensitivity readers are a useful part of the beta process.

Sign language is incredibly varied. It developes in the same way as spoken language. Fun fact: in BSL there are at least half a dozen ways to say bullshit, my favourite of which is laying your arms across one another with one hand making a bull’s head sign and the other hand going flat, like a cowpat. It’s beautifully crude, and the face makes the exclamation mark. Wonderful.

There are different sign languages. Knowing more than one would make a character multi or bi-lingual, even if they are non-speaking.

Makaton is basic sign language used by children, and it mirrors the very simple language used by toddlers.

Yes, we swear and talk shit about people around us in sign language sometimes, and no, it isn’t disrespectful to have signing characters do this. Just remember that we also say nice things, and random things, and talk about fandoms and TV shows and what we’re having for dinner, too.

Each signed language is different from another. ASL and BSL? Nothing alike. Just google the two different signs for horse.

Remember that sign language is a language, equal to the spoken word

Therefore, treat it as such. Use quotation speech marks and dialogue tags. You only need to explicitly state that this character uses signed language once, and then let your modifiers and description do the rest.  It isn’t a form of “sub-speech" or “making hand actions”- sign language is a language all on its own: it has its own grammar rules, syntactical structures, punctuation, patterns, idioms and colloquialisms. For example, “what is your name?” becomes “Your name what?” with the facial expression forming punctuation in the same way that spoken English uses alterations of prosodic tone (inflections). There is even pidgin sign; a language phenomenon usually associated with spoken language.

In the same way that you would describe a spoken-English character’s tone of voice, you would describe a signed-English speaker’s facial expressions and the way that they sign- keeping in mind that these things are our language’s equivalent of verbal inflection.

So please, none of that use of “special speech marks” or italicised speech for sign. If your viewpoint character doesn’t understand signed speech, then you take the same approach that would be used for any other language they don’t understand, like French or Thai. E.g “He said something in rapid sign language, face wrinkling in obvious disgust.” is a good way of conveying this. The proof that you’ve done this well is in whether or not you can switch “sign language” for French or something else, and it would read the same.

Don’t be afraid to describe how things are said, either. Sign language is such a beautiful and expressive way of talking, and to see a writer do it justice would be truly fabulous. Putting this into practise:

“Oh, I love maths!” She said, fingers sharp and wide with sarcasm. She raised her eyebrows.

“I’m sorry.” He replied and made his face small, but could not keep the grin forming. She was starting to laugh, too.

hey yall. i just realized something.

this is probably gonna be long but whatever. stick with me.

soooo im currently rereading the original pjo series. and i am feeling. so many. things. i realized a lot of things too.

okayyy so in PJO, we view percy as reckless. stupid. always acting on impulse. basically that dumb guy that never thinks befire doing things. BUT in HOO, we start viewing him as mature and smart and strategic and all that. But he didnt grow THAT much. Percy didnt age that much in hoo.

Remember that iconic scene (Mark of Athena, i think?) where they meet some kind of monster/bad ppl (im too lazy to search it up) aboard the argo II and it was percy that thought of saying that Dionysus was with them? Percy knew about their fear of dionysus, and how he turned them inti dolphins. So he got some diet coke as “proof” that he was there and asked frank to turn into a dolphin. Genius, right?

Annabeth called him smart after that.

That was the only time we considered him smart. (Well not ONLY, just one of the few times.) But guess what? He’s been doing smart shit like that for years already.

I cant really mention all of the times he did something smart/wise. If i did it would take me days before i finish typing.

So i realized why we only thought he was smart in hoo but not in pjo.

In PJO, it was in first person, so we saw everything through the eyes of percy. In this series, he only focused about how stupid he was, about how great other people were and how better they are then him. But he doesnt focus about all the good/smart/wise things he’s done. Percy doesnt know that he’s smart. All he knows is that he is stupid, worthless, and all other negative things.

in HOO, however, we were reading from another person’s point of view. We saw percy from another person’s eyes. We noticed things that he doesnt notice himself.

Hazel called him a god, once, because he was just THAT attractive. Everyone else looked up to him, and thinks he’s the most powerful/strongest person to exist.

But Percy doesnt know that. All he knows is that he’s stupid.

SOOOO, long story short, Percy hates himself.

Hi ♡♡♡ Loved your last post about s/o in the hospital. Can you do the thing with Rin, Yukio, Bon and maybe Shima about male s/o who happens to have a poor health but wants to become exorcist regardless?

First off; they'd all be extremely worried as well as concerned for their s/o's well being.

Rin would feel the need to protect his s/o, always putting himself in front of them whenever there's danger. He cares deeply for them and would prefer they put their dream of becoming an exorcist aside until they are healthy. But at the same time he can relate to that dream of becoming an exorcist and making the world a safer place, so he'd stick by their side and make sure they're careful and don't push themselves over their limit. After all, he just wants to see his s/o happy.

Yukio wouldn't try to stop them. He understands that if it's something his s/o is passionate about there's no use in convincing them to quit. Instead he'd decide to train them himself so that they can train at a slower pace and he can keep an eye on them to make sure they're not over working themselves. If they do happen to push themselves too hard he may lose him temper but it's only because he cares and doesn't want them getting hurt.

I think Ryuji would be the most stubborn when it comes to keeping his s/o from being an exorcist. He thinks that because of their poor health they're weak and it's too risky for them to be an exorcist. It would take his s/o quite a while to convince him they're just as capable and strong willed to become an exorcist as anyone else is, but eventually he'd come around. He'd still have his doubts if ever their health lead them to be bed ridden, but he'd always stick by their side.

Shima is super proud of his s/o for deciding to become an exorcist despite their poor health. He views them and brave and pretty badass. But that doesn't mean he's not worried because he is, he just wants to remain his "cool self" so he doesn't show it much. But every so often when him and his s/o are alone he'll voice him concern and say how he really cares about them and just wants them to be safe.
